  • Embracing Fresh Thinking

Technology offers us the tools that

    accelerate the pace of change.

    managing Director Ben Keswick

One of the strongest messages to emerge from our first three Knowledge and Innovation Workshops, which were held in Singapore, Jakarta and Hong Kong, is that today’s business environment is changing and as a Group we too must undergo a process of change in order to drive growth.

We need to be able to respond to the social and economic evolution that is taking place in many parts of Asia and to the impact that technology is increasingly having on our lives. It is essential that the Group remains relevant to this new business world.

The resolve from all three workshops, and one that I am fully committed to, is that we can achieve new ways of working by embracing ‘Fresh Thinking’. For example, where we see customers becoming more vocal, empowered by social media, we have to understand their needs and concerns and use that in a positive way to meet, or exceed, their expectations.

In many areas, it is the new ideas and business models that disrupt, and not technology itself. Instead, technology offers us the tools that accelerate the pace of change. To optimize the benefits of technology, we must first focus on enhancing our capability and customer experience in existing areas of activity, and recognize that it can start with simple things.

Implementing Fresh Thinking in this fast-paced environment can also sometimes require a business to move out of its comfort zone. This may involve taking calculated risks and being prepared to make and learn from mistakes along the way. To support such action, we must promote a culture of innovation and, where necessary, allocate resources to allow for experimentation and a bold approach that will keep our businesses abreast of changing times.

In addressing the challenges ahead, I want to encourage all our businesses to apply Fresh Thinking, to identify and seize the opportunities for long-term growth and to be inspired and excited by our future prospects, as I am.

  • “William Jardine and James Matheson instilled their values into their new enterprise. These were a strong work ethic, an independent spirit, financial prudence, business foresight and adaptability, determination and understanding the value of long-term partnerships,” said Mr Keswick.

Mr Keswick told his audience that today the Group manages investments of some US$8 billion in mainland China.

“The focus of our businesses is to provide premium products and services to the high to middle income group in the country, a market segment which aligns with our aim to provide a better living quality and environment in China,” he said.

He also spoke of the Group’s excitement about the future of China, where by 2020 it is expected that a quarter of the population will have a per capita GDP of US$20,000.

    Enterprising Spirit Fosters Success

Jardine matheson Group Deputy managing Director Adam Keswick addressing young

    entrepreneurs at Hupan university.

The enterprising spirit shown by founders William Jardine and James Matheson, and nurtured by generations of partners and directors, many descendants of William Jardine himself, has contributed to the success of the Jardine Matheson Group for more than 180 years.

This was one of the key messages from Group Deputy Managing Director Adam Keswick when he addressed an audience of young entrepreneurs at Hupan University in Hangzhou about the perspective of a ‘multi-generational family business’. Mr Keswick was invited to speak to the first batch of students to attend the university, which aims to develop a new generation of mainland China entrepreneurs, by co-founder and first president, Chairman of the Alibaba Group, Jack Ma.

“In other words, there will be a market inside China that is equal to the size of the US market,” he continued.

Mr Keswick said that over the years, family involvement had helped to foster a fruitful balance between conservatism and entrepreneurship that encouraged risk-taking, but imposed some controls that might otherwise not be in place. This balance was essential to protect the long-term health of the Group.

“Our family’s involvement today is as strong as it has ever been. As each generation takes the reins I hope they bring ‘Fresh Thinking’ and set new goals, supported by the wisdom of the past generation,” he concluded.

  • The Jardine Matheson Group’s Interim Results Announcement noted that Group companies were trading well and taking advantage of the opportunities made available by their strong finances and market-leading positions. This was in spite of the more challenging conditions experienced in the first half of 2015. The Group’s underlying profit for the first half of 2015 was US$667 million, down 10%. Revenue, including 100% of the revenue from associates and joint ventures, was US$31.5 billion, compared to US$30.8 billion in the first half of 2014.

