GK NEWS NETWORK Srinagar, Nov 14: A family in south Kash- mir’s Anantnag district is made to roam for pillar to post for full compensation to their 50 kanal land and fruit trees worth Rs 12 lakh under use of Army for the past two decades. The family of Muhammad Ibrahim Sheikh and his brothers have been approaching the office of Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, District Horticulture Department and Com- mander 2 Sector of Army’s RR seeking com- pensation to their land and fruit trees as per the existing market rates, and also the finan- cial returns for fruit trees coming under Army Camp at Urjoo in Qazigund area. Documents with Greater Kashmir reveal that the family is paid a little over Rs 3 lakh per-year for 50 kanals of land under Army, whose existing market value is millions of rupees. In a letter dated 05-08-2011, the Horticul- ture department has furnished its assess- ment statement of trees coming under the alignment of Army Camp at Ujroo, putting it at Rs 12,59,100 in respect of Abdul Karim and Muhammad Ibrahim of Qasba Anantnag. The Horticulture office has also certified that “the orchard area has remained under occupation of army since last 15 to 20 years which has reflected negatively upon the overall status of the fruit trees.” According to documents, the number of Apple, Pear, Cherry, Almond, Walnut, Apri- cot trees in the land is 927. In another letter the Additional Deputy Commissioner Anantnag has written to The Commander, 2 Sector RR at Ujroo that despite lapse of months since the Horticul- ture department made the assessment, the compensation for fruit trees hasn’t been released yet. In yet another letter, it has been reported that the land comes under Srinagar-Jammu highway expansion. “The land on which the fruit bearing trees does not fall under align- ment of four-laning of highway but is under possession of Army at Ujroo. The Compen- sation of fruit trees was earlier taken up with army authorities who declined the request on the ground that the camp is being shifted due to highway expansion and the army authorities are put to great loss on this count. Afterwards it was agreed by you that compensation amount will be borne by the National Highway Project. You are requested to disburse the payment to ben- eficiaries out of the funds meant for 4-laning of Highway,” a letter dated 20.12.2015 from Additional DC Anantnag to The Project Director NHAI, reads. The aggrieved family says the DC office and other departments are making them roam from pillar to post for the compen- sation. “All departments are just writing letters on the issue and not releasing the payment in our favour. We want our land to be freed or paid as per existing market rates. We also want full compensation of fruit trees,” they said. The family has now sought Chief Minis- ter’s intervention. “Mufti Sahib is our last hope in the matter. He should direct the inept DC office to intervene in the matter,” the family members said.
