Brothers, While our focus shifts to supporting our world-famous Fish Fry Dinner nights, we also have these upcoming activities:

Coming Up in March Our council’s business meeting on Tuesday, 7 March, will be followed by a delicious Jambalaya Feast cooked by our own resident Cajun Chef, Brother EJ Couvillion. The council will sponsor a KofC Trivia Night on Tuesday, 14 March for all parishioners and Knights in McGivney Hall. Give-away gifts and free pizza. Cash bar.

Our Recruiting Weekend runs Saturday, 18 March through Sunday, 19 March. Please plan to be available to talk with our parishioner men at the end of your attended Mass. An Open House in McGivney on 21 March invites candidates.

On Monday, 27 March, we will assist the Boy Scouts prepare the Spaghetti Dinner for their BSA Court of Honor in the Social Hall.

February in Review Chinese New Year Celebrations went off with a firecracker “bang” at The Holy Name of Jesus Chinese Catholic Mission. Thanks to our organizer, Brother Dominic Palermo, and all the other traffic control volunteers.

While we won’t talk about the final score, the Super Bowl Party with Pot Luck, hosted by Brother Nick and Patty Mattera, was a social event “touchdown”!

Notes and Thoughts Dues not paid and have questions? Contact our Financial Secretary, Brother Ralph O’Connor, at (404) 242-1234 or [email protected].

Don’t have KofC insurance and want to learn more of the insurance and financial services opportunities? Contact our Field Agent, Brother Nick Shaw at (404) 520-8371 or [email protected].

Thanks to all our brothers and spouses supporting our Practice Fry and the first of our seven, community-wide Fish Fry Dinners. Our meals-served count is slightly ahead of last year; see the late-breaking details in this newsletter.

I’d like to acknowledge the start of the Lenten season and our period of self-examination with a quote from Father Richard Veras, one of the many writers in the Magnificat’s 2017 Lenten Companion:

At the February Business meeting, Sir Knight Bob Abney was elected as our replacement Worthy Recorder. He succeeds Sir Knight Steve Strong who moved on to become our Worthy Advocate. The Worthy Recorder has these stated duties:

“The Recorder shall file all reports in a filing book and he shall preserve the records of the Council regarding meetings and all correspondence.” Computer literacy and digital competence has become mandatory since these bylaws were originally penned.

Because he was formerly our Inside Guard, that position is now open and applicants for same are being taken. Nick Mattera is still our other Inside Guard.

The Worthy Inside Guard has these stated duties: Making sure all attendees present their membership card, keeping order during meetings, taking attendance logs, counting the exact number of attendees for elections, passing out handouts, selling 50/50 tickets, determining Attendance Award prizes, and acting as a member of the Worthy Warden’s staff to help set up and clean up after the business meetings. If you feel you are qualified for this position, please contact any of our three trustees who form the nominating committee. Any officer must be at least a third-degree brother. Bob Mitchell Bob Fiscella Dean Trantow 770-804-8060 404-644-5220 678-296-6326 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Election can commence at the March meeting. Nominations can also be taken now or then.

On February 18th, Joseph G. Tuttle travelled to St. Jude the Apostle Council 16513 to participate in their 1st degree exemplification. Joe is a 50-year-old All Saints parishioner married to wife Linda. Joe is our 20th new member this fraternal year. We need to have 35 by June 30th to achieve another Star Council Award. On the weekend of March 18/19, we will hold a parish-wide membership drive at the doors of the church at all Masses. We will need volunteers to man the tables and hand out literature about the Order. Please ask a friend to join, and when they do you will receive one of our customized engraved drinking mugs.

New Brothers at McGivney Events

No Photo Available

for new French Brother

Stephen Martin Guang Quan Lin Cun Chun Wei

Sasikumar Munisamy Ky Phanhsavath Hugues De Benoist

You have probably noticed that many of our latest member additions lack Anglo-Saxon names. The diversity of our council and parish are changing. New brothers Lin and Wei are actually members of The Holy Name of Jesus Chinese Mission. Because they do not yet have a council, they are assigned to us. Existing Brother Phanhsavath also of that mission, acted as an interpreter. We actually added four new members on February 28th. Existing Brother Munisamy is from India (we finally obtained a photo). New Brother Hugues De Benoist is a parish member from France. He left before we got a photo. Please welcome these new brothers warmly.