Astra continued to face slowing economic growth in Indonesia with reduced rupiah earnings further impacted on consolidation by a weaker exchange rate. Its automotive operations were particularly affected. Hongkong Land’s commercial portfolio produced another strong contribution, while in the residential sector the group achieved improved results in mainland China. Jardine Motors saw earnings decline following a record year in Hong Kong in 2014, which had benefited from new models. Jardine Lloyd Thompson’s profits for the period were held back by its investment in its new US specialty business, which has begun well. Dairy Farm saw modest like-for-like sales growth in most of its major markets but underlying

profit was lower. Mandarin Oriental, which also saw earnings decline, raised US$316 million in April through a rights issue, and part of the proceeds were used to finance the acquisition of a 50% interest in the Hotel Ritz, Madrid. Also in April, Jardine Cycle & Carriage acquired a 24.9% interest in Siam City Cement, Thailand’s second largest cement manufacturer, which it subsequently financed through a US$750 million rights issue. Jardine Pacific achieved an increase in earnings primarily due to a stronger performance from Gammon. Jardine Schindler is also performing well.

Addressing senior management in Singapore, Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director Ben Keswick said that while there had been some good individual performances, most companies were still having to work hard to maintain their positions in these challenging times.

“Yes, in some cases, we need to control costs, but we must also continue to invest in our businesses and to grow market share… We must make best use of this time to leverage our solid foundation, so we can emerge stronger than our competitors,” added Mr Keswick.

  • Lord Sassoon Shakes Hands on EU-China RelationshipIn his role as President of the EU-China Business Association, Jardine Matheson Group Director Lord Sassoon attended the tenth EU-China Business Summit in Brussels. Lord Sassoon is also Chairman of the China-Britain Business Council.

The event provided an opportunity for business and political leaders from Europe and China, including Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, to meet to discuss the current commercial environment and issues of common concern in the EU-China trade relationship. Among the topics discussed were investment co-operation, the digital economy and green and sustainable growth.

In a speech made during the Summit, Lord Sassoon highlighted the opportunities for EU companies to do business with China and said that the EU welcomed Chinese investment in areas such as infrastructure, education and financial services.

Driving MINDSET MomentumA review of Jardine Matheson Group charity MINDSET, which was set up in 2002 with the aim of making a difference in the area of mental health, has recommended streamlining its structure to encourage more direct involvement by Group companies and Jardine Ambassadors (JAs), in particular.

“We wish to ensure that MINDSET’s spirit of vitality, enjoyment and energetic engagement grow across the community and within the Group,” explained Managing Director and MINDSET Chairman Ben Keswick. “There will be more promotion within Group companies about MINDSET and the importance of mental health, with stepped up efforts by the JAs in their respective units.”

Mr Keswick said that in the 13 years since MINDSET was set up, it had achieved a great deal. The Health in Mind school programme had raised the awareness of students about their own mental wellbeing, and over 390 JAs had contributed to the community. MINDSET’s Job Training Programme had provided some 1,000 positions across the Group and helped those recovering from mental illness to find employment in the community. In addition, MINDSET had financed many other mental health projects.

Mr Keswick said that there was an increasing need to use the Group’s enthusiasm and passion to drive the momentum of MINDSET. “I hope that through MINDSET everyone within the Group will develop a greater sense of awareness about their own mental health and that of the people around them,” he concluded.

  • PIP Awards 2016 Seek Technology TransformationJardine Matheson Group businesses that have put technology to brilliant use are being given the chance to share their results across the Group with the debut of a ‘Technology Transformation’ category in the 2016 Pride in Performance (PIP) Awards Programme. The new category will look at how a business or operating unit has understood and captured new sources of value as a result of putting a technological or digital solution into motion.

“The technology/digital arena covers a wide area, but if you have given it a go, let us know how by making use of such solutions, it has made a demonstrable difference to your business,” said Jardine Matheson Group Managing Director Ben Keswick.

As well as the emphasis on new technology, Group businesses can also showcase their area of excellence in any of the other four PIP Awards Programme categories – Customer Engagement, Marketing Excellence, Innovative Ideas, and Superior Growth. The deadline for entries is Tuesday, 12th January 2016.

