    As a continuation of our Community Mapping Series, Kits House willwork with local newcomer families, seniors, youth and service organiza-

    tions to identify community needs, strengths and resources for newcom-ers on the Westside of Vancouver. Workshop and dialogue sessionswill use the Finding Home model developed by Jessie Sutherland ofWorldview Strategies (www.worldviewstrategies.com) on such topics as:What creates a sense of home? What community resources are needed& used? Why does belonging matter? What are the unique needs ofcultural groups/newcomers to the Westside?

    West Side Pocket MarketsOnsite- 2305 W. 7th Ave

    Kits House and the South Granville Seniors Centre will host pocketmarkets from the end of June through mid-September this year.These small, temporary markets will help to bring fresh produce closerto where people live, and in particular seniors who may have trouble

    accessing nutritious food. The fruits and vegetables will be purchasedfrom west side farmers, but the markets themselves will be run by KitsHouse staff and volunteer members of the Westside Food SecurityCollaborative.

    CSA - Community Supported AgricultureOnsite- 2325 W. 7th Ave

    This year Kits House is partnering with Kitsilano Farms to be a pickuplocation for their CSA. The farm operation grows for a set number of har-vest shareholders who subscribe at the beginning of the year. Then theshareholders share in the bounty of the harvest throughout the growingseason, assuming that mother nature is on our side. In return, everyonegets to share the fruits of an abundant and diverse harvest throughoutthe season.

    This mini urban market will be every Thursday evening from 5:30-7:30.

    Community PreschoolOffsite- Jericho Military Base at 4th and Highbury

    We offer a child-centred curriculum that is play-based with focusedquestions and activities. The program supports children in their emo-tional, social, creative, cognitive and physical development. The teach-ers focus is to support the child in being self condent, expressive and

    co-operative to build the foundation for cognitive learning. We haveten centres that offer opportunities for children to interact with others:blocks and building, art, music, story theatre, literacy, math, science,dramatic play and sensory and physical development. The children gooutside everyday, and participate in 2-3 eld trips per year.

    Morning Session:Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:30am-12:00pm

    Afternoon Session:Monday, Wednesday & Friday 1:30pm-4:00pm

    Cost:$190.00/month + $50.00 registration fee + $10.00 annual membership.

    Kitsilano Kids Club Summer Day CampsOnsite- 2305 W. 7th Ave

    Ages 6-8 & 9-12 year

    Junior Leadership Camp Program: This program is specically de-signed for children 8 to 12 years old, to a maximum of 10 participantsper week. These children will engage in specially designed leadership

    activities, and will assist the staff with the Little Campers program byacting as role models, helping with activities, and creating a buddysystem.

    Little Campers Program: This program is for the 5 to 7 year old chil-dren, to a maximum of 20 participants. The Little Campers will partici-pate in a number of exciting summer activities, and will join with theLeadership Camp participants for weekly themes and age appropriateactivities.

    Strengthening ConnectionsOffsite at 2707 Tennis Crescent, UBC Campus

    Kits House Family Resource Programs work in partnership with ourlocal community to provide opportunities, strengthen connections, andbuild a more welcoming and inclusive community.

    Strengthening Connections is a project that provides supports for new-comer families on the Westside. Through our Peer Support Program,parent and caregiver volunteers provide 1st language assistance andwelcome newcomer families to their new home. Training is provided oncross-cultural communication, diversity, peer support, and leadership.Our existing Peer Support Volunteers speak: Mandarin, Spanish, Farsiand Arabic.

    *We are recruiting Peer Support Volunteers for our next training ses-

    Caregivers Drop-in: Westcoast Child CareResource Centre

    A monthly drop-in program geared towards caregivers and children 0-5years. Join the program to meet other local caregivers, make friends,

    and receive support from knowledgeable staff and peers. Parents withchildren 0-5 years are also welcome to attend.

    Westside Seniors Links Program

    Are you a senior who wants some help around the house? The West-side Seniors Links Program provides you with a small list of studentsto interview. You hire whomever you choose and pay the student $10/hour directly. There is a 2 hour minimum. Students can help with anumber of tasks including light housework, odd jobs and gardening.

    Westside Seniors Peer Counselling Program

    This program offers condential no-cost peer counseling and support

    services to older adults. Peer counselling volunteers offer listening

    support to seniors who are feeling lost, depressed, or lonely due to:relocation or a new living situation, separation from family members,bereavement, health and aging concerns or anxiety.

    In partnership with BC Housing, the Resource Centre offers support,recreational activities and resources to Steeves Manor tenants withsome programs open to the local community.

    Resource Centre Hours: Monday to Friday 9:30am to 4pm

    Ongoing Core Programs:

    Community Kitchen:

    The last Tuesday of every second month, a group of tenants get to-gether to cook multicultural meals, learn new skills, and share stories!

    Osteot Classes:

    No impact exercise to help improve bone density, strength and exibili-ty. Registration is required: $22 per month. Drop-in fee: $5 per session.Priority is given to Steeves Manor tenants.

    Tesshinkan Ryu Kyu Kobudo is the study of traditional Okinawa weap-onry such as the bo, sai, Tunfa, as well as other indigenous weaponsfrom Okinawa.

    Laughter Yoga

    Laughter Yoga is a fun way to keep t and laugh your buns off all at

    the same time. In this lively interactive class, we use a combination ofyogic breathing and playful exercises to stimulate laughter. Its a greatway to dump stress, release endorphins (the feel-good hormone) andbe more lighthearted when we chuckle out the door.

    UBC Law Students Legal Advice Program

    The Law Students Legal Advice Program (LSLAP) offers free legalservices for low-income people in the Lower Mainland. Law students,working under the guidance of supervising lawyers, provide legalexpertise in a variety of areas including criminal matters, small claims,residential tenancies, WCB, CPP, employment insurance, family law,social assistance, wills and criminal injury compensation.
