PARENTS MUST CONTACT MRS JEANETTE EMERY IF THEY WISH TO WITHDRAW STUDENTS FROM NAPLAN 2016 BEFORE 18/3/16

One of the focus areas for 2016 is our Site Improvement Plan. We aim to form strong links with families to create a partnership which builds learner capacity. Our Acquaintance nights, R-12, were a great start to this partnership. I hope you found them engaging and rewarding and I encourage you to become involved in your child’s education in small ways as they make a big difference.

As I sit writing this, I can’t believe that four weeks of learning has occurred. It amazes me how engaged our students are and how quickly they take up new concepts and challenges. Our reception class can show me their Jolly Phonics actions and sounds. The Year one class have amazing ways of learning English concepts and are wonderful singers. The Year 2 class were learning fractions when I last visited. The Year 3 class invited me to visit and even gave me a banana! The Year 4 class has been learning about 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. The Year 5 class has some great learning spaces around their rooms and they have been doing learning about polygons. The year 6 students have a fantastic warm up dance for sports practice and they are much better at it than me. The Year 7’s hosted the Year 7’s from Robe this week in their Science lessons. While the Robe primary students have swimming it is a fantastic opportunity to do some curriculum work together. Mr Coote has been assisting Mrs Petersen with some science planning and his expertise in this area has been invaluable. New Year 8 students don’t seem that new as they have slotted easily into Kingston Community School and are excited about new opportunities, new friends and new subjects. The Year 9 students are enjoying being further up the pecking order. The Year 10-12 students have knuckled down and are working productively.

The whole school is looking forward to sports day on Friday. If you have some time to volunteer, your assistance would be appreciated.

Included in the newsletter is a nomination form for Governing Council and various sub committees of the council. If you are interested but unsure of the commitment please give me a call and I can explain what is involved. It would be great to see some of our new families become involved, please don’t be shy.

I invite all families to attend the AGM of the School on Monday March 7 at 7:30pm in the Library classroom.

Best Wishes,Lucretia Tocaciu.

How do students get the most out of their learning?

A lot comes down to what they think of themselves as a learner. A focus across Reception - Year 12 at Kingston Community School this year is the idea of ‘growth mindset’: the idea that ALL students can improve in ALL subjects with a positive attitude and effort.

We value parents assisting in classes

Do you want to play HOCKEY? Hockey is a great family game, it’s fun and healthy and a great way to meet new people. Hockey is a great team game and it’s for people who want to be active and improve their fitness. The Kingston/

Lucindale ‘Rangers’ Hockey club need more players, Our teams consist of under 13's, under 16's, mens and womens – the junior teams are mixed (boys and girls). We even have a younger age group which does hooked in 2 hockey for basic skills. If you feel like you’d like to give hockey a go, then please contact Wendy Hill on 0419825113. Our team is only too happy to teach you some hockey skills.

PARENT VOLUNTEERSMany of our parents and guardians help at school to support their child’s learning. To make it easier for parents and guardians to volunteer their time, the Department for Education and Child Development has updated its relevant history screening policy and procedures.

As a result, parents and guardians who volunteer to directly support their child will no longer require a relevant history screening. However a screening is still necessary for parents and guardians who are volunteering at school camps and sleep overs, as well as those hosting billets or exchange students.

Screenings are just one measure used to help keep children safe. Everyone who works with children plays a part in child protection, including watching out for inappropriate behaviour.

At this stage all classroom volunteers at Kingston Community School are still required to complete a Responding to Abuse and neglect Course, and an induction programme.

If you have any questions about screening or these changes, please speak with Jeanette Emery.

SPORTS DAY BBQ 4th MARCHWe are in need of volunteers for the BBQ.

If you (student/parent/grandparent) could spare an hour or even half an hour between events it would be very much appreciated. We need cooks and servers so please grab a mate and send me a message, everything else is organised.

I realize that we will not know event times until closer so we can work around this.

Please text Catherine Wright on 0418848030 or email [email protected] if you can help.

Egg & Bacon Rolls will be available from 8.30am for $5.00.

Thank youGoverning Council Committee

Acquaintance NightThank you to those parents who were able to join us at the R-9 and 10-12 acquaintance nights. To help us improve for future nights we would really appreciate some feedback.

We understand that it is often impossible to get to functions because of personal circumstances, but we need our parent body to have a voice and to have strong lines of communication with the school. We would really appreciate feedback from parents who attended as well as those who were unable to attend.

We ask you to take a minute to reflect on any feedback that would make this night more relevent for you and your children.
