4-H Greetings Happy New Year! With the new year beginning we are given the opportunity to reflect on previous years and set new goals for this year. In the spirit of setting goals for the new year and up- coming livestock show season here are a few things I would like to challenge ALL 4-H members, parents and volunteers with. THIS YEAR: Believe that anything is possible when you set your mind to it, start each project with goals in mind, try something new, find the best in others, and show others the best in YOU! The 65th Annual Kleberg-Kenedy County Junior Livestock Show is scheduled for Jan 15th– Feb 6th, 2016. Attached is a complete schedule of events. Livestock exhibitors, continue working with your projects. First and second year exhibitors are strongly urged to attend clinics or seek guidance from experienced exhibitors/ families.   • Kleberg-Kenedy County AgriLife Extension Service complies with the law set forth by legislature

    regarding eligibility and school absences. Members competing or simply participating in a 4-H

    event (food show, fashion show, livestock show, etc.) must be certified as eligible to participate by

    their respective schools. School officials will be provided with a list of students entered in competi-

    tive and/or non-competitive 4-H events. Should a student be ineligible due to their respective School

    District’s Policy (grades, absenteeism, discipline, etc.), school officials will be notified in writing of

    their ineligibility status by our office.

    Individuals with disabilities who require an auxiliary aid, service, or accommodation in order to par-

    ticipate in any 4-H event are encouraged to contact their County Extension Agent at 361.595.8566 at

    least one week in advance of the program in order for proper arrangements to be made.

  • Managers-please start taking your 4-H club pictures within the next couple of weeks.

    Pictures can be submitted to the Extension Office, preferably emailed to Niki Kaiser

    ([email protected]). Photos will appear in the January edition of the Kingsville

    Record. Label Photo with club name and members, list left to right, front to back row.

    All photos are Due by Jan. 12th.

    Note: Photos submitted from phones will not print as high quality as from cameras.

    County 4-H Council will meet on Monday January 4th, 6:30 p.m. at the

    Extension Office. Delegates please attend. Any 4-H members interested

    in being a county council officer are invited to attend to learn more about

    county activities!

    Congratulations to the Kleberg-Kenedy County 4-H’ers that participated in the District 12 4-H Food Show & Food Challenge Contest in November. We truly have some amazingly talented individuals in our program. The time and dedication put into the Food & Nutrition Projects is fantastic.

    Texas 4-H Scholarship Guidelines/Instructions and Applications are available at the

    Extension Office. Graduating seniors are encouraged to take advantage of any and all

    scholarships. Deadline: January 15, 2015. A training is scheduled for December 14th at

    the Extension Office at 6:00 p.m. MUST RSVP or training will not be held.

  • To help plan the upcoming County Fashion Show, a planning meeting is scheduled

    for Tuesday, January 19th, 6:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. Clubs responsible for

    assisting with this event are:

    VALIDATION DATES: See attached list of upcoming KKJLS validation dates. Please

    mark these dates on your calendar! At validation, a $5/head fee will apply to the follow-

    ing species: steer, swine, goat, and lamb. A $3/head validation fee will apply for rab-

    bits. This will be collected at validation.

    KKJLS RABBIT EXHIBITIORS:

    - The Extension Office has an “ARBA Standards of Perfection” rule book for exhibitors to

    come read the sections that pertain to our show.

    - Rabbit scales will be available at the Extension Office for anyone wanting to weigh

    their rabbit projects.

  • Livestock Project Scales:

    *There are several sets of scales located throughout the community for 4-H members to use to weigh their lamb,

    goat, and swine projects. Rabbit Scales and Clippers are also available at the Extension Office.

    -2 sets at the County Extension Office

    -1 set in Sarita for Kenedy County 4-Hers

    -1 set at Drew and Christina Titus Residence (387 West County Rd. 2140, Kingsville, TX)

    -1 set at Richard Chapa’s Residence (2388 E FM 1717, Kingsville, TX 78363)

    -1 set at Darrel Munoz Residence (intersection of FM 772 East & CR 1065 located in back of front fence)

    Livestock project clinics for beef, goat, lamb, and swine exhibitors will

    begin in December. These clinics are intended to be informal (one-on-

    one). Discussion will focus on where exhibitors should be with their pro-

    ject, feed program, parasite control, sanitation, weighing of the project,

    questions, etc. (Note: Swine exhibitors are not recommended to bring

    their project). Take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about

    your respective project. The following dates have been set aside for these

    clinics:

    Livestock Workday: Jan. 17th 3-5 p.m. H.M. Ag Farm on FM 1717

    Clipping/Shearing Clinic: Jan 31st 8-10 am. H.M. Ag Farm on FM 1717

    City ordinance governs livestock within the Kingsville City Limits. Typically, with the

    approval of neighbors, 4-H and FFA members are allowed to keep certain projects

    within the city limits.

    FMI on city ordinance, please contact the City/County Health Department (592-3324)

    City of Kingsville Livestock Projects:

    Ticket Booth Fundraiser:

    Attached is a work schedule for the annual 4-H fundraiser. This is the biggest fundraiser the 4-H pro-

    gram has as a whole. The money raised is used to purchase awards for 4-H events, provide scholarships

    to members attending leadership events, purchase items to conduct community service projects, repair

    equipment (scales, sharpen blades, clippers, etc.) Club managers- please have at least one or two adults

    and a few members during your assigned time.
