In that twilight period between the setting of the 1970s and the dawning of the 1980s, there was a brief time when hard rock and heavy metal world come together as one. And from this union came forth the likes of bands such as Yesterday & Today, Riot, TKO and The Rods to name but a few. This groups would be some of the first of what would become known a U.S. Heavy Metal and rival that happening overseas with the NWOBHM. And similar to the movement in Europe, many of these new hard rock/heavy metal bands would pop up across America, most of which like their European peers would fade out quickly and be lost to time only to be discovered years later….Such is the case with DESIRE. DESIRE was formed in late 1980-1981 by guitarist Burk Skyhorse Price, drummer Larry Sexton, & manager Bob Theissen. The band operated out of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, and was one of the first local acts to establish a following playing primarily original material. The band was known for its over-the-top live performances that featured full arena-style lights and sound, even in smaller venues. DESIRE released one album, ‘Cry At The Sky’, which was recorded at Counterpart Creative Studios in the spring and summer of 1983. There were two versions of this album. The first, called ‘Screamer On The Rocks’, only made it to test pressing because of a last-minute personnel change. ‘Cry At The Sky’, featuring a different vocalist, made it to the pressing plant, and was released in the fall of 1983. It received airplay on the major FM rock station in Cincinnati and the band received high praise in the press for both their music and live shows. Recorded in the March of that year at Fairview in Hull – one of the principal studios in the history of the NWOBHM – the catchy A-side and its more frenetic flip demonstrated that the band were both talented songwriters and proficient players; an album was given the green light, but then line-up changes threw a spanner in the works. The band that re-appeared at Fairview the following year was remarkably different to the one that had put the single to tape. Gone were vocalist Darryl Cheswick, guitarist Jeff Birkby, bassist Tony Hynd and drummer Paul Gilbert, and with just guitarist and songwriter Steve Johnson remaining from the original line-up the band was completed by Steve Barratt (guitar), Paul ‘Frasker’ Johnson (bass) and Peter Halliday on drums, with vocals shared between the Johnson brothers and Barratt. The result was an album that was as diverse and deep as the NWOBHM itself, with melodic material like the Thin Lizzy-esque ‘Endless Flight’ rubbing shoulders with the rampaging ‘Attack Attack’. The oddly-named instrumental ‘Rudy And The Zips’ gave the band the opportunity to let loose, and a re-recording of ‘Strange Place To Be’ brought the album’s running order up to ten. Unfortunately, before long their record label was in financial difficulty, and by the end of 1983 both Rondelet and Heritage had been consigned to the history books. This release features the band’s entire vinyl catalogue, combining the album with their sole single, and is a true celebration of a band at the height of their form. Soon enough the new born Blitzkrieg inked a deal with David Wood’s Neat Records label. The band’s legendary »Buried Alive« single (with “Blitzkrieg” on the B-Side) was recorded at Impulse Studios (produced by Mick Sweeney) in February 1981 and issued as NEAT 10 on May 19th the same year. Due to Brian Ross joining Satan, the original incarnation of Blitzkrieg split up in late 1981 without having recorded an album. When »A Time Of Changes« was finally released posthumously in 1985 it was too little too late. Time had moved on, and American acts like Exodus, Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer were dominating the international metal scene. However, the year 1991 saw Blitzkrieg reforming with a line-up of Brian Ross (vocals), Glenn S. Howes (guitar), Tony J. Liddle (guitar), Glen Carey (bass) and Gary Young (drums). They went into the local Impulse Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne to re-record the two tracks off Blitzkrieg’s debut single “Blitzkrieg” and “Buried Alive” (with Keith Nichol producing). In addition to that, three brand new songs were put down on tape, “Night Howl”, “The Sentinel” and “Nocturnal Vision”.
