TheHavurah Project
at Temple Beth-El
SpotlightAs a way to get to know all the newly-formed Havurah groups, we will be peiodically sharing one or two "bios" submitted by each group. Enjoy.
Grateful Dalet The Grateful Dalet Havurah had its first Shabbos dinner at the home of Joan and Neal Menkes on November 11. We lit the candles, said the prayers and blessings and during dinner shared our backgrounds, pro-fessions, interests and community activities. Universally we agreed that the Grateful Daled was Grateful to the Temple for bringing us together for new friendships and strengthening existing friendships. Two couples found they lived around the corner from each other! “It’s a great idea to make new friends in the Congregation,” said Neal Menkes, head of the Temple Ritual Committee. Ben Lewis, Presi-dent of Temple Beth-El, added “We envisioned the project as another extension of the temple community occurring around the Shabbos table. I am personally delighted.” “There are almost 200 members of the Congregation in the pro-gram,” said Neal who lobbies for non-profit organizations. Our hostess Joan Menkes teaches Chemistry at Monacan High School and formerly was a lab worker at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Laura Lewis recently completed an 18 month position as the Inter-im Development Officer at the Maggie Walker Governor’s School Foun-dation. At TBE, she is former chair of the Religious School Committee and former interim chair of the Personnel Committee, on which she still serves. Ben Lewis is involved in technology sales and consulting for state and local government agencies. In addition to his role as pres-ident of TBE, he is also involved with the University of Virginia Jefferson Scholar Program which provides scholarships for out-standing students. Roberta Elford is the “point guard” for the Grateful Dalet. She is the “go to” person. Howard Elford is a biochemist at MCV researching drugs to cure Cancer and Sickle Cell Anemia. Rober-ta assists him with his work. Bob Flax practices general bankruptcy at his law firm. His wife, Marilyn Lipsitz-Flax, who is a retired school teacher, has her desk across from his. Both enjoy socializing and also belong to Beth Ahabah’s Havurah, where they are also members. They love the symphony and the opera. Debbie Friedman is a native Richmonder and Elliot is from New Jersey. They met at Temple Beth-El. She is retired from Bank of America and is now a full-time volunteer. Elliot is a Program Manager for Cognizant,a systems consulting firm. Debbie has served as president of Richmond Hadassah chapter and of South-ern Seaboard Region and currently serves a National Hadassah’s Annual Giving Chair. She is also a volunteer for the JCC, serving on the Patron of the Arts and Book Fair Committees and serves on the Greater Richmond Association for Volunteer Administration (GRAVA).
Debbie is a highly acclaimed singer, and in past years she was a member of Beth-El’s choir during the High Holy Days. Debbie and Elliot are excited about participating in the Havurah and look forward to new friendships. Carole Stevens arrived in Richmond 10 years ago from her native California. She has been the Publicity Chair for Hadassah for several years. She is also a volunteer for Jewish Family Services and is a member of Sisterhood. Carole is a journalist and has worked as an Editorial Assistant and writer for Los Angeles Magazine and has been a Contributing Editor for many national magazines. She wrote the book that goes with “Scared Straight,” a documentary film that won an Academy Award and six Em-mys. She has chaired the California State Commission for the Santa Mon-ica Mountains Conservancy and the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission and the LA County Small Craft Harbor Commission. She has been a member of the Los Angeles Jewish Community Relations Commit-tee, the UCLA Governmental Affairs Committee, the National Women’s Political Caucus and President of the Federation of Hillside and Canyon Association. She is the recipient of UCLA’s Alumni award for Outstanding Community Service.

