When I saw the orange and yellow at the yarn store, I didn’t know what they would be, but I wanted them with the same craving as I have for M&Ms. The pattern just sort of developed on its own as I went along. I wanted a kids’ mitten that would work for both boys and girls, and ended up with a design that works for  just abo ut anyon e. Imagine it in grays for a man, blue and yellow for a littl e boy, o r whatever color would match your own winter coat! They don’t take much yarn. When working the striped thumb gusset, the yarn not in use will form long floats at the back of thework. These floats should be caught or woven every few stitches. More information aboutmanaging floats in stranded knitting can be found here.

PATTERN

LEFT MITTENUsing MC, CO 32[40, 48] sts. Divide sts between needles, placing 16[20, 24] sts on first needle(Needle 1) and 8[10, 12] sts each on the remaining 2 needles (Needles 2 and 3). Join to beginworking in the round, be ing careful not to twist.

Round 1: [K1 using MC, k1 using CC] to end.Round 2: [K1 using MC, p1 using CC ] to end.Repeat Round 2 until work measures 1.5[2, 2.5] inches.

Next Round: Using MC, k1, m1, k16[20, 24], m1, k to end. 34[42, 50] sts.

Set Up Patterns for Hand:Next Round: Work sts on Needle 1 following Matrix C hart; work sts on Needles 2 and 3 followingPalm Chart. Pattern repeat for Matrix Chart will be worked 3[4, 5] times, pattern repeat for PalmChart will be worked 7[9, 11] times.

Thumb Gusset:Round 1: Work in patternto end of round, work Row1 of Gusset Chart. Newlymade st is at the end of Needle 3.

Continue in pattern,working Gusset Chart atend of Needle 3, until youhave completed Round10[14, 16] of GussetChart. 43[55, 65] sts;

9[13, 15] sts in Gusset.

Next Round: Work inpattern to beginning of Gusset; place 9[13, 15] stsof Gusset on st holder orwaste yarn, CO 1 st usingMC onto Needle 1 usingBackward Loop method.35[43, 51] sts.

Work 1 round in pattern.Next Round: K2tog, workin pattern to end. 34[42,50] sts.

Continue in pattern untilwork measures approx. 1.5[1.75, 2] inches less than desired length.

Decrease Round: K1, k2tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts on Needle 1, ssk, k1; k1, k2tog, work inpattern to last 3 sts on Needle 3, ssk, k1.Work 1 round in pattern.Repeat these 2 rounds 3[4, 5] times more. 18[22, 26] sts. Break CC.

Last Round: Using MC, k all sts.Graft sts on Needle 1 to sts on Needles 2 and 3.

Thumb:Replace held sts of gusset on 2 needles. Using a third needle and CC , pick up and k 3 sts in COedge between gusset and hand; k gusset sts using CC . 12[16, 18] sts.

Work in stripe pattern as established until work measures 0.5[0.75, 0.75] inch less than desiredlength.

Size Adult L Only:Next Round: [K7, k2tog] twice. 16 sts.

All Sizes:

In the set of rows that follow, begin on Round 3 for C hild, Round 1 for Adult M or L.Round 1: [K2, k2tog] 4 times. 12 sts.Round 2: K all sts.Round 3: [K1, k2tog] 4 times. 8 sts.Round 4: K all sts.Round 5: [K2tog] 4 times.Break yarn, draw through remaining 4 sts and pull tight.
