NashvilleThe Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution celebrated at 12 Noon Eastern Time the annual Wreaths Across America event. It was held at various cemeteries across our great state from Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga. Our TNSSAR Color Guard members from their local chapters participated in honoring the Veterans and placing wreaths at their graves.



On Tuesday November 10th, 2015 the TNSSAR Andrew Crockett Chapter participated in the Veterans Day parade in Franklin, TN at 11 am. The TNSSAR Color Guard members in Attendance: Tennessee State Commander David Miles Vaughn, David Eagan, Colin Wakefield, Roger Tenney, Jim Johnson, Jim McKinney, George Miller, Larry Pool, James Hobbs and Bob Hughes as Benjamin Franklin.

On Saturday the 7th of November 2015 the TNSSAR Valentine Sevier Chapter participated in the Veterans Day parade in Clarksville, TN at 10 am. The TNSSAR Color Guard members in Attendance: Valentine Sevier Chapter Commander James Thweatt, Johnny Head, Roger Tenney, Donald Horton, Jim Johnson, Don Batterson and George Miller with his Grandson in Militia.



It was a Rainy Fall afternoon on October the 25th, 2015 at 2:30 pm when the TNSSAR Lt. Andrew Crockett had a Revolutionary War Patriot Grave Marking for William Sparkman at the Sparkman Cemetery in Leiper’s Fork, TN. Lt. Andrew Crockett Chapter President James Hobbs was the Master of Ceremonies and TNSSAR President-Elect David Eagan gave Greetings for our State Society. Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson also gave Greetings. TNSSAR Genealogist Dick Spencer presented the Genealogy and History of Patriot William Sparkman. The TNSSAR Color Guard presented the Colors and fired a Musket Salute to Honor this Patriot and Compatriot John Clark played Taps. This was an Excellent Ceremony with many Descendants and Guests in Attendance. At the end of the Ceremony the Lt. Andrew Crocket Chapter inducted three new members into the Sons of the American Revolution.

William Reid Sparkman was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He served, along with his twin brother, William Jesse Sparkman Jr. William was born on Feb. 9, 1764 in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Even though his headstone indicates he was born in 1761, His family bible, written in his own hand, says he was born on Feb. 9, 1764. Died March 15, 1832 in Boston, Williamson Co., TN. William was a Private in the Colonial Army of North Carolina. He served under Col. William Polk and after the struggle, he moved his family to Williamson Co, TN.

On Saturday October 17, 2015 The TNSSAR Color Guard presented the Colors and helped the Long Island Chapter of the TSDAR mark the grave of Revolutionary war soldier, Capt James Gaines at the Bloomingdale Terrace Apartments Grounds at 10 am in Kingsport, TN.

Capt. Gaines served in a Virginia militia unit. Later He moved to North Carolina and commanded a N.C. company at Cowpens Battlefield and at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. After the war He moved to Tennessee and became a prosperous farmer. The ceremony included an address from Kingsport Mayor John Clark and Greetings from Dr Darryl Addington President of the TNSSAR. A three shot volley of muskets was fired followed by morning of arms as taps was played.

On Sunday the 4th of October 2015 the James Madison Chapter had a Grave Marking Ceremony Honoring Revolutionary War Patriot Luke Tipton in Dresden, TN at the Sunset Cemetery. It was a Great Ceremony with John McCutchen as Master of Ceremonies with President-Elect David Eagan giving greetings from our State Society. Rick Hollis member of the SAR Foundation also gave Greetings. Bill Hickerson gave a brief History of the Patriot and his Service. The TNSSAR Color Guard presented the Colors and Fired a 3 Shot Volley.

After this ceremony was finished then everyone went across the cemetery to do a TNSSAR Member Grave Marking for Gov. Ned McWherter (October 15, 1930 – April 4, 2011). McWherter is the only Tennessee Governor to hold membership in the Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Ned's son Mike McWherter is a member of the James Madison Chapter.

Patriot Luke Tipton was born May 14, 1760 in Baltimore County, Maryland the son of Edward Tipton and Jemina (Murray) Tipton. Edward was a brother of Colonel John Tipton and Major Jonathan Tipton who were at the Battle of King's Mountain.

In August 1778, Luke Tipton enlisted as a private in Captain Tarenton's Company, Bedford County, Pennsylvania Militia and served for two months. Luke re-enlisted in Captain Thomas Cluggage's Bedford County Rangers and served at Fort Roberdeau in Sinking Valley in present day Blair County, PA for one year. Tipton died in Weakley County, Tennessee on October 8, 1855, at the age of 95, and is buried at Sunset Cemetery in Dresden, TN.

Sunday the 20th of September 2015 the TNSSAR Color Guard presented the Colors for the Daughters of the American Revolution Tennessee Society as they celebrated their 14th Annual Constitution Week Bell Ringing at the Tennessee State Capitol in



Nashville. Daughter Jane Duggar was the Master of Ceremonies. Former United States 80th Attorney General under the George W. Bush Administration Judge Alberto Gonzales, Dean, College of Law, Belmont University was the Guest Speaker. TNSSAR President Dr. Darryl Addington gave greetings for the Tennessee Society.

On Saturday the 19th of September 2015, we had the “Gathering at Sycamore Shoals” in Elizabethton, Tennessee. This National Color Guard Event, Commemorating the Historic Gathering of the Overmountain Men and their march to the Battle of Kings Mountain. During the American Revolution, Sycamore Shoals was both the site of Fort Watauga, where part of a Cherokee invasion was thwarted in 1776, and the mustering ground for the Overmountain Men in 1780.

It was a Great Event with Compatriot Ronnie Lail, Master of Ceremonies. The TNSSAR Color Guard was joined in with SAR Color Guards from Kentucky, North and South Carolina and Virginia. Also, the Watauga Valley Fife and Drum Corps and the Washington County (NC) Regiment Militia joined in with us.