Holy Name of Jesus Chinese Mission Outreach The Chinese community which spun off from All Saints to form their new diocesan mission has invited our participation in their Chinese events and is wanting to maintain a close rela-tionship to All Saints. Their Spiritual Director is our own Sir Knight Father Bill Hao. Father Bill recently asked us to speak to his parishioners about the Knights of Columbus, since his Chinese community lacks knowledge about the Order. Besides Father Bill, five of their congregation are already brothers in our council. We have decided to institute a Roundtable at HNofJ Mission. This is an official outreach prior to the formation of a council. Our Grand Knight Pat Fahey and Chancellor Dick Marklein were at the Mission on Sunday, February 26th to speak regarding the Order. Here are pictures. ————————- Right: Professor Paul Ku with GK Pat Fahey . Dr. Ku is Professor of Chemical Engineering at Georgia Tech.

New 4th Degree Brother in February

Whole Foods Market Appreciation Certificate

We presented this framed certificate of appreciation to Manager Mike Shively of Whole Foods Market in Sandy Springs for their generous donation of all the meat for our Council Christmas Party. 6

On February 25th 2017, our Joseph H. Thibadeau became a Sir Knight at the 4th degree exemplification held at St. Monica Parish. Since he had joined the Order on March 29, 2016, he progressed from 1st to 4th degree in only 11 months. We congratulate Joe on his accomplishment and note that he is our 157th Sir Knight. He is now also a member of the Fr. Charles J. Watters Assembly 2688 with their 210 members from All Saints, St. Andrew, and Mary Our Queen Councils.

Fish Fry Cleanup Preparation Day Before the parish can even think about holding their gigantic Fish Fry event that covers eight nights, the facility must be cleaned and prepped by a team of Knights. Floors must be swept, oven cleaned, freezers moved, supplies ordered, deliveries made, menus and signs ordered, and teams formed under 13 captains. The Knights-only practice Fry is utilized as a dry run teaching night for the new volunteer workers on Febraury 18th. Here are some of the unseen heroes who make it all magically come together.

First Three Fish Fry Events Soar!!

8

Our first three Fish Fry events were extremely well-attended and put us into record territory. We are already 132 meals ahead of last year’s record pace. We thank all volunteers and note that we need more help as we ramp up the meals into Lent.

Another Great Fish Fry Crowd

“The Passion of the Christ” April 9th On Palm Sunday, April 9th, the Mel Gibson movie “The Passion of the Christ” will be shown in McGivney Hall at 2 PM. The movie is intense and geared to adults only. Our thanks to Youth Chairman Bryan Kler who coordinates the movies in McGivney Hall. This is a wonderful preparation for Easter.

It didn’t take very long to get our Fish Fry crowds back up to over 1,000 meals. After the Knight Practice Fry and the Ash Wednesday Fry, our third event hit the 1,145 meal mark with ease. Since our meal totals constantly increase (barring bad weather) throughout Lent, this bodes well for a grand total of over 9,000 meals this Lent. We will need more volunteers to make this possible.

Our 4 Supported Seminarians

Nicholas Le is studying at Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Il. Jack Knight is studying at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, FL. Bro. John Klein is studying in Rome, IT. and is a year from becoming a priest. He writes us frequently. Paul Nacey is studying in Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, LA. Our newest seminarian has just written

to us with this nice message: “Thank you and all the knights for the prayers and support you provide me. Your generosity and prayers make this time of preparation for the priesthood that much easier. The picture you requested is below. A little bit about my studies. I am studying at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana, no affiliation with the Notre Dame. I am in my third year of seminary but in my first year of studying theology. This means that, God willing, I will be ordained a deacon in 3 years and a priest in 4 years. Again, give my thanks to all the knights and know of my prayers for you and the entire Archdiocese.”

Be proud that our Council is helping these fine young men become priests in our archdiocese. 12

Hononary Memberships Awarded

Three of our council brothers have been members of the Order for over 25 years without an interruption. That gives them special status within the Order and a special permanent plastic membership card with elimination or reduction in annual dues as such: Michael J. Schultz has attained age 65 and been a member for 25 consecutive years. He has

earned Honorary Membership and a special honorary KofC pin. His dues are now $10/year. Raymond C. Eberly has attained age 70 and been a member for 25 years without interruption.

