The OECD Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC)

• Largest survey of adult skills ever conducted

• Direct assessment of literacy, numeracy and problem

solving in a technology-rich environment in the adult

population (16-65)

• 24 participating countries

• Data collection: August 2011 to July 2012

• First results to be published October 8 this year

The Nordic PIAAC Network

• Representatives from five countries: Denmark, Estonia,

Finland, Norway and Sweden

• Financing from the Nordic Council of Ministers

• Three main goals:

The establishment of the Nordic PIAAC Network

The construction of a Nordic PIAAC database, containing micro data

from PIAAC as well as data from national registers

Publishing a Nordic PIAAC report with the main purpose to describe

the structure of information processing skills in the Nordic countries

and Estonia, with focus on similarities and differences

The Nordic PIAAC Database

• Micro data from PIAAC, as well as comparable and relevant

data from registers

• Will be used to create the Nordic report

• Should also be made available for other research projects

• Test database launched in 2011

• Database to be opened in the end of 2013

Database framework

• Physically located at Statistics Denmark

• Secure remote access system

• Researchers apply for access to the database to a

committee of representatives from each country

Database content

• Background Questionnaire data

• Cognitive Scores for Literacy, Numeracy and Problem

solving

• Data from national registers in Denmark, Estonia, Finland

and Sweden for the reference years 2008 and 2011 and

Norway for 2011. Register variables for reference year 2014

will be added to the database in spring 2016.