Group Plays Key Role at Chongqing MeetingJardine Matheson Group Deputy Managing Director Adam Keswick played a key role at the tenth annual meeting of the Chongqing Mayor’s International Advisory Council (CMIA), hosting the first session to discuss this year’s theme, ‘Chongqing: One Belt One Road (OBOR) and the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB)’.

In a paper submitted for the session, Mr Keswick said that Chongqing is the perfect node for the integration of the two strategies, which have arisen from the Chinese government’s vision of building land and maritime ‘Silk Roads’ connecting Asia, Europe and Africa, with the development of logistics and communication linkages to support trade, investment, monetary flows, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

Mr Keswick said that OBOR and YREB posed both opportunities and challenges for Chongqing, but should enable the city to enhance its international economic and commercial status aided by the municipality’s existing and potential positioning in the Chinese and global economies. He also made several recommendations including the need to raise awareness among international businesses of the strong foundation the Chongqing-Europe railway and other infrastructure linkages provide for Chongqing to develop as a key hub between OBOR and YREB.

“By integrating OBOR and YREB strategies into its future development, Chongqing can work with international businesses, and provide opportunities for them to grow alongside their partners in China,” concluded Mr Keswick.

During the CMIA meeting, the Jardine Matheson Group was nominated by the Mayor of Chongqing, Huang Qifan, to become the Council’s Rotating Executive Chairman for the next two years.

  • Workshops Inspire Fresh Thinking Across the Group

  • Through our workshops we wanted to demystify disruptive technology

and, rather than think of it as a threat, explore how

we can use it as an opportunity.

    Ben Keswick

A decade ago, social media was practically unknown. Today almost one billion people have Facebook accounts and Tencent has 800 million accounts in China alone, while technologies such as the mobile internet are allowing millions of people in remote areas of developing regions to leapfrog into the 21st-century global economy. The impact of new technologies means that business is changing fundamentally, and the pace of change is accelerating.

Three ‘Knowledge and Innovation’ workshops, held in Singapore, Jakarta and Hong Kong, have highlighted the need for ‘Fresh Thinking’ and provoked initiatives and opportunities that will enable the Jardine Matheson Group to participate in the technological advances that are changing today’s business environment.

Initiated by Group Managing Director Ben Keswick to boost the momentum of Fresh Thinking across Group businesses, the workshops brought together 150 leaders from its different operating companies to explore five technology themes that are disrupting businesses globally and in Asia. These are Digital, Social and Mobile, Internet of Things, 3D Printing, Cloud Computing Technology and Big Data/Advanced Analytics. In each workshop, industry experts together with representatives from regional companies that have embarked on their own digital journeys shared their expertise and experiences.

“The power of new technologies is everywhere. They change how businesses make money and how we live and work, sometimes with amazing speed,”

said Mr Keswick. “Their transformative power can create immense value, but often through a highly disruptive process. Through our workshops we wanted to demystify disruptive technology and, rather than think of it as a threat, explore how we can use it as an opportunity.”

The workshops were themselves innovative, making use of technology to ensure a fully interactive and immersive experience. As well as key learning objectives, they included an ‘experience lounge’ where participants could view, touch and feel technology innovations; a ‘Hackathon’, which demonstrated how new technology can disrupt traditional business models much faster than before; and a facilitated ‘gallery walk’ which focused on demystifying the five main technology themes.

Building upon these workshops, a series of Knowledge and Innovation Forums are being lined up for 2016 that will focus on areas of particular interest to Group businesses. Special Interest groups are also being set up to create a collaborative environment across the Group and bring ideas to life.

“Over the next few years we shall see great shifts in the way we operate. The application of Fresh Thinking is essential to our businesses, and I am pleased to see that centres of excellence are already up and running in a number of our operations,” said Mr Keswick. “Our goal must be to embrace this new technology and make it work for our long-term benefit.”

