    NCA-9000: Glossary - Code Items

Containment System. An item whichforms a structure that encloses a nuclearpower system or that may be connected to other containment items and which isdesigned to provide a pressure containingbarrier for the primary purpose of containing, within leakage limits, or of channeling, for containment or forcontrolled disposal, radioactive or hazardous effluents released from thesystem.

Core Support Structures. Thosestructures or parts of structures which aredesigned to provide direct support or restraint of the core (fuel and blanketassemblies) within the reactor pressurevessel.

Appurtenance. An item intended to beattached to a completed and stampedcomponent which has work performed on it requiring verification by an Inspector.

Assembly. A grouping of Code itemsjoined by mechanical means, welding, or brazing.

Component. A vessel, concrete reactorvessel, concrete containment, pump, pressure relief valve, line valve, storagetank, piping system, or core supportstructure that is designed, constructed, and stamped in accordance with the rulesof this Section.

    SEC3NCA.PPT 9/96

  • Page 8(c) ONE/TV/BV - Nuclear Milano, June 2009

Item. A product constructed under a Certificate of Authorization (NCA-3120) or material (NCA-1220).

Part. An item which is attached to or becomes a portion of a component or component support before completionand stamping of the component or component support. Parts have workperformed on them requiring verificationby an Inspector.

Piping Subassembly. A section of piping system consisting of fittings and pipes or tubes which are fabricated as subassemblies in a shop or in the fieldbefore being installed in a nuclear power system.

Piping Support. A metal element whichtransmits loads between the nuclearpower plant piping and the buildingstructure.

Piping System. A piping system is an assembly of piping, piping supports, com-ponents, and, if applicable, componentsupports of one or more Code Classes, with a defined function as described in theDesign Specification for the pipingsystem.

    NCA-9000: Glossary - Code Items

Construction. An all-inclusive termcomprising materials, design, fabri-cation, examination, testing, inspection, and certification required in themanufacture and installation of an item.

Fabrication. Those actions required to manufacture components, parts, and appurtenances. These actions mayinclude forming, machining, assem-bling, welding, brazing, heat treating, examination, testing, inspection, and certification. Fabrication does not in-clude design.

Installation. Those actions required to place and attach components to theirsupports and join items of a nuclearpower system by welding or mechanical means.

Repair. The process of physicallyrestoring a nonconformance to a con-dition such that an item complies withCode requirements.

Verification. A review to ensure thatactivities have been performed and documented in accordance withapplicable requirements.
