The ldea of chrlstenlng waters around the Hawallan Islands as the natlon's flrst humpback whale preserve may be on the verge of becomlng a reallty -- to the cheers of envlronmentallsts and the howls of boat­ers and flshermen

The plan has survlved years of local op­posltlon, acrlmonlOUS publlC hearlngs, pro­tests from state polltlclans, and, most re­cently, a strateglc move by a skeptlcal governor

Whale researcher James Hudnall flrst proposed a refuge ln waters around the lS­land of Mau] seven years ago He remalns the proJect's strongest proponent

"A whale sanctuary lS partlcularly ap­proprlate ln Hawall waters, where we have one of the great habltats ln whlch whales mate, calve, and nurse thelr young," he sald

Scientists Study Turtles' Frenzied Nesting

SYDNEY, Australla (UPI) -- Every year on a remote coral lsland off the far north Queensland coast, hundreds of turtles crawl ashore to lay thelr eggs

A normal occurrence most years, but thls year turtles are comlng ashore llter­ally by the thousand -- more turtles than anyone can remember

On Ralne Island one nlght recently, a team of SClentlsts counted 11,467 green turtles

The number of female green turtles on or about the coral reef was estlmated at about 50,000, and the total wlthln a radlus of about 18~ mlles at 100,000 to 150,000

The mass nestlng began last October and lS Just flnlshlng
