CVP was measured non invasively using controlled compression ultrasound of a forearm vein.

Results

All isometric manoeuvres resulted in a significant increase in CVP (p<0.01):

CVP at rest 7.1 ± 4.1 cmH2O

Abdominal crunch 12.2 ± 7.2 cmH2O

Hip crossover 20.6 ± 9.0 cmH2O

Floor rise 14.3 ± 4.7 cmH2O

Hip crossover showed a higher increase in CVP compared to AC (p<0.05) and FR (p<0.05)

In this study we demonstrate a significant increase in central venous pressure during isometric provocation manoeuvres.

The highest increase was observed during “hip crossover”. These observations in healthy persons may be relevant in patients with congestive heart failure.
