08/16-12/16 Consultant. Puerto Rico Health Care Infrastructure Assessment. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (S. Zuckerman, PI, Urban Institute, UI Contract 09153-6; U.S. DHHS Contract: HHSP233201500064I_HHSP23337006T). The purpose of this project is to develop a better understanding of the health care infrastructure and related issues in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. This project will include a robust, extensive environmental scan of existing literature and other sources related to Puerto Rico’s health system, along with a site visit to the Commonwealth and the convening of a technical expert panel to examine these issues. (Effort: 8%, 1 year)

07/13-6/16 Consultant. Biopsychosocial Determinants of Sleep and Wellbeing for Teens in Fragile Families (L Hale, PI, Stony Brook University). The proposed research investigates the biopsychosocial (e.g., socioeconomic status, neighborhood factors, genetic) determinants of adolescent sleep patterns and their associations with biological (i.e., obesity) and psychological (i.e., depression) outcomes. Further, the study will investigate the direct and indirect effects of physical activity and screen time exposure on adolescent sleep, health, and wellbeing. Understanding the relative importance of these factors will identify and inform the development of culturally-sensitive interventions to promote overall health among adolescents. (Effort: <1% 1 year)

7/15-6/16 Co-Investigator. Addressing Health Literacy and Numeracy to Prevent Childhood Obesity. National Institute of Child Health and Development, NCTO1040897 (E. Perrin, PI NC-Chapel Hill Site). In 2003, Surgeon General Richard Carmona suggested that low health literacy is "one of the largest contributors to our nation's epidemic of overweight and obesity." Over 26% of preschool children are now overweight or obese, and children who are overweight by age 24 months are five times as likely as non-overweight children to become overweight adolescents. The aim of the study is to assess the efficacy of a low-literacy/numeracy-oriented intervention aimed at teaching pediatric resident physicians to promote healthy family lifestyles and prevent overweight among young children (age 0-2) and their families in under-resourced communities. (Effort: 5%, 1 year)

04/13-3/15 Consultant. Implications of Immigration Enforcement Activities for the Well-being of Children in Immigrant Families: An Exploratory Study. Department of Health and Human Services (H. Koball, PI, Urban Institute, Contract). This study will explore the consequences of immigration enforcement activities for the well-being of Children in Immigrant Families. Specifically, this study aims to: (1) describe the experiences of children and families affected by parental detention and removal; (2) understand the health and human services needs of these children and families and their access to public and private service delivery systems; (3) identify challenges and emerging promising practices for serving these children and families; and (4) identify potential opportunities for federal agencies to support effective state and local responses through guidance, technical assistance, and future research.
