  • Sept. 29 & 30 Field Trip: Children Under Stress This tour, focusing on efforts to detect children at risk, will include visits to Juvenile Court, St. Joseph Carondelet Child Center, and Children’s Memorial Hospital. During lunch at Ann Sather’s restaurant, Leon Intrater, Director of Neon Center (a drop-in center for homeless children) discusses the problems of young runaways in Chicago. In addition, several of these young people speak about their experiences.

    Oct. 6 & 7 Field Trip: The Indochinese Experience in Chicago This tour, which will introduce subscribers to members of several Southeast Asian groups who are building new lives and communities in Chicago, begins at Truman College. An overview of the Indochinese refugees’ experience in Chicago and a visit to English classes for newcomers is also included at this stop. Visits to the Vietnamese Association of Illinois, the Cambodian Association of Illinois, a Vietnamese Buddhist Temple, and the Chinese Mutual Aid Association are also included. Tour includes lunch at a neighborhood Southeast Asian restaurant and a visit to Argyle Street, which is lined with Asian shops.

    Oct. 13 & 14 Field Trip: Living With the Lake This tour, which will explore various experimental and costly strategies to control erosion along the Lake Michigan shoreline, begins with a visit to Lake Forest City Hall to learn of their model shoreline protection project. A visit to this model project to study its effectiveness follows. A visit to the Illinois Beach State Park in Zion will include a hayride tour of the park, a stop at the park’s North Point Marina and a lunch at the park lodge. A film on the Des Plaines River Wetlands Demonstration Project and a visit to the project site in Wadsworth conclude this tour.

    Oct. 27 & 28 Field Trip: Beyond Impressionism A tour offering a fresh look at a thought-provoking subject—contemporary art. Visits included in this tour are the Museum of Contemporary Art, two private collections of modern art, and the collections of John Nuveen and Company. A stop at Lill Street Gallery to view jewelry and works in glass and clay and a visit to the studios of Richard Hunt, an award-winning sculptor, are also included in this tour. The landmark Como Inn provides the setting for lunch.

    Nov. 10 & 11 Field Trip: In Service in Chicago A tour to acquaint subscribers with the Salvation Army, this tour goes beyond the Christmas concerts on street corners and tagging on Doughnut Day. A visit to the Officers’ Training Center includes a tour of dormitories, classrooms, the chapel, Booth Manor (which houses offices, a library and a museum), and lunch in the dining room of the Center. A tour of Salvation Army supported shelters and programs includes stops at the Emergency Lodge, the Tom Seay Center, and the Harbor Light Freedom Center.

    Sept. 27 & 28 Field Trip: A Sanitary Centennial This tour is a day-long, mostly water-borne celebration of the Metropolitan Sanitary District’s up-coming 100th Anniversary. While traveling on the Fort Dearborn, officials from the MSD will discuss the history and development of Chicago as seen from the Chicago River. After viewing the MSD’s Centenary Fountain, representatives from the Chicago Dock and Canal will explain the 60-acre Cityfront Center Development under construction. The boat will sail the South Branch of the Chicago River to the South-West Treatment Works at Stickney where buses will transport participants to MSD’s Mainstream Pumping Station at Hodgkin
