STRESS - The Silent Killer

We probably sometimes respond saying, I'm fine. Afterall, I'm not physically drained. But have we considered Mental Stress? Mental stress is real and it's a ticking time bomb, it is a Silent Killer. It eats away first the body before it moves on to the mind. It is custom-made for everyone. It can suppress the immune system, upset the digestive and reproductive systems, increase the risk of heart attack/stroke, and speed up the aging process.

Case Study: Tunde is a 40-year-old young man working with a mulnaonal company, with a wife and three children. He seems to be living the good life. He is currently the Regional Manager in charge of sales. Life has never been beer. Unprecedently, at the beginning of the year, his target is increased three mes its number and his team do not seem to be hing their target. His wife starts complaining that he's spending excessively more me on the phone – though for his job – but she feels he doesn't have a work-life balance. The children are throwing tantrums and his wife keeps calling his aenon to this: it seems his whole life is falling apart. His colleagues planned to hang out one Friday night aer work, and he decided it was beer to follow them than to go home to his now “nagging wife”. At the club, he was introduced to a joint of cannabis and he felt good. When he woke up the next day, his troubles were sll there waing for him.

Like the popular saying, “when the going gets tough, the tough gets going”. But when the going is tough twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, all through the year, it becomes a serious problem for the whole body and the person concerned. The caution; 'You better take it easy' is commonly said and heard. Often, it's from one friend to another, a wife to her husband or vice versa, a clergyman imploring the hard-working individual to 'slow it down.

This Silent Killer emerges when Occupational Stress mingles with the normal, everyday mental stress. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines work-related stress as the body's response (mental and physical alike) to the presence of work demands and pressures that are not matched to the employee's previous knowledge or abilities and which challenges their ability to cope effectively. Stress can be made worse when employees feel they have little or no support from supervisors or colleagues with minimal control over work processes. While we think we are giving our all to get the job done at work, we may be actively digging our own graves.

Life is an endless cycle of stress, and normal stress levels are beneficial for adaptive survival mechanisms that are innate to man. However, abnormal stress levels are injurious to the person. Prolonged stress causes the body's Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) system to make severe adverse changes to the structure of the brain, affecting how it functions ultimately. We can do more by understanding the concepts surrounding mental stress by talking to mental health experts when we (or people around us) are faced by excessive mental exertion. Considering the Nigerian environment, we live and work in today, we cannot overemphasize paying attention to our mental health.

We often ignore or do not understand some of the symptoms of mental stress. The ability to know the difference makes a big difference. It includes; Fear, Nervousness, Excessive Worrying, Depression, Anger, Irritability, Guilt, Mood Swings, Loss Of Interest In Pleasurable Activities, Loneliness, Crying Spell, Loss Of Confidence, Restlessness, Chest Pain /Rapid Heartbeat, Muscular Tension In Neck, Backaches, Headaches, Insomnia, Fatigue, Loss Of Energy, Dry Mouth, Dizziness, Trembling, Frequent Urination/Defecation, Loss Of Appetite, Cramps, Ringing Ear, Loss Of Sexual Desire and/or ability, etc.

I like watching legal series, eating good food, reading and relaxing with my family.

I like to believe that I am a caring father and a responsible husband and in the words of many, “the person who smiles even when he is angry, a team player and good leader”.

I am currently the acting Regional Head, Ogun Region. My role entails the general supervision and management of commercial and technical operations of the entire business in the region. To kick-off my day, I usually read an inspirational book or message. Hard work and good family values is something that is synonymous with my lineage, it's in my DNA and I unconsciously operate to align with this. As a manager, getting people to be self-motivated and target driven is a major challenge I face constantly. I encounter more people who have degenerated values and this has affected their reasoning and good culture. However, I am guided by the principle of connectivity and believe that we are shaped by our genes, who we interact with, what we read, and how we interpret the world around us. With all these in mind, I make conscious efforts to balance my life's aspirations.

As employees, we should take advantage of the medical benefit which the company has made available to us when required.

Obtain a medical form from your respective Administrative Assistants or HRBP before visiting any hospital. Treatments/drugs and amount billed for each visit are usually entered on these forms and employees are to ensure they confirm these values are correct before they append their signatures on the forms.

According to the IBEDC Condition of Service Page 60 Section 6.5.2, all employees and their immediate legal dependents (which should not exceed a spouse and a maximum of four (4) people below the age of 18) are entitled to medical care.

Available is a variety of medical services which would help us maintain our physical and menta l wel l -being.

In cases of emergencies, employees can visit the hospitals first then pick up the medical forms afterwards.

Use the Company's retainer hospitals at all times, an exception would only be allowed when the staff is in a location where there are no IBEDC retainer hospitals. However, employees are advised to use government hospitals in such situations but can resort to private hospitals in areas where government hospitals are unavailable. Medical bills incurred are refunded upon presentation of receipts.

T h e f o l l o w i n g processes should be adhered to, in other to access the medicals.

List of IBEDC Retainer Hospitals can be accessed under Human Resource in IBEDC Shared folder, kindly contact your IT Support Officer or Human Resource Business Partner if you are unable to access this document.
