Andries van Heerden CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

to reinforce Afrimat’s position as a serious

contender in the infrastructure space.

Unfortunately the 2008/2009 financial year saw the world sliding into the worst financial crisis in 80 years. The full impact of this crisis is not known yet, but we can see that South Africa will not escape unharmed. Every aspect of the South African economy is feeling the impact, and Afrimat was also affected. Our existing markets, specifically in the Western Cape, declined sharply resulting in a decline in

profits from the previous year.

The financially responsible, but extremely difficult decision was taken to hold back on salary increases of all staff and to request the unions to follow suit. Although no-one is happy about the need to wait, the vast majority of our 1 350 employees have indicated that they understood. We will proceed with wage negotiations by June when information about the performance of Afrimat up to February 2009 is audited and published. A better assessment of the financial prospects of Afrimat will then

exist.

sal verdwyn.

The most significant immediate difference each of us can make is to delight our cus-

HISTORY IN THE MAKING tomers with excellent service and to curb costs. Our customers are the reason why we are in business, and they are entitled to excellent service. The customer is pri-marily the one who receives our products. Internally your customer is the one that receives your output, and therefore also

entitled to excellent service.

To curb costs is simply to apply good disci-pline. We need to plan better and avoid inefficiencies and duplication. We need to be concerned with waste and optimise income out of our resources. We need to assess each expense (such as each trip and each phone call we make) and eliminate those that does not add value. We must embrace a work ethic that adds value to the business. We must ensure that we do not allow ourselves or our

colleagues not to pull their weight.

TTTT he 2009 financial year ended on 28 February. This was the year of

Loyiso DotwanaLoyiso DotwanaLoyiso DotwanaLoyiso Dotwana Director, Afrimat

Loyiso was born on 18 October 1963. He went to a primary

school in Ilinge, a small village in Queenstown. He completed his

matric (Grade 12) at Freemantle High in Lady Frey in Queens-

town.

He obtained his B.Sc. (Civil Engineering) degree at University of

Cape Town.

Loyiso's first job was with Basil Read, a construction company.

From there he moved to Bosch & Associates (civil engineering

consultants). He then went into property development with a

company called Inframax. Loyiso has worked as a civil engineer

in design and project management for more than twenty years.

He specialized in design and contract administration of town-

ship services, rural and urban roads and national roads. He has

been involved in the conceptual and detailed design of bulk

services for the Coega Industrial Development Zone in Port

Elizabeth.

Twelve years ago Loyiso founded Illiso Consulting (Pty) Limited,

one of South Africa’s largest black-owned consulting engineer-

ing companies, of which he is currently a director and the major

shareholder.

In 2001 Loyiso and some of his colleagues saw an opportunity

in the market to transport petroleum products for Engen, and

they started a wholly black owned company called Mega Oils. In

2004 Mega Oils got involved at Prima Quarries in the first

quarrying BEE deal in the Western Cape. With the formation of Afrimat this relationship was extended with Mega Oils being

the primary BEE partner of Afrimat. Loyiso is a director on the board of Afrimat.

Loyiso's message to the employees of Afrimat is that we have a great future at this company and in this country. Afrimat is

strategically positioned to be able to respond to excellent opportunities in the developing South Africa.

His most important lesson to each employee is to focus on what you are doing, and to do it right the first time.

Loyiso believes that it is important to be totally dedicated to what you do to be successful. To be able to continuously

improve yourself, you have to improve your skills. Others can help you, but you are in control of your own destiny. Choose

wisely!

Ulundi CMP Grows

Production capacity at Ulundi Precast has been increased by 30%.

The 28 year old block plant that faithfully produced bricks since

1981 has been replaced with a brand new VB1, commissioned in

March.

Ulundi has experienced a steep increase in demand. The new

plant will enable Afrimat to serve customers’ growing needs, and

will establish capacity for further extension of our market share.

Davin Giles (Divisional Manager - Sales for Aggregates South) had a long-standing dream to do certain things before he turned 40. This included climbing the highest mountain in Africa and completing the Argus cycle tour of 110km. When he turned 39 in 2008, his wife Joanne (Financial Manager, Afrimat Readymix Cape) reminded him of his dream. In February this year Davin climbed Kilimanjaro and reached the summit a mere two days before he turned 40. Last year he completed Die Burger cycle tour of 98 km, and this year he completed The Argus cycle tour of 110 km. All eyes are now on the Comrades…

Afrimat is committed to be held accountable for good business practices, and not to allow wrongdoing. It is a fundamental condition of every employment contract that an employee will faithfully serve his or her employer and not disclose confidential information about the employer’s affairs. If, however, an individual discovers information which they believe shows serious malpractice or wrongdoing within Afrimat then this informa-tion should be disclosed internally without fear of reprisal. Arrange-ments should be in place to enable this to be done independently of line management. In relatively minor instances the line manager would still be the appropriate person to be told. To achieve this Afrimat has developed a Whistle Blowing Policy. The policy can be viewed at your HR Manager. This policy is intended to assist individuals who believe they have discovered malpractice or impropriety. It is not designed to question financial or business decisions taken by Afrimat, nor should it be used to reconsider any matters which have already been addressed under other proce-dures (e.g. the harassment, disciplinary, grievance procedures). Employees, customers and suppliers are encouraged to provide information of any irregular activities such as fraud, theft, corruption or any other transgression of Afrimat policy/code of ethics. FRAUD & THEFT: FRAUD & THEFT: FRAUD & THEFT: FRAUD & THEFT: ZERO TOLERANCEZERO TOLERANCEZERO TOLERANCEZERO TOLERANCE

The Executive Management Committee (EXCO) of Afrimat has expressed their concern about some incidents where our employees got involved in theft. Any excuse offered to justify this type of behaviour is invalid. The actions of a minority could have a devastating effect on their employer and colleagues. WHY IS THEFT A PROBLEM? There is a popular argument that South Africa has a culture of tolerance for crime which is fanned by the relative low rate of success in criminal prosecution of the perpetrators of crime. Simply put – criminals often get away with their crimes, making it a lower risk activity than in countries that has a sound grip on crime. Afrimat is committed to stamp out every form of dishonesty, and call on those honest employees whose careers are being put at risk to come forward with information of any such activity. Employees are warned that Afrimat will defend its future by acting firmly against any person who makes themselves guilty of fraud or theft. Such perpetrators will be dealt with in each area where they were in breach: the law (criminal prosecution) and their employment status (dismissal).

PLAY OUR WORD-GAME
