Outdoor celebrations dominate socialschedules each summer. Several of these cel-ebrations coordinate with national holidaysor days of national pride and are accompa-nied by barbecues, parades, picnics, andoften fireworks.

Fireworks can add character and excite-ment to group events. When done well, theycan be the focal point of festivities and oftenmark the culmination of a day of fun. Theearliest record of fireworks dates back to 7thcentury China, believed to be the home offireworks. Fireworks have long been a part ofChinese culture and were used to accompanymany festivities. Soon the use of fireworksspread beyond China.

Today, fireworks may be part of militaryhomecomings, large sporting events and somuch more. Holidays like New Year's Eve andthe Fourth of July frequently feature fire-works displays. Fireworks tend to be mostcommonly used during warm-weathermonths, which is why fireworks safety isemphasized throughout June and July.

Each year, the National Fire ProtectionAssociation warns that thousands of people -most often children and teens - are injuredwhile using consumer fireworks. To thenovice, fireworks can be dangerous, even inways people may not realize. Burns, fires, lossof fingers, blindness, and even death are pos-sible. The Alliance to Stop ConsumerFireworks urges the public to avoid the per-sonal use of fireworks and to enjoy displaysconducted by trained professionals whoadhere to various safety protocols.

Those who engage in personal fireworkuse are urged to do so properly and safely. The American Pyrotechnics Association says

47 of the 50 states and the District ofColumbia allow legal "consumer" fireworks.Consider the following safety tips wheneverfireworks are included in the festivities.

• Ensure that fireworks are legal whereyou live before planning a fireworks display.

• Purchase all fireworks, which caninclude everything from cone fountains tosparklers, from a licensed and reputable deal-er.

• Read all instructions before lighting.• Supervise all firework activities, making

sure children do not light any fireworks.• Avoid alcohol and drug use when light-

ing fireworks. Both can impair judgement andcreate hazardous conditions.

• Have safety equipment on hand. Thisincludes safety glasses and ear protection.

• Do not light multiple fireworks at thesame time.

• Use fireworks in a clearing far away frombuildings and vehicles.

• Always have a hose or bucket of wateravailable to douse fireworks.

• Soak "dud" fireworks in a bucket ofwater before discarding them. Wait 20 min-utes before approaching the dud.

• Don't point fireworks at people.• Maintain a safe distance between those

observing the fireworks show and the fire-works.

• Dispose of spent fireworks safely, awayfrom combustible materials.

Fireworks can be an enjoyable componentof celebrations when used responsibly.

Remember fireworks safety when celebrating

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is from a dis-tance.

What Is Kiwanis?★ Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world,

one child and one community at a time. Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world

through service to children and communities.

There are over 8,000 clubs in 96 countries with more than 260,000 adult members

and approximately 320,000 youth.

Germantown, Wisconsin Kiwanis★ Germantown Kiwanis has been serving the community for over 29 years. Its vol-

unteers have raised funds to give back to the community and to help support

Germantown youth with leadership programs in the Germantown schools at the ele-

mentary level with K-Kids, middle school level with Builder’s Club and high school

level with Key Club. These clubs all help kids learn about the value of volunteerism in

the community. In addition, Kiwanis awards educational scholarships; sponsors youth

sports teams, works with the PTA to offer education grants to help teachers develop

special educational programs in the classroom and other volunteer work to support

youth and the community. To support these activities, Kiwanis organizes a number of

fund-raising events including the Germantown July 4th Festivities, the Taste of

Germantown events and the project to build the Gehl Foods Performing Arts Pavilion

in Firemen’s Park.

The Kiwanis Club of Germantown, Wisconsin is proud to support youth in our com-

munity. We are a proud group of community volunteers comprised of individuals from

a wide array of backgrounds. Some of our members volunteer as individuals, parents,

educators, civic leaders, or business owners. Anyone who is interested in making

Germantown a better place to live is welcome to join us!

Meetings★ General weekly meetings are held at 7:30 am every Wednesday at Aldo’s Pizza in

Germantown. General weekly meetings are often times informal, but a great time to

discuss pressing needs of the group or simply to gain fellowship and learn more about

our fellow Kiwanians and happenings in the community. If you are interested in join-

ing or just want to learn more about Kiwanis, feel free to stop in.

If you or someone you know is interested in speaking at a Kiwanis Club meeting,

please get in touch by email – [email protected].

