BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH

Instead of our usual Family ofthe Month selection, I’m

asking for Knights to consider serving, along with your

Chair Couple. Each Knights of Columbus council has

been tasked with appointing a BDC Chair Couple, and

known in their parish, and who would inspire council

and parish families to give BDC programs a try.

Please prayerfully consider if this is something you

and your spouse might be interested in, and if so, email

me at [email protected]. For more information, paste

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE This month we continue our journey through the 40 days

of Lent, making our small sacrifices as we ponder the

greatest sacrifice – that “God so loved the world that he

gave his only Son...” (John 3: 16). He gave what He did not

require of Abraham, our father in faith, when He put him to

the test (Genesis 22: 1-18). He gave us the eternal “Lamb,”

the “good Shepherd, who lays down his life for the sheep”

(John 10: 11-18). This month I highlight the “Triduum,” or

the three days before our celebration of the Resurrection on

Easter since we end the month of March with those three

good and holy days.

I would like to welcome again the 39 new Brother

Knights who took their Admissions Degree on February 15th, and would like to once again

thank all those who helped get the word out at St. Charles, St. Ann, St. Agnes and St. James

parishes, especially Mark Stoffel, Bryant Porter, Owen Beirne and David Nassar who

organized those efforts. Also, thanks again to the many Brothers who participated in that

combined Admissions and Formation degrees, but especially our honorees, PGK Kenny Goss,

Jr. (1st) and PGK Art Gamotis (2nd).

Don’t forget we have a Knighthood (3rd) Degree scheduled for Sunday, March 11th, and

Family Breakfast is on Palm Sunday, followed by Easter Brunch on Easter Sunday (April

1st). May God bless you all in this holy season.

Vivat Jesus!

The summit of the

Liturgical Year is the Easter

Triduum—from the evening

of Holy Thursday to the

evening of Easter Sunday.

Though chronologically

three days, they are

liturgically one day

unfolding for us the unity of

Christ’s Paschal Mystery.

The single celebration of

the Triduum marks the end

of the Lenten season, and

leads to the Mass of the

Resurrection of the Lord at

the Easter Vigil.

Leon Bonnat

The liturgical services that

take place during the Triduum are:

Mass of the Lord’s Supper

Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion

Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord

dedication to the KofC & EDW. On the reverse side of the barrel

are etched the words, “Watch it!,” in honor of our Brother Tom

LENTEN FAST & ABSTINENCE (WWW.USCCB.ORG)

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of

fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays

during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on

fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When

fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as

two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.

The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding

upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14

onwards. (Members of the Eastern Catholic Churches are to

observe the particular law of their own “sui iuris” Church).

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the

Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast”

to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to

prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more

readily his Resurrection.

PROTECTING WIDOWS – A FOUNDING GOAL

As a member of this council, you know how important

spouses can be to the charitable works of the Order. If you’re

married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many

events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds

great value and impact to what a council can achieve.

When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J.

McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect

Catholic families, but especially wives and children. Today, we

remain committed to this mission by offering insurance

products and fraternal benefits designed with that goal in mind.

One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called

Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the

Knights of Columbus philosophy of helping our widows.

This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer

plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife

on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides

for waiver of premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event

of the insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses

ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The

rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain

other triggering events occur.

Our products are designed with your needs and budget in

mind. With a solid portfolio of life insurance, long-term

care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights

of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals.

To learn more about these solutions, contact us today.

LADIES U-KNIGHTED NEWS JO BALSAMO WOOD

This year, Easter is Sunday, April 1.

Ladies U-Knighted wants to help you by once again

offering our beautiful hand-made chocolate, Easter-themed

pops to add to your children’s Easter baskets. The cost of

each chocolate pop is $3.00 or two for $5.00. If you would

like to place an order, please send an email to Jo Balsamo

Wood at [email protected] with “LUK Easter

Pops” in the Subject line. Please indicate the number and

type of pops you are ordering (Cross, Easter egg or Lamb)

in your email (see photo below for a sample of the pops). If

you miss the chance to pre-order, we will be selling them at

the Family Breakfast and the Annual Easter Egg roll.

Due to the overwhelming response in recent years, LUK

is once again collecting items to support the organization “A

Woman’s Choice” who give women the opportunity to

preserve the lives of their unborn children. Because of issues

with transporting all the expectant mothers to the Old

Council Home and then transporting them and the gifts back

to their homes, this year we are, once again, having a “virtual

shower” where we are collecting gifts from now until May

11, to provide the expectant mothers with their own

Mother’s Day presents. LUK will transport the donations

directly to the Director of A Woman’s Choice. We are

asking that you donate an unwrapped gift to this event.

Suggestion for tax-deductible gifts include: diapers

(newborn – 5), pull-ups, baby wipes, unused bottles and

pacifiers, toys, umbrella strollers, pack n’plays, baby

shampoo, lotion, powder, new or slightly used clothing

newborn - 4T, receiving blankets, bibs, rattles and gift cards.

In addition, we are putting together gift bags for the mothers.

We are asking for donations of small personal items, such as

hand cream, lipstick, notepads, etc. for several

gift bags. You may drop off donations at the LUK closet

on the second floor of the Old Council Home. For more

information or to arrange to drop off gifts, please contact

Alison at (703) 304-6639 or Kathi at 703-425-6725.

We are always looking for new members. For those of

you that are unfamiliar with Ladies U-Knighted, we are a

group of women that support and promote the goals and

endeavors of the Knights of Columbus, Edward Douglass

White Council No. 2473 by raising funds through volunteer

efforts. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each

month at the K of C Old Council Home, 5115 Little Falls

Road, Arlington, VA. Membership is open to any woman

who is compelled to help those in need, provide excellence

in its many activities, whether religious, charitable, or social,

meet new people and have fun. Please stop by for a meeting

or follow us on Facebook at Ladies U-Knighted.

Local fire departments recommend changing the bat-

teries in every smoke alarm in your house, as the clocks

are set ahead. Wishing a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and St.

Joseph’s Day to all. LUK wishes a very happy birthday

to Robyn Stewart (3/3), Monica Trinidad (3/12), Donna

Miller (3/18) and LUK Vice President, Maria Montoya

(3/23). The next LUK meeting is on March 1 at 7:30.

PROOF OF PLUNGE!!

Thank you to everyone who provided financial and moral

support to Special Olympics!

Team EDW raised $8,879 this year!

The 2018 Polar Plunge Virginia was an incredible success!

Special Olympics Virginia is expecting this year’s plunge to be their

most successful fundraiser yet, with over $1.1 million brought in.

Your financial & moral support enabled the Knights of Columbus

State team and Team EDW to play a huge part in that success. The

face of Team EDW was 10-year-old, Allison White, who finished in

3rd place in individual fundraising out of over 2,600 plungers with

$8,503! The State team finished in 2nd place in team fundraising,

with EDW representing about 20% of their effort.

In the three short years EDW has participated in the Special

Olympics plunge effort you’ve helped raise over $16,000 for

Virginia’s intellectually disabled.

The money that is collected at the plunge is used to hold

athletic events and provide health care for our family members,

friends and neighbors who are intellectually disabled.

You have our appreciation, respect and gratitude for supporting

Special Olympics in such a massive manner!
