Dunwoody Crier Features Our State Award

The June 14th issue of The Dunwoody Crier newspaper featured our state award presentation on page 6 of that issue. Here is that article. Shown below is the Council Activity Award plaque to be added to our McGivney walls. Also shown is page one of the 39 page submission which detailed all the electronic and software initiatives that All Saints has utilized to make it unique among all other councils. We are blessed to have so many members who are so in tune with all the technology coming into vogue these days. It truly makes us an efficient and tight-knit group.

“Knights Helping Widows” Program Starts

6

I just received your lovely letter offering help of all kinds to us widows. What a wonderful act of kindness! I can't thank the Knights enough and it will be a comfort for me to know I have a place to turn when I need some "fixing". My husband was very handy and could do anything so his talents are greatly missed. Thank you to all of you wonderful Knights. If you are as handy with household tasks as you are with the Fish Fry, you must be a great success!. Please pass my thanks and prayers on to your fellow Knights. Sally Horan

“Knights Helping Widows” is intended to be a “Handy-Man Similar” resource for those widows who have no one to help them with minor household problems that might present a hazard to health and safety. A short list of some of these problems include: light switches and receptacles that don’t work, plumbing leaks, toilet repair, hinges, locks, door bells, carpet bunching, smoke alarms, out of reach, light bulb replacement, installation of safety bars, weatherproofing windows and doors, nonslip surface preparation, and more. We will provide the labor with you providing the material neeed for the repair. What does a widow needing help do? Call or email our Program Coordinator, John Shaffer at 770-349-5278 or [email protected]. John will forward your request to a Knight who will contact you to set up an appointment. When he meets with you, he will have Knights of Columbus Identification and appropriate release forms. After evaluating your needs, he will make recommenda-tions and setup a repair schedule. In some instances, it may be necessary to make alternative recommendations if you live outside our service area or your issues require

greater expertise than we can offer. In such an event, we are prepared to have someone available to help you ask the right questions when you are negotiating with a contractor or other service provider. When repairs are completed, we will follow-up to assure that the work has been done to your satisfaction. We, the members of All Saints Knights of Columbus, pray that you find a small bit of peace and comfort in knowing that your husband’s spirit lives on through the spirit of our Council.

If you are willing to become a handyman for minor fixes at the homes of our council widows, please contact John Shaffer at his contact info shown above. Our Widows Committee is becom-ing more active in maintaining communications with all our widows. Recently we sent Easter cards to all widows whose addresses we have. We already invite our widows to play monthly BINGO at Council expense. Below is a lovely letter from one of our widows. They love hearing from the council.

Elections for the 2017-2018 Fraternal Year beginning July 1st were held at the June

Business Meeting on June 6th. There were 89 voting members in attendance.

Shown below are the results of that election. Note that there was a contested

election for Grand Knight this year. Our incumbent Grand Knight Pat Fahey

prevailed over BJ Van Gundy to begin service for a second year. Offices which are

appointed or trustee automatic advancements were not part of the election.

The very important Chancellor position is still open. The duties of this position are

stated below. We need someone to step up to this vital office.

GRAND KNIGHT Pat Fahey (incumbent) CHAPLAIN Appointed (currently, Msgr. Hugh Marren)

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT Jim Gonzales (incumbent)

CHANCELLOR Open

RECORDER Bob Abney (incumbent)

FINANCIAL SECRETARY Appointed (Ralph O’Connor, incumbent)

TREASURER Dominic Palermo (incumbent)

LECTURER Appointed (Bill Luckert, incumbent)

ADVOCATE Steve Strong (incumbent)

WARDEN Bill Driscoll (incumbent)

INSIDE GUARD Charlie Lynch (currently, outside guard)

Nick Mattera (incumbent)

OUTSIDE GUARD Brian Benninghoff (incumbent)

Gene Gannon (currently, inside guard)

ONE YEAR TRUSTEE Bob Mitchell (automatic advancement from two year trustee)

TWO YEAR TRUSTEE Dean Trantow (automatic advancement from three year trustee)

THREE YEAR TRUSTEE Ernie Spencer (newly elected)

