Kite Fest Success!
May 31st turned into the per-
fect day for the 2nd Fannin
Kite Fest. Roughly 300 hun-
dred people attended and
everyone, ages 5-80, partici-
pated. Big Mike’s Kites was
the kite vendor present, but
many people also brought
their own kites. The event
had the Chill Out shaved ice
vendor for a tasty cool off.
Three members from the
DAKO (Dallas Area Kitefliers
Organization) came out and
displayed approximately 20
spectacular specialty kites for
participants to
enjoy.
Yet again we
had a great re-
sponse to the
essay/drawing
contest for all
Fannin County
students. Over $1100 were
awarded as prizes to the win-
ners and honorable mentions.
We were happy to give all the
donations provided by our
sponsors directly back to the
essay/contest participants.
We appreciate our sponsors

Kites
By Monte Wallace
4th Grade
1st Place Winner in Grades 4-6 Essay contest - $100 Kite Certificate
So you like kites? I do. There are many reasons why I love them. One, they can teach
you. The second reason is they are challenging. Kites can be very fun to fly.
One reason why I love kites is that you have to use your brain to fly one. You can’t just
stick it up there and expect it to fly, you have to think about your surroundings of power lines
and where your kite is. You have to use your brain to think about where to fly it and where
not to fly it.
Another reason why I love kites is they can teach you a lesson in life if you spend time
with it. Flying a kite can teach your patience by showing you that that the first time you do
something it is not always going to work out the way you want it to. I flew a kite once, but it
never got off the ground and I kept trying, and then it went up in the air. That day I was taught
patience.
Flying a kite is my favorite activity because it can teach you a lesson in life. They are al-
so challenging to your brain. I think all kids should love to fly a kite.

“Wow, look, you can see all the people from up here” I said as I gazed down from
my flight to look at all the people, while flying next to my fellow kites.
“I wish Janet and James would take us down soon, the weather seems to be
getting bad” Jack said filled with worry.
“Yeah, I think I can see some lightening in the distance.”
Suddenly, I felt my wings dampen, wait now I’m drenched! It’s storming!
“Jack! Stay calm, if you move to much your string will break” I screamed while
trying to be heard over the storm. I could feel myself going lower and lower to the
ground but Jack was only going higher. I started to panic. He was all I had left, I couldn’t
lose him.
“SNAP”
“On, no! JAAAAAACK, COME BACK” I screamed.
I could see him being torn in half, it was a real life horror movie. Wait, no, what
are they doing, we can’t leave Jack! How will I ever be at peace not knowing what hap-
pened?
I waited anxiously all night, waiting to see if jack would come home, the storm
had passed and I’m starting to think Jack did too.
The door creaked open. In came Janet and Jack! He had been fixed too. I whis-
pered, “I love you, I’ll never let you go”.

Kites and Their History
By Nick Hubenthal
1st Place Grades 9-12 Essay contest - $100 Kite Certificate
Throughout history, the little darling children of the green earth have
enjoyed the spoiled pleasures of running around and annoying the neigh-
bors. Now, with the help of mass marketing and manufacturing, you can
arm your little tyke with something that resembles a deformed bird caught
on a wire. However, these are not just any flying pieces of cloth, kites have
been a notorious fair of backyard and park entertainment for years.
Kites were first used for military purposes during the Mongolian inva-
sion of the known world. They were used as a massaging system between
commanders in order to stealthy convey a hidden message between one an-
other. However, later on kites were used for telling weather conditions. For
example, when Benjamin Franklin held his key experiment in a lightning
storm, he used a weather kite to track the storm’s conditions in order to fine
the ideal place for a lightning strike. He also used it as a way of testing con-
ductivity without electrocuting himself.
