Intrigue, persecution and tragic destinies go together in this pageturner of a crime novel.

It is a mild autumn evening and conversations and business go on as usual in the exclusive hotel in Copenhagen when a stranger steps in to the hotel restaurant and brutally guns down a well-known businessman .

The controversial Detective Chief Inspector Martin Bjergmark and his team are put on the case .

In the wake of a welter of illegal money transactions, the credit crunch, bankrupcies and corrupt civil servants, another businessman is murdered .

As the case moves forward, the list of suspects grows . Power, greed and profit for borrowed money lead the police to former kingpins which only makes solving the case more difficult .

Bjergmark follows various leads about a man who has disappeared, but the big breakthrough is a long time coming .

Bente Nimb. Born in 1940 in Copenhagen. Her first book, Rejsen mod Bente, was published in 2001. She has more than 35 years of experience in the real estate and finance business, and is always occupied with new projects.

Earlier publications:• Rejsen mod Bente, 2001 (Journey towards Bente)• Mord i julen, 2004 (Murder at Christmas)• Mord på kræmmermarkedet, 2005 (Murder at the Market)• Mord i Frihavnen, 2007 (Murder in the Freeport)• Mord i mosen, 2008 (Murder in the Marsh)

The author has always received great reviews, which is down to her extremely authentic writing style.

All the characters in her crime novels - the outcast, the homeless, the prostitutes, the criminals etc — are persons she has met in real life while doing research for the stories.

When writing ”Mord i mosen”, one of the people she talked with was a psychiatrist in order to better understand possible motives for insane people to commit murder.

Excerpt:

In the dim light from the lamp he had a strange sensation that he wasn’t alone. He let his eyes run over the wallpapered walls, turned his head to the left and looked towards the patio door.

Something had changed. He noticed it almost immediately.

The gap between the heavy curtains was still about two inches wide, but they weren’t hanging in quite the same way as before. And the door had been closed shut. The curtains weren’t moving and yet he was sure that someone was standing behind them.

Who?

Terror immediately overwhelmed him. He began to sweat, his pyjama top was cold and sticky. Helplessly left to his own thoughts and unable to tear his eyes from the door, he sat up in bed.

The first bullet hit him in the top of his forehead.

He was thrown backwards on the bed. He gasped for breath, making it easy for the killer to fire the next bullet into his mouth.

A few seconds later, the figure vanished into the darkness.

came running after them. He rubbed up against Sabrina’s leg

and then deposited his find by her feet.

They both gasped at the shocking sight on the forest floor.

Sabrina stared and stared and refused to believe what she was

seeing.

Saigo looked at her and went back to his find, pushing it closer

to her, close enough to touch her feet. Startled, she jumped

back, feeling nauseous.

In front of them laid a skull – a human skull...”

During the night between 25 and 26 May, Mr and Mrs Villadsen are abducted from their home in Hjørring, in northern Jutland. Subsequently, they are brutally executed by an unknown killer. The murders appear to be carefully planned.

Detective Chief Inspector Kristian Swane’s holiday in Skagen is interrupted, when he is drawn in to an intense and mysterious hunt for a murderer .

It soon turns out that he is facing a fateful case where the border between good and evil is erased and where justice appears in more than guise .

A story which forces the reader to take a stand .

Jakob Knudsen (born 1969) is a lecturer at University College Nordjylland, where he has taught since 1998. He was educated at the Danish University of Education and Roskilde University.

Jakob Knudsen lives with his family in Hjørring in northern Jutland, where he has lived for most of his life.

Hopeful Heart is Jakob Knudsens first novel. It is the first in a planned series about Chief Inspector Swane and his team.

Excerpt:

She woke up in a surreal, nightmarish state in an unfamiliar

place. A smell of machines, oil and garage was the first to strike

her senses. She could barely move, tied up as she was with gaf-

fer tape on hands and feet, lying on a cold concrete floor. Her

head was pounding so hard it felt like it was about to burst and

her throat ached with an unnatural, greedy feeling of thirst.

Her foggy consciousness was fuelled by a violently beating heart

and a nauseating fear. She had to get someone’s attention. Find

out something. She tried to speak, but her tongue was stuck

to the roof of her mouth and all she could manage were a few

weak, helpless noises.

Her pain and despair grew. The pain and despair which strikes

someone who doesn’t know the circumstances of or the reason

for her fate.

Excerpt:

Suddenly, he felt something, a burning and stinging pain in his

entire body that made him unable to run any further.

It hurt like hell, and when he looked down his body, he saw

smoke coming from his trousers and suddenly he realized that

he had been struck by lightning. Quickly, he put out the flames

with his arms, but when he tried to continue on his run, it was

as though his legs didn’t want to do what he wanted, and all he

could do was stand there.

In the distance, he could see the sky slowly brightening again

and with the rain slowing down, he knew that the storm was

disappearing again, which the pain in his body and legs most

certainly was not. Luckily, he hadn’t got very far, and on stiff and

aching legs he turned around, with a distinct feeling that some-

thing was not right.

A drug-using illegal immigrant with a mysterious background. A pastor whose aspirations of being an author are thwarted because of his unimaginative name. A laptop with a brand new manuscript and a burglary.

Mix all of these together and you get a surprising cocktail – a subtle satire of a manipulative publishing world, reviewers bent on character assasination, superficial pop culture and extreme Americans . Also in the author’s crosshairs are the erosion of the importance of the national church in Danish society and the Danish tax burden .

This is the story of two people from different worlds who are forced together in a grand scheme of deception in their chase for money, fame and meaning in a life filled with disappointments .

Elisabeth Lyneborg has been a pastor of the Danish National Church for 26 years and has been a published authour since 1979. Her first book was the humorous ”Priests Are People Too” and since then she has written 18 books in various genres, for both adults and children. She has also had one book published in America. She has also studied anthropology at the University of Copen-hagen and has been a member of a number of board of direc-tors. Elisabeth Lyneborg is also a busy and popular guest speaker.

Excerpt:

She stands in front of him, challengingly. ”So, to what do I owe

the pleasure of your visit? Have you come to give me back my

book? Or did you come to tell me that you’ve told your publish-

er it was actually me who wrote your bestselling novel, and that

my gigantic fee is waiting for me in the bank?”

He looks nervously at her and starts patting his pockets. She

points the pepper spray at him and says harshly, ”Keep your

hands on your knees. If you have a flick knife in your pocket,

forget about it.”

”I want a cigarette,” he says, drops of perspiration appearing on

his forehead.

”That won’t be possible. There’s no smoking in this house. You’ll

have to wait until you’re outside.”

He sweats and his hands are shaking. He needs his ampheta-

mine and he is afraid of the irate woman.