Chancellor Duties “Upon you falls the duty of wisely imparting to all members of Order lessons which may well decide the comparative success with which they will exercise the responsibilities of their membership. It will be your privilege to act in an advisory role to the Grand Knight - to be part of the team of Officers. The title of "Chancellor" is symbolic of the cooperation that you will provide to the chosen leader of the Council. The office to which you have been chosen is of vital importance and demands your zealous consideration. Match well the words you address to them with exemplary conduct in your personal and fraternal life and yours will be the supreme satisfaction of knowing that you are truly-a WORTHY CHANCELLOR.” The Chancellor will also head the team that recruits new members into the council and

guides them through the process of advancement. It was stressed firmly that the Chancellor

will supervise the recruiting, retention, and progression teams, but not do all the work alone.

Too much has been expected from the Chancellor position previously.

Tootsie Roll Drive Raises Funds

8

The weekend of June 10/11 saw a renewal of our annual Tootsie Roll Drive to combat Intellectual Disabilities. All funds raised are sent to the Georgia Columbia Charities Division of the Knights to be disbursed for these purposes. We raised over $2,700 at the Orchard Park Kroger, the Dunwoody Village Ace Hardware, and the doors of All Saints church.

Our Sir Knight Monsignor Donald Kiernan hoisted a donation canister before Saturday Mass to collect a few donations personally.

Sir Knight John Shaffer, center, managed the Tootsie Roll Drive. He is shown here relieving Stan and Kathy Wasowski of some of their extra cash.

Chancellor Dick Marklein Appreciation Award

Our Worthy Chancellor Dick Marklein (right) is stepping down from his role. The council gave him a special appreciation award for his years of service. He was responsible for dozens of new recruits and progressed them through the levels of knighthood. His 52-day bike ride across America was recognized as the most amazing event in our council history. It will not be easy to replace him in this Chancellor role.

Past Grand Knight Lou Hlad (right) presents Pat and Bill Camden with the Family of the Month award at the June Business Meeting. They were most deserving.

State Award Recognition

Chinese Community Has New Banner Members of the Holy Name of Jesus Chinese Mission proudly hold up their new Knights of Columbus banner. Our Sir Knight Father Bill Hao stands in the rear, while our Dick Marklein is shown at the right. Their membership is still contained within the All Saints Council until they have enough members to split off into their own council. The banner did not unfurl enough to show the Knights of Columbus words at the bottom.

At the June Business meeting, Grand Knight Pat Fahey showed off our latest State Award Plaque given to All Saints at the recent Georgia State Convention in Savannah. It was awarded for our submission entitled “Establishing an Electronic Council”. John Shaffer, Lou Hlad, Fahey, BJ Van Gundy, and Steve Strong were the usual suspects in putting together the technology and efforts for making the award possible.

Seminarian Jack Knight Ordained One of our four seminarians in our Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP), Jack Knight, was ordained a Transitional Deacon by Archbishop Wilton Gregory on May 27th. This means he is on track to become a priest as well and has taken a vow of celibacy. He will serve for the summer at Prince of Peace Church before returning to the seminary. Rev. Mr. Knight, 30, served as a missionary in the Caribbean, Latin America, and also Europe in his early college years. As a deacons, he will preach at Mass and serve at funerals. He may also baptize new Catholics and witness weddings. “I am looking forward to listening to the Lord to point out his ministry for me. It is because God directs my ministry that each opportunity to serve is exciting to me,” said Rev. Mr. Knight. The son of jack and Lelis Knight, grew up in Buford and at Prince of Peace Church, Flowery Branch. Parish Deacon Bill Donohue was asked to vest him. “I look up to this man as a simple, devoted, hardworking, loving man of God who serves with conviction and ease,” Rev. Mr. Knight said. Having now become a Deacon, he continues on with seminarian classes toward the priesthood.

Bro. John Klein is Deacon in July

13

Our Council’s Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP) has realized another success story with the announcement that Brother John Klein of the Legionaires of Christ religious order will be ordained a deacon on July 8th in Cheshire, Connecticut. We have been helping him with his expenses for some years. He will be assigned to the Holy Spirit Grade School and High School in Atlanta after his July ordination. Then on December 16th, he will travel back to Rome to be ordained a priest with all the members of his diaconate class. We are proud to have played a part in his journey to Deacon and then Priest in our archdiocese. We have been helping four seminarians with this program.