  • Making the Most of Disruptive Technologies

Digital, Social and MobileIn the United States, some 30% of web browsing and 40% of social media use is on mobile devices; in China, wireless mobile internet use already exceeds wired PC-based use. In only a few years, internet-enabled portable devices have become a way of life for the more than one billion people who now own smartphones and tablets. The technology of the mobile internet is evolving rapidly, with intuitive interfaces and new formats, including wearable devices. The mobile internet also has applications across businesses, enabling more efficient delivery of products and services and creating opportunities to increase workforce productivity.

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group (MOHG) has embraced modern social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as Weibo and WeChat in China, to engage with its guests. It also uses a cutting edge system called ‘Brand Karma’ to manage customer satisfaction on platforms such as TripAdvisor. With over half of web traffic now on mobile, MOHG’s sites are optimized for smartphones and tablets.

mandarin oriental was an early adopter of the worldwide web and social media.

7-Eleven Hong Kong’s mobile app, ‘7-Fans’, allows consumers to enjoy the convenience of e-mobile payments, while at the same time earning and redeeming electronic coupons. It has also launched ‘Tap & Go’, a secure service where customers can make payments at 7-Eleven through near-field communication (NFC)-enabled mobile phones.

JLT Sport has developed an app for the Australian Football League (AFL) that allows clubs to complete a pre-game risk management checklist of their grounds and facilities via smartphones or tablet devices, enabling officials to identify safety concerns. The stored information on a central server provides both JLT and the AFL with the ability to analyze the data.

Astra associate PermataBank has been a pacesetter in mobile payment solutions in Indonesia with the development two years ago of ‘BBM Money’. This platform connects to a BlackBerry Messenger app that facilitates e-commerce, bill payments, mobile credit top-ups, and money transfers between BBM Money users or to any bank account across Indonesia.

    Perspective

  • Internet of ThingsIncreasingly, the connected world includes physical objects – such as machinery, shipments, infrastructure and devices – that are equipped with networked sensors and actuators that enable them to monitor their environment, report their status, receive instructions, and even take action based on the information they receive. Even people can be equipped with sensor-enabled devices – to track their health status, for example. This is the ‘Internet of Things’, and it is growing rapidly.

Hactl has enhanced the temperature-controlled zones in its SuperTerminal 1 facility and is using temperature mapping and 24-hour monitoring to accommodate pharmaceutical products.

More than nine billion devices are currently connected to the internet, including computers and smartphones, and that number is expected to increase dramatically within the next decade. When physical assets equipped with sensors provide information to a system that has the ability to capture, communicate and process the data – and even, in a sense, to collaborate – they create game-changing opportunities for production efficiency, distribution and innovation.

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited’s (Hactl) fast-track ‘Golden Route’ ensures that all pharmaceutical cargo achieves the speediest possible transit between the apron and handling centre with sensors enabling Hactl to monitor movement as well as the temperature conditions during both the transit and storage in dedicated cooler and freezer facilities.

Hongkong Land took advantage of the Internet of Things with its Centralised Monitoring Centre (CMC), which connects the existing Building Management Systems located within each property in its CENTRAL portfolio, onto a single platform. The CMC connects over 80,000 monitoring points, integrating the lift monitoring, automatic fire alarm, building management and CCTV systems of each building into a single network infrastructure, thereby increasing the efficiency of building controls and online monitoring, and enhancing customer satisfaction.

As a mining and earth moving contractor using some of the world’s largest and heaviest vehicles, Astra subsidiary PT Pamapersada Nusantara is applying a Vehicle Health Management System (VHMS) using wireless technology to monitor the condition of its fleet. The auto download capability of the VHMS provides data on the condition of vehicles and acts as an early warning system for any machinery defects.

3D Printing3D printing enables an idea to go directly from a design file to a finished product, potentially skipping many traditional manufacturing steps. Until recently, the process was largely used for a few select manufacturing applications, but the improving performance of manufacturing machinery, an expanding range of materials and lower prices are bringing 3D printing to a much wider audience of consumers. 3D printing allows on-demand production, which has significant benefits for supply chains and can also reduce the amount of material wasted in manufacturing. It can create objects that are difficult or impossible to produce with traditional techniques, and scientists have even ‘bioprinted’ organs, using an inkjet printing technique to layer human stem cells along with supporting scaffolding.

