“Sourashtra Heritage Chair” was established at
Saurashtra University in 2010 to facilitate study,
research and cultural exchange for strengthening ties
with Sourashtra Community. A host of scholars,
institutions, organizations, local communities as well as
NRIs, with a deep concern for Sourashtra language and
culture in Tamilnadu in general and Madurai in
particular, took the initiative and strove to find their
linguistic and cultural roots after 900 years of emigration
from Saurashtram in Gujarat.
In the course of last 7 years there have been
exchange programmes, publication of books and
research projects to facilitate and familiarize the
Sourashtra people at both ends. In sequence of these
activities, Dr Pratapsinh Chauhan, the Hon'ble Vice
Chancellor of Saurashtra University, has taken
immense interest and initiative to organize a National
Seminar, in the form of a LecDem – dialogue, on the
wedding ceremonies among Saurashtras and
Sourashtras. Allied with this seminar is a live cultural
interaction of Sourashtri scholars, research scholars,
students and faculty-representatives at an exemplary
wedding in the Temple City of Madurai.
This Seminar was held at 'Madurai Gandhi'

Srimad Venkataramana Bhagavathar was thedevoted chief disciple of Sadguru Sri Tyagaraja. He wasinstrumental in recording the numerous compositions ofTyagaraja in palm leaves for posterity. Nearly 26 yearshe served his Guru and earned his appreciation andblessings which is evidenced by the kritis of Tyagaraja. One such kriti is 'Nannu palimpa' in Mohana raga whichwas sung in ecstasy at the time when VenkataramanaBhagavathar presented the portrai t of SriKothandarama on the eve of the marriage of thedaughter of Tyagaraja.
This Boswell of Tyagaraja was born on 18.2.1781to Nannusamy of Ayyampettai of Thanjavur District inTamil Nadu. He was a child born as the Grandson ofKuppaiyer who was father of Nannusamy in answer tohis prayer to have a son of great music knowledge.Besides Sourashtram, his mother tongue, he learntSanskrit and Telugu and became a scholar. His longingfor music drove him to the house of Tyagaraja inThiruvayyaru. Initially he used to listen the musicstanding outside the house of Tyagaraja. Later this wasnoticed by Tyagaraja at the instance of his wife andasked Venkataramana whether he would like to learnthe music from him. Venkataramana was very happy tojoin the band of Tyagaraja's disciples and started takingkeen care of his Guru by rendering all the servicesneeded for day to day life for a number of years until hesettled in Walajapet for his livelihood.
Initially Venkataramana was a bit slow in graspingthe lessons taught by his Guru. Noticing this Tyagarajaprayed Sri Rama and composed "Gnanamosagaradha"in Shadvidhamargini raga to bestow the knowledge ofmusic to Venkataramana. From next day onwards
Venkataramana became an expert in music and wasable to record all kritis in palm leaves. He also recordedthe brief biography of Tyagaraja. In later years he alsocomposed songs in Telugu emulating his guru with hisown mudra 'Ramachandrapura vara Venkataramana'.His handwriting was very beautiful like printing which isevidenced by the bound paper volume Pothana TeluguBhagavatham which is still preserved by MaduraiSourashtra Sabha along with all the palm leaves andpaper manuscripts written by Venkataramana and hisson Krishnasamy Bhagavathar. Venkatarama'sdevotion to Tyagaraja continued even after hissettlement at Walajapet. When Tyagaraja visitedWalajapet, Venkataramana requested his Guru to staywith him for 12 days doing Bhajans. When he was takenthrough the process ion on the last day,Venkataramana's disciple Mysore Sadasiva Raocomposed the song ''Tyagarajaswami vedalina'' in todiraga and recorded this event.
Venkataramana attained mukthi on 15-12-1874.His descendants handed over the relics of Tyagarajalike Paduka, Tambura, etc. to Madurai SourashtraSabha where they are preserved. His Jayanti daycelebrations are held atAyyampettai every year where anumber of his disciples and carnatic music lovers paytheir homage.