He has earned a gold Honorary Life Membership card and a special KofC pin and will never again pay dues.

Jerome J. Bisig has attained age 70 and been a member for 25 years without interruption. He has earned a gold Honorary Life Membership card and a special KofC pin and will never

again pay dues. Our member priests are Honorary Life members and likewise pay no dues. We also excuse deacons from paying dues as a council courtesy. 13

Spaghetti will be the meal of choice at the Troop 434 Boy Scout of America Court of Honor on Monday evening March 27th. Council 11402 will donate the labor and the main ingredients of the meal to about fifty people who will partake in the Honors Dinner at 6:30 that evening. This is the second such event that the council has sponsored. The Court of Honor is held about four times per year. Brother Bruce Malinoff requested the aid of the brothers and Community Chairman Mike Feeney will work out the details and arrange a staff to cook the meal in the parish social hall. Future dates will be August 14th and December 11th. The Knights always help out our Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop when asked.

Vietnam Moving Wall Arriving

Our Fr. Charles J. Watters 4th Degree Assembly 2688 is in the process of erecting a “Battlecross” Monument in the the Johns Creek Newtown Park to commemorate our fallen warriors. The base of the battlecross monument will have a plaque already prepared by the Assembly. We hope to have this monument installed by the time the Vietnam Moving Wall arrives at the park on March 30th—Apr. 2. Our cross will be placed at the entrance of the park at 3150 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, GA 30022. This military park is the fourth largest in the country and is well worth a visit. The Assembly has already installed a bench in honor of Fr. Charles J. Watters who is a fallen Congressional Medal of Honor Winner from the Vietnam War. Our council has an amazing 157 Sir Knights. Our Sir Knight Bill Camden is the Faithful Navigator of the Assembly and is coordinating the installation of the battlecross monument. Our sister St. Brigid Council 10633 is hosting a Saturday April 1st ceremony at the Vietnam Wall and a tour of the park, plus wreath laying, flag raising, reveille and taps, an special POW/MIA events. This month you will be seeing sights like this on the weekend of March 18/19 as we hold our 2017 Spring Membership Drive. We need volunteers to man the church doors at all weekend Masses to hand out brochures about our

Order and answer questions. Then on Tuesday March 21st, we will hold an Open House in McGivney Hall to host interested men and their wives and hopefully sign up a few. We now stand at 24 signees out of the needed 35 by June 30th for Star Council Award consideration. This drive will be very crucial.

19

Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) Success

The number of participants in this year’s men CRHP was quite good. Close examination of the photo will impress you with the amazing number of All Saints Knights in it. A few of the brothers were even from nearby councils as well. Every knight should attend a CRHP weekend eventually.

Membership Drive—March 18/19

How to Pay 2017 Dues Electronically!

Shown above is the new electronic payment page on our council kc11402.org web site. You go to that web site, choose “Members Enter Here”, log in with your last name and membership number (on your member card), choose “2017 Dues Payment”, and then get to above screen. You may then pay your dues online for $41.50 (which includes a $1.50 electronic processing fee) by using a credit card or your PayPal account which takes that amount directly out of your checking account like a debit card. Your personal PayPal account must be set up independently. A new second web page choice allows you to set up automatic $41.50 PayPal payments for 5 years. Of course, you may still pay your normal 2017 annual dues of $40 directly at a meeting or send a $40 check made out to “KofC Council 11402” to our Financial Secretary, Ralph O’Connor, at 390 17th St., NW, Unit 5069, Atlanta, GA 30363. His email is [email protected]. If a member is less than 26 years old on December 31, 2016, annual dues are only $20. If you are a designated “Honorary” member (65 years old and a Knight for 25 consecutive years), your dues are only $10. Priests, deacons, or members of a religious order pay no dues. Anyone who has been a Knight for 50 unbroken years likewise pays no dues. These above rules are for Council 11402 dues only. Assembly dues are separate. We could not make it easier to pay your dues. Dues are assessed each January 1st. 21