Gammon leads the way in the construction industry in Hong Kong with its application of 3D printing and scanning. Using 3D printing, Gammon can create a prototype of a complex building structure and ultimately reduce reworks and delays. Areas difficult to access such as tunnels can be easily surveyed and the resulting scanned visuals used to create 3D maps and models. 3D printing is also playing a key role in Gammon’s move into mechanized construction.

Hongkong Land is pursuing the future use of 3D software technology throughout the lifecycle of its residential developments, from 3D visualization in the design development process to a virtual reality experience for potential buyers during the marketing phase. Even after a development is completed, the generated 3D files could serve as a key asset in facilitating the estate management system.

In-house 3D printing technology is playing a key role in Gammon’s drive into automated construction and modularization.

  • Our goal must be to embrace this new

technology and make it work for our

    long-term benefit.

    Ben Keswick

Cloud Computing TechnologyWith Cloud technology, any computer application or service can be delivered over a network or the internet, with minimal or no local software or processing power required. IT resources such as computation and storage are made available on an ‘as-needed’ basis, and when extra capacity is required, it is seamlessly added without entailing up-front investment in new hardware or programming. The Cloud is enabling the explosive growth of internet-based services, from search to streaming media to offline storage of personal data, as well as the background processing capabilities that support mobile internet devices. The Cloud can improve the economics of IT for businesses and provide greater flexibility and responsiveness. It can also enable entirely new business models, including all kinds of pay-as-you-go services.

MOHG has already embraced Microsoft Cloud to handle its global email system, with significant advantages in cost, security, storage and maintenance. It will soon move to hosting its intranet on Cloud creating benefits that will include using workgroups for internal communications to encourage collaboration, enhance transparency and foster creativity.

By storing and accessing data via the Cloud, JEC is improving the efficiency and reliability of its project management operations across its regional offices and Hong Kong headquarters. Cloud-based ‘Office 365’ is also supporting the development of the recent joint venture, Cummins Jardine Energy Solution, in terms of document merging, increasing productivity and simplifying team collaboration.

    Perspective

  • It is investment in innovation, both in our existing operations and in new activities, that will see us gaining market-

    leading positions.

    Ben Keswick

Big Data/Advanced AnalyticsAs companies and organizations interact with individuals via social media sites, smartphones, computers and other consumer devices, they generate digital ‘exhaust’ – that is data created as a by-product of other activities. In a digitized world, consumers communicating, browsing, buying, sharing and searching create their own enormous trails of data. The use of all this ‘Big Data’ is creating new growth opportunities and entirely new categories of companies. Many of these are businesses that sit in the middle of large information flows where data about products and services, buyers and suppliers, and consumer preferences and intent can be captured and analyzed. The effective use of Big Data is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage for individual firms in their interface with consumers buying a wide range of products and services, and for those that enable global supply chains, process millions of transactions or provide platforms for consumers’ digital experiences.

Mandarin Oriental uses Big Data to analyze guest preferences, key market segments, trends and sales opportunities. The creation of a global guest database has enabled it to enhance personalized service no matter which hotel guests choose.

Astra Customer Relationship Management unit AstraWorld analyzes customer data to assess customer needs and behaviour patterns, provide recommendations to help business units in the development of products and services, and enhance the customer experience through various channels including Astra call centres, SMS messaging and the internet. AstraWorld is also developing data analytics to help investigate customer activity across the Astra group’s business units, with the goal of measuring the value given to a customer and its contribution to Astra’s bottom line.

E-direct marketing is playing an increasingly important role in engaging Zung Fu’s customers by communicating new products and services, special promotions and event information. Zung Fu uses data-mining to ensure that the right messages are getting through to customers.

Our Way ForwardOne key theme coming out of the Knowledge and Innovation Workshops was the need to create a ‘culture of innovation’ and to allocate sufficient resources in the pursuit of new ideas.

