◆ Global demand for automobiles by powertrainIf the trend continues as it is today, gasoline-powered cars should peak out around 2040.

◆ Demand for automobiles by region

⇒ Steady capital investment related to automobile production

☆If cost reduction advances, we can expect long-range growth of the market.☆We can also expect renewal demand.

[Preconditions]Power generation cost ≦JPY14/KWh

Due to overinvestment in facilities in 2011, demand remained slack in the following 3 years. The supply-and-demand balance has been corrected in 2014.

1) Growth of existing businesses

2) Structural reforms

Growth based on innovation1) Product development and differentiation

2) Expansion of business domain

Tasks

Development and launch of industry pacesetting DANTOTSU products by emphasizing environmental conservation, ICT, economy and safety

Development of products designed to meet next-generation powertrains (energy savings and compactness)

Development of next-generation products(by incorporating technologies designed to substantially cut down customers’ production costs)

Development of new markets

Businesses

Standardization (modularization), shortening lead-time from orders received to shipment

Expansion of parts and service operations

More applications of core technologies and products and business expansion in the supply chainProposals to improve customers’ productivity through ICT applications, and preventive maintenance

Reinforcement of operations in China, Asia and North America

Structural reforms: Improvements of SVCs and fixed costs, reinforcement of price and SVM management, and improvement of OVCs (claim expenses)

Reforms of procurement and production system

7Lead-time Reduction Efforts: Modularization of Customer-specified Parts

At present, we design parts specified by each customer, which makes it very difficult for us to improve lead-time, quality and costs.

Modularization

We will first consolidate models and promote modularization at the time of model changes.

1) Design man-hour:-70%

2) Design lead-time: 5 months ⇒ 2.5 months

Modularization of jibs as the next task⇒ Use of CAM

5) Manpower shift to development

3) Quality improvementImprovement of design quality by means of assessment In advance

4) Cost reduction・Reduction of SVCs by reviewing

design drawings.・Reduction of design expenses

Started in January 2014.

Projected reduction of design manpower for transfer machines and machining centers due to modularizationNote: Modularization is an important effort

of reforming production system.

8Development Designed for Production Support Needs –Growing out of only selling machines-

By assessing how far we, a machine tool maker, can penetrate into customers’ production from the viewpoints of both maker and user, we will not only strive to develop new business models but also make contributions to Komatsu Group’s production reforms.