Meeting attendance is not mandatory for members, but is encouraged for all mem-

bers.

If you are interested in learning more about our group, you are always welcome to

attend any meeting!

Thank you for your interest in the Germantown Kiwanis.

On this federal holiday, alsoknown as Independence Day, mark-ing the Colonies’ adoption of theDeclaration of Independence onJuly 4, 1776, which declared inde-pendence from the Great Britainand its king, we thought it wouldbe appropriate to share some funfacts about this historic day. We arealready familiar with the fireworks, parades, barbeque and festivitieslike picnics, fairs, concerts and par-ties that take place on this day, butthere are some things many peopledon’t know about the Fourth.

1. Congress made IndependenceDay an official unpaid holiday forfederal employees in 1870. In 1938,Congress changed IndependenceDay to a paid federal holiday.

2. Only John Hancock actuallysigned the Declaration ofIndependence on July 4, 1776. Allthe others signed later.

3. The Declaration ofIndependence was signed by 56men from 13 colonies.

4. The average age of the Signers of the Declarationof Independence was 45. The youngest was ThomasLynch, Jr (27) of South Carolina. The oldest delegatewas Benjamin Franklin (70) of Pennsylvania. The leadauthor of The Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, was 33.

5. One out of eight signers of the Declaration ofIndependence were educated at Harvard (7 total).

6. The only two signers of the Declaration ofIndependence who later served as President of theUnited States were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

7. The stars on the original American flag were in acircle so all the Colonies would appear equal.

8. The first Independence Day celebration tookplace in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. This was also theday that the Declaration of Independence was first readin public after people were summoned by the ringingof the Liberty Bell.

9. The White House held its first 4th July party in1801.

10. President John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and

James Monroe all died on the Fourth. Adams andJefferson (both signed the Declaration) died on thesame day within hours of each other in 1826.

11. Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey as thenational bird but was overruled by John Adams andThomas Jefferson, who recommended the bald eagle.

12. In 1776, there were 2.5 million people living inthe new nation. Today the population of the U.S.A. is316 million.

13. Fifty-nine places in the U.S. contain the word“liberty” in the name. Pennsylvania, with 11, has moreof these places than any other state. Of the 59 placesnationwide containing “liberty” in the name, four arecounties: Liberty County, Ga. (65,471), Liberty County,Fla. (8,276), Liberty County, Mont. (2,392) and LibertyCounty, Texas (76,571).

14. The most common patriotic-sounding word usedwithin place names is “union” with 136. Pennsylvania, with 33, has more of these places than any other state.Other words most commonly used in place names areWashington (127), Franklin (118), Jackson (96) and

Lincoln (95).15. Fireworks are part of

the tradition of celebratingthis national holiday. TheU.S. imported $227.3 mil-lion worth of fireworks fromChina in 2012. U.S. exportsof fireworks, by comparison, came to just $11.7 mil-lionin 2012, with Israel purchas-ing more than any othercountry ($2.5 million).

16. In 2012, vast majori-ty of imported U.S. flags($3.6 million) was made inChina.

17. Barbecue is also bigon Independence Day.Approximately 150 millionhot dogs and 700 millionpounds of chicken are con-sumed on this day.

18. Every 4th of July theLiberty Bell in Philadelphiais tapped (not actually rung)thirteen times in honor ofthe original thirteencolonies.

19. Traditions place the origins of “Yankee Doodle”as a pre-Revolutionary War song originally sung byBritish military officers to mock the disheveled, disor-ganized colonial “Yankees” with whom they served inthe French and Indian War. It is believed that the tunecomes from the nursery rhyme Lucy Locket. One ver-sion of the Yankee Doodle lyrics is “generally attrib-uted” to Doctor Richard Shuckburgh, a British Armysurgeon. According to one story, Shuckburgh wrote thesong after seeing the appearance of Colonial troopsunder Colonel Thomas Fitch, V, the son of ConnecticutGovernor Thomas Fitch.[2]

20. The tune of the National An-them was original-ly used by an English drinking song called “toAnacreon in Heaven.” The words have nothing to dowith consumption of alcohol but the “melody thatFrancis Key had in mind when he wrote those wordsdid originate decades earlier as the melody for a songpraise of wine.” http://www.colonialmusic.org/Resource/Anacreon.htm