“Under the challenging conditions in which many of our business units currently operate, it is compelling to focus, almost exclusively, on delivering our budgeted targets. However, this is precisely the time that we need to be investing in the innovation of our operations and harnessing available technologies in order to lay a solid foundation for long-term growth,” said Ben Keswick.

“Ultimately, it is this investment in innovation, both in our existing operations to make them smarter and more effective and in new activities, that will see us gaining market-leading positions when the upturn in trading conditions arrives.”

Zung Fu’s e-direct marketing plays an important role in customer engagement and in monitoring customer preferences.

PT Astra Daihatsu Motor in Top Gear with Major Milestone

PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) has achieved a major milestone with the production of four million units since it first began manufacturing in Indonesia in 1978.

ADM is the sole agent for Daihatsu cars in Indonesia and Daihatsu’s biggest overseas investment and production base outside Japan. It has vehicle assembly facilities in Sunter and East Karawang with a total production capacity of 530,000 units per year, as well as an engine factory in West Karawang.

ADM produces both Daihatsu and Toyota brands for the domestic and export markets with customers in 48 countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, including Gran Max exports to Japan, a country which is known for its strict quality control.

“This proves that ADM product quality is meeting stringent global standards,” said ADM Director of Manufacturing Pongky Prabowo. “Our integrated facilities apply the concept of SSC (Simple, Slim & Compact) and are able to

perform all vehicle production processes including stamping, welding, painting and assembly.”

Speaking at the ceremony to mark the four million units milestone, Indonesian Minister of Industry Saleh Husin congratulated ADM and said that he hoped that it would continue to contribute to the development of the automotive industry in the country, especially in the areas of global quality and environmentally-friendly standards and in its use of local components, which on average has reached 86% involving more than 792,000 employees.

This was reiterated by ADM President Sudirman MR who praised the support and commitment from all parties, including suppliers, dealers and partners, and vowed to continue the process of technology transfer.

“This will help to develop Indonesian people who have the ability to design products to global automotive standards,” he said.

A further investment by Dairy Farm in leading mainland China hypermarket and supermarket operator Yonghui involving the nation’s largest online retailer by transaction volume, JD.com, will accelerate Yonghui’s entry into e-commerce, a consumer space that has seen explosive growth in China over the last five years.

Dairy Farm is to invest RMB1.29 billion (US$210 million), as part of the raising of additional capital of RMB6.46 billion (US$1.05 billion) by Yonghui, putting it in a strong position to sustain its aggressive development plans and to invest further in building the strongest food supply chain in China. Dairy Farm’s interest will remain

at 19.99%, while JD.com will take a 10% interest in Yonghui.

“This is a pivotal moment for Yonghui as it reinforces its position as a leading hypermarket and supermarket retailer while widening its focus to include the surging e-commerce market in China,” said Dairy Farm Group Chief Executive Graham Allan.

“The partnership with JD.com brings with it significant opportunities for Yonghui and the prospect of a fully integrated online-to-offline offer for customers.”

Hong Kong has become one of the first cities in the world to establish Mercedes me, a new concept store for the brand which offers a combination of vehicle presentations, information and consultation, digital interaction, culinary experiences, and lifestyle events such as fashion shows and F1 race screenings.

The Hong Kong Mercedes me store is supported by a strong customer care team including a Product Concierge and Star Assistant, with the aim of delivering the ‘Best Customer Experience’ by going beyond the car as a product.

Located in Central, the grand opening of the store was attended by over 500 guests and media. A parade of seven iconic classic and futuristic Mercedes-Benz cars delivered the officiating guests to the event, which also showcased the unique Mercedes-Benz F 015 ‘Luxury in Motion’ research vehicle. This attracted much attention and ‘likes’ in social media as it made its way along Queen’s Road Central.

“Zung Fu is proud to partner with Mercedes-Benz in bringing this new concept to Hong Kong, and was delighted to be able to showcase the F 015 Luxury in Motion research vehicle,” said Zung Fu Chief Executive Michael Lee.

