Koondrook Primary School
Principal’s Report House Colour Day Congratulations to Zara and the Student Leadership Team for their organisation of the House Colour day. Zara raised $558.85 on the day with some fierce bidding to be able to cut some hair and, added to her total, raised a whopping $2553.30 for Blood Cancer Research. A great effort Zara, well done! The Student Leadership Team had organised some great activities to top off a fun day. There were three legged races, egg and spoon races, an obstacle course, colourful house colour painting and design a house logo. All students had fun and some of the year 5’s stepped up and showed some leadership of their own which was great to see. You can see the house colour paintings in the foyer at school; they make a very colourful entrance! Welcome Mr McLaren We welcome Mr McLaren to Koondrook Primary School. Mr McLaren will join our teaching staff at Koondrook Primary each Tuesday. Mr McLaren will be teaching PE across the school. This will mean that Mrs Lake can spend her three days at school supporting the learning program across Prep/1/2. Working Bee Our Working Bee is Sunday, 25th March at 9am. We are hoping to paint as much of the woodwork around the school as we can, so it would be great if we could get as many families as possible to help. There are also a couple of trees that need trimming. It doesn’t matter if you can only spare an hour, all help is very much appreciated. We need ice cream and margarine containers. If you have a paint brush please bring it along.

New Look School Web Page On Thursday we hope to launch our new-look web page. I would like to thank Tim Millard, Kate Donehue and Karen Naismith for the time they have put in developing our new website. To help the organisers we are asking you to please: - Divide your dozen cakes and muffins onto two trays, cover and clearly label both. - Divide slice in half and place on two plates, covered and clearly labelled. - Full cakes are to be placed on plate, covered and labelled. *Labels on baked items need to state what it is (name of item) and the ingredients used in order from most to least. Please remember that all cakes need to be at the school by 9am and the stall starts at 10am out the front of Foodworks in Barham. Thank you to the families who have already donated Easter eggs for the raffle. Winter Uniform Orders Mrs Ficken is putting in a winter uniform order before the end of Term 1 so it will be ready for Term 2. We have to finalise tickets, so full payment needs to be received by the first day of next term. There are still some places available for parents who would like to attend. Parents will need a Working With Children Check. Please see Amanda or Judi if you would like to come along. The cost of the excursion is $97.00 for students - bus and show. The cost for parents will be $117.00. A Parent expression of interest requires a $30 deposit. CSEF may be used by the students to pay for the excursion. Week 8 – International Day of Happiness 20th March This is a day dedicated to having
conversations, taking action and spreading more happiness in our homes, workplaces, schools and communities. We all want to lead a happy life and want the people we love to be happy too. Our actions and choices can affect our happiness. What makes us happy has less to do with our money or possessions and more to do with our attitudes and relationships with other people. Visit http://www.actionforhappiness.org/ for more information.

Bullying. No Way! At Koondrook Primary School we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone. Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents and carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying. You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and respond to it effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone. If your child talks to you about bullying: 1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to let your child tell you all about the situation. After they have told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to - who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child's experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child. 2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like “That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that” or “I'm so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all” 3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them to feel they have some power in the situation. 4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practice strategies at home to help your child feel more confident. 5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child's teacher, and if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have any concerns about your child's safety. 6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going, it can take time to resolve issues, so check in with your child regularly about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important. If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents. As well, please contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to prevent bullying. Thanks for your support to make our school a great school for everyone.
