10 Kosice Gold treasureThe treasure consists of eleven and a half kilograms of more than 2000 gold coins and a gold chain, which were found during the reconstruction of the former residence of the Spis Business Association, a financial institute operat-ing in Spis area in 1935! The treasure is traveling around the world these days and will return to Kosice in 2013.

Before holocaust, Kosice was a city with one of the largest and most prominent jewish communities in the area of today’s Slovakia. In 1944, it took less then a month to transport almost the whole community to the concentration camps. The synagogues, schools and places to worship have remained, and they now create an inseparable part of the city’s atmosphere and their visitation will provide those willing to explore the city more on the city walk „The Jewish Košice“ with an unforgettable experience.

Directions:From highway Prešov:On the corssroad Palackeho turn right to the center, after 2 trafic lights go straihgt on and under the bridge turn left. Then first right, and first right again. Yuo are at Puškinova street, follow the street straight and in the end turn right. the Botanical Garden of pavol J. Šafárik University in Košice (hereinafter referred to as BG pJŠU) is located in the northwestern part of the Košice Basin at the base of the slopes of the east foothill of the slovak Ore mountains of the site Bankov and its local part, the red Bluff. Before building the town hall in its current place, there were probably two standing Gothic bourgeois houses. The Town Hall was built according to plans by an architect from Bratislava named J. Langer during 1779–1780. The capital repair was carried out in the 80s of the 19th century. This changed its style in the southern part of the building and ex-tended the court wings. This part has currently obtained corresponding paint decorations. The building underwent several repairs in the 19th century, especially on the surface of the walls. The paintings on the surface of the walls were also renovated and restored. In 1995, when the building has already served the last 50 years as a library, city coun-cil decided that the historic Town Hall would serve its purpose once again. In the years 1997–1999, this historic building has undergone complete reconstruction. Historic Town Hall building is owned by the City of Kosice and in the competence of the Administration of the Property of Kosice, s. r. o. After the reconstruction in 1997, it is used for representa-tive purposes by the mayor of Kosice.

the Lower Gate

The fortification system of the city of Košice came into being in 13th century. The first phase of its construction took place during the years from 1260 to 1290. It underwent a compli-cated development and exhibits number of different construction phases.

the remains of the Lower Gate have been discovered during the reconstruction of the main street – Hlavna ulica during the years 1996 to 1998 and the city has decided to locate a unique underground museum here.

The Technical university of Košice was founded in 1952, but its roots must be sought much deeper in the past. As early as in1657, the universitas Cassoviensis was established in Košice, but technical education in Slovakia was only elevated to higher level in 1762, when the Austro-Hungarian monarch Maria Theresa established the Mining Academy in BanskáŠtiavnica. Slovak Technical Museum (STM) is a specialized museum, providing an overview of the development of science and technology. Eastern slovak Gallery

The rich artistic and historical background of the region of eastern Slovakia in the last century (with headquarters in Levoca, Presov and Kosice) and developed artistic life in the 20th century – especially in Kosice and Presov, created the need of specialized institution in eastern Slovakia which would survey the fine art not only of the last two centuries. The eastern Slovak Gallery was founded in 1951, immedi-ately after the Slovak National Gallery foundation. Today it provides a unique place in the historical center for holding social events and conferences with the capacity of up to 150 persons, modern technical equipment and catering.

Executioner s Bastion and rodošto(East Slovak Museum in Košice)

The exposition presents the monuments related to the cer-emonial transportation of mortal remains of Rákóczi and his companions to Košice in 1906 as well as the original interior of the dining room with the collections related to the prince. In front of the Memorial house there is a sculpture of Francis II Rákóczi – a gift from the Republic of Hungary in the honor

of the 300th anniversary of the birth and the 100th anniver-sary of the re-interring of Prince Francis II Rákóczi in Košice. Capacity of 120 people for conference and 450 for garden party serves as a unique venue in the historical city center.

from Budapest and in the year 1925 won the international competition to build neologic synagogue in Kosice in the end of Moyzesova Street. The shape of the House of Arts recalls the legendary Roman Pantheon. In the former synagogue hall, the acoustics is so great that the Philharmonic Orchestra plays there even without an audience, for example when recording CDs. In this hall, the last modification was made in 1977, when the most modern concert organ in Czechoslovakia of those times was installed there. And therefore, not only the Kosice Music Spring but also annual International Organ Festival (in autumn) are held there. The hall is suitable for 1100 people.

The ZOO in Košice is the largest ZOO in Slovakia and the third largest in europe, though visitors are allowed only in about one third of this area. Since 1840, Košice had become home to one of the largest and most prominent Jewish communities in Slovakia. Their rich communal life was destroyed in 1944, when almost all Jewish citizens of Kosice were deported to Auschwitz. Today, the Jewish community has only about 280 members.
