How Downton Abbey changed with the timesWe’re spending a getaway weekend in Yorkshire with our favorite MASTERPIECE family and their friends and servants. From start to finish, there are so many wonderful moments – and also plenty of history. Here’s how the Crawley family played their part in the technological and social changes that swept the country during the early 1900s.

1914: A telephone is installed at the Abbey.

Alexander Graham Bell was granted a patent for the telephone in 1875, but in 1899, only six out of 1,300 councils in Britain had telephone systems.

Season 1 – 3/17 8PM to 3/18 4AM

1917: Downton Abbey becomes a

convalescent home.

The War Office received thousands of offers from manor homes, schools, and other institutions to house wounded soldiers.

Season 2 – 3/18 4AM to 4:30PM

1920: Cora’s fortune is lost when the

Grand Trunk Railway goes bankrupt.

The Canadian company defaulted on loan payments in 1919, its stock was declared worthless in 1921, and the railway was nationalized in 1923.

Season 3 – 3/18 4:30PM to 3/19 5AM

1922: Mrs. Patmore gets a refrigerator.

Most homes relied on an icebox; only about 10 percent of British homes had electricity in the early 1920s.


1924: The Crawley family gets a radio to

hear King George V speak.

The first complete radio was built in 1894. The king’s first radio address made him a beloved monarch.

Season 5 – 3/19 5:30PM to 3/20 7AM

1925: Bertie Pelham flies to Morocco.

Commercial aviation only began in Britain in 1919, and was regulated by the government beginning in 1922.