Archbishop Gregory Honors 50/60 Year Weddings

Couples Celebrating 50th and 60th Anniversaries in 2017 Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory would like to honor all catholic couples married in 1967 and 1957 with an invitation to a Golden/Diamond Wedding Anniversary Mass on Saturday, October 7, at 12:00pm at Saint Brigid Catholic Church. A reception will follow the Mass for the anniversary couples and their families. Space is limited. Please go to http://tiny.cc/anniversarymass to RSVP for this event and for additional information. We have about ten such eligible couples every year and we encourage them to apply for this nice luncheon with Archbishop Wilton Gregory.

Fr. Bryan Kuhr Chalice Presentation July 16

13

This article in the All Saints News predicts the fact that Deacon Bryan Kuhr is now Father Bryan Kuhr as you read this. Our Fr. Charles J. Watters Fourth Degree Assembly has chosen him to receive one of our memorial chalice travel kits to accompany him whenever he travels to a location without Mass accoutrements.

On Sunday July 16th at the 10:30 Mass at All Saints, Father Bryan Kuhr and Monsignor Marren will concelebrate the Mass. Fr. Kuhr has already been donated a regular chalice by family and friends, but the Assembly will formally donate him this Mass Travel Kit as he has requested. The chalice in this kit will be engraved with the names of Sir Knights Dennis Crean and Thomas Templeton of All Saints. We honor all our deceased fourth degree brothers in this fashion. Father Kuhr’s name will be engraved on the paten and the outside carrier case. We hope that many of our brothers will be present at that Mass to view the presentation to occur just after the Mass ends. Father Kuhr is, after all, one of our All Saints boys (although he is now a member of KofC St. Brigid Council).

We just wanted to thank you for all your help in making the Marriage Vow Renewal event successful - Laura Leach for the sign up of the Social Hall; Matt Allen for the set up and clean up of the Social Hall and help with the coffee; Lou Hlad and Beth McTighe for the great messages in the bulletin and Knights News; Deacon Ed Krise for assisting and coordinating with Monsignor Fennessey in leading Renewal of Marriage Vows; and for David Emery and Pat Fahey for their leadership and guidance

during this process. Brother Rich Tomaszewski was very involved as well.

The hands of the Council are all over this event.

Council Community Involvement

Our Sir Knight Jim Gonzales (right) lends a hand with State Membership Director Scott Reed at the 2017 Eucharistic Congress Event on June 17th. They are shown at the KofC information booth at that event handing out flyers with information about joining the Order.

As we do every year, our giant cooker and food serving team was present at the Northeast Georgia Soap Box Derby event. The council had a racer in the event, Sir Knight Bryan Kler had a family racer in the event, and the All Saints Cub Scouts prepared their racer in our McGivney Hall. We have been strong supporters of the Soap Box Derby since it began.

Shown above is the new electronic payment page on our council kc11402.org web site. You go to that web site, choose “Members Enter Here”, log in with your last name and membership number (on your member card), choose “2017 Dues Payment”, and then get to above screen. You may then pay your dues online for $41.50 (which includes a $1.50 electronic processing fee) by using a credit card or your PayPal account which takes that amount directly out of your checking account like a debit card. Your personal PayPal account must be set up independently. A new second web page choice allows you to set up automatic $41.50 PayPal payments for 5 years. Of course, you may still pay your normal 2017 annual dues of $40 directly at a meeting or send a $40 check made out to “KofC Council 11402” to our Financial Secretary, Ralph O’Connor, at 390 17th St., NW, Unit 5069, Atlanta, GA 30363. His email is [email protected]. If a member is less than 26 years old on December 31, 2016, annual dues are only $20. If you are a designated “Honorary” member (65 years old and a Knight for 25 consecutive years), your dues are only $10. Priests, deacons, or members of a religious order pay no dues. Anyone who has been a Knight for 50 unbroken years likewise pays no dues.

George T. Doyle Chris Doyle

JoAnn Doyle, 79, the wife of our council brother George Doyle and the mother of our council brother Chris Doyle passed away on June 20th after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