Following on from the ‘MINDSET Expression’ art project, which was initiated in 2014 to foster mental wellness and positive psychology for persons recovering from mental illness through different forms of art, Jardine Ambassadors (JAs) seized the opportunity to work with the four non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved and organized various art activities for the 2015 MINDSET Fun Day and Mini-MINDSET Days.

The MINDSET Fun Day took the form of art jamming with over 80 staff members from across the Group, 80 service users from the four NGOs – Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, Caritas Hong Kong, Castle Peak Hospital and New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association – and 50 JAs gathering together at Wu Kai Sha Youth Village to create a giant art piece. The end result was a spectacular view of Hong Kong’s urban skyline comprising 20 unique art pieces stretching to 20 metres embedding participants’ childhood memories as well as their love and perceptions of the city.

The Mini-MINDSET days also had art themes. JAs from JLT and JOS and their colleagues joined a Playback theatre workshop organized by Caritas Hong Kong, where a spontaneous performance was generated through unique collaboration between performers and audience. At a puppetry workshop, JAs and colleagues from Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and Jardine Schindler joined New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association’s members in storytelling using puppets created by the members themselves.

Over 130 student advocates from the ten schools participating in the 2015-17 Health in Mind (HIM) Programme attended an Orientation Camp at the Chinese YMCA – Wu Kai Sha Youth Village. Through various team building activities, the students became acquainted with one another as well as with the Jardine Ambassadors who will act as their mentors over the next two years. They also gained a greater understanding of the HIM Programme and their roles as mental health advocates.

The young Gammon engineers teamed up with local workers to replace the damaged roof of the school and managed to remove more than 5,000 tiles in one day.

Young Gammon Engineers Make a Difference in Sri LankaThirteen engineers from the Gammon Young Professional Group (YPG) have made a difference to a community on the east coast of Sri Lanka by replacing the roof of the local pre-school, which was badly damaged in the 2004 tsunami disaster.

Kinniya King Alfred Pre-School is both a school for children under six years old and a language centre for the town, which was one of the most devastated by the tsunami. As a result, classes were often suspended during the rainy seasons due to a fear of the roof collapsing and the danger from falling objects.

Using Gammon expertise, the YPG engineers undertook the planning, construction method design, on-site supervision and execution of the project. Working with local villagers, they also introduced Gammon’s stringent safety practices. They even improved the wellbeing of workers with daily Qi Gong exercises, following their successful introduction to the Gammon workforce last year.

  • Mannings Managers Find Inspiration in Guangzhou

Cycle & Carriage Road Trip to Malacca

Staff from Cycle & Carriage’s (C&C) Mitsubishi, Kia and Citroën Aftersales teams in Singapore enjoyed an ‘Amazing Race’-style road trip to Malacca as part of a team building exercise, which is held every three years. Forty-two cars were ‘flagged off’ at 7am from Pandan Gardens in Singapore to begin the 200 plus-kilometre journey. En route, there were game stops and questions to be answered with attractive prizes for the top five teams. These were presented at the annual C&C ‘Aftersales Service Awards Night’, which was held in conjunction with the team building event at the sky lounge of the Hatten Hotel, with its wonderful panoramic view of Malacca city.

More than 80 managers from Mannings & GNC in Hong Kong and Macau spent two days in Guangzhou visiting local stores with the objective of obtaining a better understanding of the latest retail trends there, while also encouraging a more customer-centric, innovative and people-focused mindset.

The managers looked at how online-to-offline formats help to drive businesses forward. Key factors learnt were that while online shopping platforms offer convenience to customers, offline stores in good locations can help answer queries from online shoppers who have doubts about the quality and trustworthiness of products.

“We found that online stores with a convenient network of small offline stores is a good model, with each complementing the other,” said Mannings Hong Kong & Macau Chief Executive Officer Helen Li.

The visitors also noted the increasing numbers and different formats of crossover and all-in-one hubs in Guangzhou where fashion meets home accessories, plus bookstore and coffee shop.
