Originally made for SNAG’s Exhibition inMotion at the 2003 conference in San

Francisco (inset), Totem remains one of myfavorite pieces I’ve ever made. This oversized

brooch epitomizes many of the technical anddesign elements that would become

signatures of my work in years to come,including its sense of “frozen music” and use

of piano key ivory scrimshaw. With more than100 solder joints, this labor-intensive piece

was forged and fabricated from manyindividual pieces of Sterling sliver wire

and sheet. A collector’s item.

The centerpiece of my first solo show, Astro isthe quintessential Mid-Century modern tributein my collection. Movement is both impliedand actual in the strong lines of this design,punctuated by hand-carved solid walnut“cabochons.” As with much of myone-of-a-kind jewelry, this intricate piececomprises dozens of individually-fabricatedelements arranged to create what I feel is abalanced, joyous composition. It’s a truestatement piece and continues to be myfavorite neckpiece to date.

The first in my “milagro” series (still in production), thisneckpiece is another milestone in my collected works. With itsbouquet of Strike Anywhere™ match heads gathered likedelicate rosettes, this milagro represents the heart waiting tobe ignited by love. As with many of my pieces, the title comesfrom a favorite song lyric, which is delicately hand-engraved onthe back. The robust edge is knurled to facilitate ignition, butan outside hand is needed to start the reaction.
