Tony Beaudette, our Past GrandKnight and District Deputy, is be-ing honored with the ColumbianBooster Award for the many ac-complishments for our Council and

for the K of C as a whole. Theaward dinner is being held onThursday, March 31st, at the Wel-lington.The Council is subsidizing a portionof the cost for the dinner for thosethat wish to attend. Lenten Fish Fries

For the third year, Holy Rosary Councilwill be hosting Fish Fries on Fridaysfrom March 11th until April 15th. TheFish Fry will not be held on Good Fri-day. As in the past, the doors will openat 5:30 P.M., and food will be serveduntil around 7:30-8:00 P.M. The dinnerincludes fish, fries, slaw and cornbread.

Cost:Adults $10.00 for Cod

$11.00 for HaddockChildren $5.00 for children 6-12

Free for children 5 andunderCash bar

There are a couple of important datechanges in the next couple months.

The March Officers Meeting will beheld on Wednesday, March 30th somembers can attend Tony Beaudette’sAward Dinner. Also, the April SocialMeeting will held one week earlier onApril 14th to avoid conflicting withHoly Thursday.

There are many exciting events hap-pening in the coming months. The offi-cers hope that you will take advantageof these events and where possible do-nate your time.

The 2011 Spring Dinner Dance will beheld on May 6th. Mark your calendarsand plan to be there to help out. Youwon't believe the fun and enjoymentyou'll have by working at a Clearbrookevent. Ask some of those who volunteerregularly. They'll tell you that they don'tvolunteer just because they get to eatsome of Lance's better meals; they helpout because of the warm feeling thatthey get by brightening the lives of someof the finest and friendliest peoplearound.

Page 32011 Free Throw Shoot Out

Twenty-two 6th thru 8th grade students representing twelvearea junior high and middle schools competed in the 29thAnnual Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee held Saturday,February 12, 2011, at the hall.

The first place fin-isher was Jack Rai-mondi of St. EmilySchool in Mt. Pros-pect. The secondplace finisher wasDrew Morton ofThomas MiddleSchool in Arlington Heights, and the third place finisher wasMitchell Hasley, also of St. Emil School. The Bee used 171words and lasted for an exciting 18 rounds, including wordssuch as crepuscular, sentient, cumulonimbus, and leviathan. The Beeconcluded when Jack Raimondi spelled both noncommittal andpyrite correctly to claim first place.

All three finalists have qualified to compete in the RegionalSpelling Bee in March, where the top three finishers of theRegional Bee will qualify for the state tournament that will beheld in Champaign in April.

The students participating in the Spelling Bee and theirschools were:

The Bee was hosted by Holy Rosary Council, and co-sponsored with Mt. Prospect Council #6481 and Our Ladyof the Grove Council #13448. All the public and privatejunior high schools and middle schools serving ArlingtonHeights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights,Rolling Meadows and Wheeling were invited to send tworepresentatives to participate.

The Council's competition,which was held on January28th, attracted 45 contestants,and their supporters, fromArlington Heights, Munde-lein, Glenview, Deer Park,Prospect Heights, Wheeling,Palatine, Buffalo Grove andRolling Meadows. We hadwinners in each of the 10 Di-visions, along with 4 doorprize winners. The freethrow winners were:

Boys10—Ian Ziegenhorn11—Luke Koehler

12—Kyle Kornblum13—Chandler Forgue14—Nicholas Statkiewicz

Door prizes were graciouslyprovided by the SchaumburgFlyers and Lake County Field-ers baseball teams, the Chi-cago Wolves hockey team andthe Elite Soccer training or-ganization. In addition, wereceived photo posters ofDerrick Rose from theChicago Bulls and food giftcards from Valli Produce,Mariano's Fresh Market andthe Northpoint Jewel-Osco,for our complimentary re-freshment and snack tables.Please patronize these organi-zations that contributed toour tournament.

We'd like to thank all the vol-

unteers that helped at theevent, especially Bob Kosciel-niak who, in addition to beingdrafted as Co-chairman andmanning a registration table,helped with planning, recruit-ing and publicizing the event;to Brian Marier, who was incharge of the refreshment andsnack tables; to Ladies Auxil-iary Member, Rosemary Ver-miglio, who helped preparethe food and monitor therefreshment center; to LauraWardle, who designed thewinning entries in our An-nouncement Flier Contest:and, lastly, to Brian Allenwho's flier entry was also usedto publicize the competition.

One reason for the lowerthan expected turn out at thetournament was our late start

in planning and organizingthe event. This year, insteadof beginning the process inNovember for the 2012 com-petition, we are going to startin June. If any brother Knightor Sister Auxiliary Member isinterested in becoming amember of the 2012 FreeThrow Championship Team,you can sign up by e-mailingto the Council tournament'saddress,[email protected],with your volunteer prefer-ence. We are in need of 5volunteers for planning andsite acquisition, 5 for publicityand donations, 10 for recruit-ing, 5 for the refreshmenttables and 25 volunteers atthe Gymnasium. Please helpout if you are able.

Knights and their familieswill be meeting at theKnights of Columbus Hallon Saturday, March 5th 2011to car pool to the mission.

We will depart at 7:30 A.M.and return at 1:00 P.M. Vol-unteers will unload a semi-truck load of food and pack-ages for needy families.

The packaged items will thenbe distributed to 250-300families that morning.

There is a lot going on inMarch. We have a First De-gree ceremony at the begin-ning of the Business Meetingon March 3rd. Please letJohn Morrow know if youhave any prospective candi-dates that should be con-tacted. Please note also thatthe start time for the BusinessMeetings has been moved upto 7:30 P.M. starting inMarch.

Our Lenten Fish Fries will bestarting on Friday, March11th, and will run through taxday on April 15th. Pleasecome out and enjoy a greatmeal with the family. If youhave the time, please consider

volunteering to help out atone or more of the Fish Fries.Contact John Helminski formore information.

The St. Patrick’s Day ReverseRaffle is a new event for theCouncil that should be funand a good fundraiser. Theprizes include $2,500, a 50”HDTV and an iPad. Hope-fully you can join us, but evenif you can’t, you can purchaseindividual raffle tickets for$30. Only 200 tickets will besold, so hurry up and reserveyours now before they’re allgone.

March Madness begins onMarch 17th, which is also St.Patrick’s Day and the night ofour Social Meeting. Come on

out and bring a friend for anight of college basketballand fellowship.

Another new event for theCouncil is the TupperwareParty and Bingo Event onMarch 24th. Everyone usesTupperware, so this isn’t justan event for the ladies. Wereceive a percentage of theTupperware sales for the eve-ning, and we’ll be donatingthat money to the schoolsand religious education pro-grams of the parishes that weserver.

Our annual Chicago Wolvesouting is on Sunday, March27th. Please get your reserva-tions in to Angie Cozzarelliby March 10th.

Finally, Tony Beaudette isbeing honored with the Co-lumbian Booster Award onMarch 31st. This is a greathonor for Tony, and we hopeyou will join us in honoringhim that night at the Welling-ton.

As I said at the beginning,there’s a lot going on. Hope-fully one or two or more ofthese events are appealing toyou, and we’ll see you aroundthe Council.