Special Guest at Beth-El Monday, dec. 5 | 7:30 pm Grove Ave. Kiddush RoomDisagreement and Coexistence: What Hillel and Shammai Can Teach Us about Communitypresented by Rabbi Arie Hasit In a world that seems increasingly polarized, how do we disagree with each other? Can we live together while celebrating the real ideological disputes between us? Come join Rabbi Arie Hasit, the founding rabbi of the new Maso-rti comminity in the town of Mazkeret Batya, Israel, to learn about how Hillel and Shammai, two of the greatest scholars of the Jewish people, learned to live
together without compromising their own values. Rabbi Hasit will also share the challenges of creating a dynamic com-munity in Israel -- one that celebrates pluralism -- while sharing some of the delicacies that make his new home such a delicious place to live. Rabbi Arie Hasit, a graduate of the Schechter Rabbinical Seminary in Jerusalem, is the founding rabbi of a new Masorti community in Mazkeret Batya, as well as the educational coordinator for Rav Siach, a program designed to help connect Israeli and Diaspora Jews. Prior to his role in Mazkeret Batya, Rabbi Hasit worked as the rabbinic intern at Maso-rti congregations in Jerusalem, Kfar Vradim, and Tel Aviv and for three years as the acting rabbi of NOAM- USY's sister movement in Israel. Rabbi Hasit grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ and has a BA from Harvard University, where he focused on studying the expression of identity in Israeli hip hop. He made aliyah in 2005 and has been in Israel since.
December 2016 Communique
Just a quick update for this month… We have launched the One Community, One Campus focus groups. Eighty-nine individuals expressed an interest. Married couples were asked to choose one spouse to participate. With that caveat, we were able to issue invitations to all who expressed inter-est to participate. The first session took place November 14th and three other focus groups are scheduled for December. Information gained from these groups will be summarized and used to inform a survey which will be widely disseminated.
We look forward to sharing the information gleaned as we strive toward a spiritual community space that will enable us to realize our vision and we’re excited to take these initial steps!

Building Community Understanding through Education On November
9th and 10th I had the opportunity to be a guest speaker at Thomas Dale High School in Chesterfield. My presentation was part of a program designed by 9th Grade Honors Social Studies teacher, Nathaniel Bell, to bring more understanding about world religions to his students. He envisioned a community outreach program to bring religious scholars of four major religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism to his students. I was honored to be asked to represent Judaism. "Having someone who is of the faith we are learning about who is also knowledgeable in that field is invaluable for my students. Opening their eyes by connecting what we have learned to someone who lives it and has studied it cannot be replicated in any way. " Mr. Bell stated as for why he worked for almost a year to get this program approved. Most of the students had not met a
person of Jewish faith, and they were very interested in the history of Judaism and its influence on later world religions as well as contempo-rary American Jewish practice. The students were especially intrigued with the hands-on "show and tell" of Judaic objects that I brought to the school. One student comment-ed after my visits, "I like that she [Mrs. Brand] brought in things to look at. If she just told us about the Torah that would have been okay but she had one to see. That was awesome." Mr. Bell was very happy with the out-come of the program. "My students were excited about what we had done and asked to make sure we would have more speakers in the future. I asked my students what their favorite parts about the presentation were, here are a few answers: "Learning that Abraham and Isaac is a story that tells people that human sacrifice was not an ap-
propriate thing for ancient Jewish practice was really cool. I told my mom about it and we read it again that night. " Said Mr. Bell, "My favorite three-word response was, "It was lit." I was thrilled to be part of this pro-gram and hope to continue working with Thomas Dale High School.

Why I support the Temple Beth-El Legacy Program Over 3,000 years ago Hillel wrote “If not now-when?” and “If not me - who?” Almost 1500 years ago Rabbi Tarfon taught us that “It is our task to start the program even if others have to complete it.” Philanthropic giving has always been important to my family. In 1952, when my mother Hortense B. Wolf was struggling to support her family -- an incapacitated husband and 2 young children-- her deceased aunt left her a $5,000 inheritance. So what did mother do with the money? She set up a charitable fund with Richmond Jewish Federation. Today that fund annually makes a sizable contribution to the Richmond Jewish Welfare fund. So I know first-hand the importance of investing today for the needs of tomorrow. I was fortunate enough to have been born into the Temple Beth-El family in 1938 and I want to ensure the financial vitality of our beloved Beth-El for long into the future. Unfortunately for Beth-El, my three children live out of state and have interests of their own. By giving to the Temple Beth-El Life and Legacy Program, I feel comfortable in knowing that I have done my part in pro-viding for the future viability of Temple Beth-El.

THANK YOUDear Ben, Rabbi Knopf, and the Board of Temple Beth-El, I wanted to thank Rabbi Knopf and Hazzan Turk for supporting us through our family’s recent loss of my mother, Gladys Nusenko. Rabbi Knopf was a comforting presence to my mother and to us, visiting her at Beth Shalom Gardens and speaking eloquently about her at her service. Hazzan Turk was also comforting to us, and we greatly appreciated her participation. Linda Price did an excellent job leading minyan for us, and we were appreciative of her presence. My mother was a member of Temple Beth-El since 1994, and she always loved the synagogue, as well as Rabbi Creditor.
