2nd Grade Hilton Waikoloa Dolphin Quest Field Trip
On January 11, 2019, second grade students in Mrs. Long’s and Mrs. Yoshikawa’s class visited the Hilton
Waikoloa to participate in the Dolphin Quest program. Students learned about mammals of the sea, the body
and life cycle of turtles and how to be caring citizens of our animals and environment. The highlight of our visit
was getting up close to the beautiful dolphins to learn about how they breathe, swim and communicate. We
loved feeding them, touching them and splashing them back after they splashed us! Three more classes will
be attending the Dolphin Quest soon. We had a memorable, fun trip!

ROBOTICS
Over the past 5 months, our Konawaena Elementary RoboCats have been busy building, driving and programming their VEX IQ robots. On January 19, 2019, our school hosted the West Hawai’i VEX IQ League Finals Meet in our cafeteria. Twenty-two teams from all over West Hawai’i participated in this event. Congratulations to all of our RoboCats for their hard work over the season as well as bringing home 3 awards - Think Award, Build Award, and the Elementary Excellence Award. One of our teams will be continuing on and traveling to the Hawai’i State VEX IA Championship in Honolulu on March 1-2, 2019. We would like to extend a big thank you to all of the volunteers, teachers, parents, and students for making these events possible. It takes a lot of help to organize, plan and run robotics and we are very thankful to have so much support.
Special thanks to Mrs. Monica Nonaka without your leadership and valuable time this will not have been possible! The students are very lucky that they’re able to participate and learn robotics.

Kindergarten News The DARE program has begun with Officer Abran visiting all five kindergarten classes in January. The first lesson on using 911 for emergencies was informational and our kinders now know not to call 911 when there is a cat stuck in a tree. Other lessons will be about good and bad drugs, being observant in the community, stranger danger, and a few other important topics. The kindergarten classes will also be visiting the Police Station in February. Here is Officer Abran during his first lesson with a kindergarten class.
Third Grade Splash Day
Cloudy skies and a cool breeze did not chill the excitement of the third graders as they
headed off for their Konawaena Pool Splash adventure. On December 14, 2018, fifty-six well
deserving students hiked up to the Konawaena Pool and spent 45 minutes splashing, jumping
off the diving board, and enjoying each other’s company. The sun even made a special
appearance to warm up the day. Students earned the break from the classroom by being
good citizens who consistently demonstrated behaviors of all six GLO’s throughout the
quarter. The third graders would like to thank the 14 parent volunteers and Mrs. Ogi for
coming to help chaperone the activity. Truly, without them, there wouldn’t have been any
swimming. Another pool splash is planned in March and it is expected that even more 3rd
graders will be there to enjoy it.

Welcome New Staff
In January we welcomed two new members to our staff in very key positions.
Dayne Snell-Quirit is coming to us from Hoʻokena School where she was a Teacher and later a
Reading and Math Coach. She will be taking a temporary assignment as Vice Principal replacing
Susan Guccione who is taking a leave for the remainder of the year.
Karen Kawamoto is returning to Konawaena Elementary as our new SASA after a four-year stint
at Konawaena High School as an account clerk. Karen worked many years here as a clerk prior
to moving to the High School. We are beyond thrilled to have her back.
However, we are sad to say good-bye to Cynthia Taniyama who was our SASA for many years
and wish her the best in her well-deserved retirement.