Also, Tennessee Compatriot Ronnie Lail was presented the Color Guard Von Steuben Medal. This National Medal is for 8 years of Service. This is a Great Honor to be presented this for any Color Guard Member



On Friday September 18th, 2015 Two Revolutionary War Patriots Captain Robert Lusk and Michael Hyder had their Graves Marked by the Tennessee Society. The Marking was in Elizabethton, TN at the Hyder Cemetery.

Robert Lusk, born 1737 Augusta County, VA, Died 1801 Carter County, TN. Robert received a land grant in 1778 in Washington County, NC (now Carter County, TN) and signed an oath of allegiance. He is also listed on NC Rev War Pay Voucher.

Michael Hyder, Sr. died June 25, 1790. Member of the Watuaga Association in Watauga Fort, June 21, 1776. He took part in all of the Indian Wars in Tennessee under Shelby, Sevier and Christian. He was in the following battles of the Revolution, Thickety Fort, Cedar Springs and Musgrove’s Mill in South Carolina. He was detailed from King’s Mountain expedition to defend the Watauga Settlement from Indian Invasion.

Invitation for this Event was by TNSSAR District One Chapters, Kings Mountain, State of Franklin and Watauga. Ronnie Lail was the Master of Ceremonies. The TNSSAR Color Guard was joined in with SAR Color Guards from South Carolina, Virginia and the Washington County (NC) Regiment Militia.

For the second consecutive year, members of the TNSSAR State Color Guard participated in the Reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville, Tennessee. David Brockman, a home school dad and blogger has arranged the event, and the State Color Guard was invited to participate. This year we had the Valentine Sevier Chapter, the Colonel Anthony Bledsoe Chapter, Andrew Crocket Chapter and Thomas Kilgore Chapter represented. Once the color guard was in place on the courthouse steps and portico, the Pledge of Allegiance was said, and several readers participated with different sections of the declaration.

Commander Roger Tenney and Guardsmen: Steve Gaines, Fred Ryan, James Hobbs, Johnny Head, Jim Thweatt, George Miller, Bob Hughes, Spencer Hardison, Donald Horton, Dennis Harris, Robert Nichols and Bob Parker.



The Stephen Holston Chapter held its annual Celebration of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence at James White's Fort on July 4th in Knoxville, TN. State President Dr. Darryl Addington gave greetings from the State. Members of the Children of the American Revolution had the Roll Call of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Cherel Henderson, Executive Director of the East Tennessee Historical Society, giving an address on the founding of our country and of Knoxville. There was a Volley Shot and Mourning of Arms. There were many in attendance to celebrate this event.

On the 20th of June 2015 in small church graveyard in Calhoun, TN members of the TNSSAR and DAR paid tribute to a Rev War Veteran of the American Revolution. Joseph McMinn was born in Pennsylvania to a family of Quakers yet enlisted in the continental Army during the Revolutionary War. After the war Joseph moved to Tennessee and became involved in politics. Joseph served in the territorial legislature representing Hawkins County. He was a member of the State Constitutional Convention and after Tennessee earned statehood, He served 3 terms as Speaker of the Senate. In 1815 Joseph McMinn was elected Governor of Tennessee and served 3 terms. After his political career ended Joseph was appointed U.S. Agent to the Cherokee Nation.

Members of the SAR & DAR placed a small marker at the foot of the monument honoring Joseph McMinn naming him simply a “Patriot”.

A combined Color Guard from “TNSSAR” and “TNSSR” under the command of Tanasi River Brigade Commander John Clines presented the colors and fired a three volley salute in honor of the Revolutionary soldier, Politician, and former Governor of Tennessee. Guardsmen TNSSAR– Jim McKinney, Claude Hardison, Bob George, Lynn Fox, Paul Jorden, Robert Woods, Sam Allen. TNSSR – Roy Melton, Jr., Roy Melton III.



On June 20th, 2015 at 2:30 pm the Joseph Greer and Col. Anthony Bledsoe Chapters had a Revolutionary War Patriot Grave Marking for Benjamin Lentz in Shelbyville, TN. At Crowell’s Chapel Church. Benjamin served three terms in the war, the first being as a substitute for his father Benjamin Lentz, Sr. in South Carolina. In the first term (5 months) he fought hostile Cherokee near Watuaga, North Carolina. Benjamin served his second term as a substitute for John Simmon in Rowan County, North Carolina. In his second term (9 months) in a battle of Stono River under General Lincoln, he was wounded in the leg and 36 were killed and 90 wounded. He served his third term as a substitute for Thomas Glaze in South Carolina for about (7 months) he was under General Rutherford’s command as they chased General Cornwallis around South Carolina and North Carolina. He got to Wilmington in time to see three British Ships sail out of the Harbor.

There were about 120 in attendance including the Color Guard. Joseph Greer Chapter President Mark Cox was the Master of Ceremonies and Col. Anthony Bledsoe Chapter member Direct Descendant Dennis Harris gave the History of this Patriot. Southern District VPG Rick Hollis gave Greetings and President-Elect David Eagan gave greetings from our State Society. After the 3 Shot Volley was fired to honor this Patriot, a Cannon was fired by Compatriots Bill Massey and Colin Wakefield then John Clark played Taps. It was an awesome and moving Ceremony. The TNSSAR Color Guard was joined in with Alabama and Georgia Color Guard.

The TNSSAR Color Guard Members in attendance were: TNSSAR State Commander David Miles Vaughn and guardsmen Jim McKinney, Colin Wakefield, Steve Gaines, Mark Cox, James Stone, David Eagan, Bob Hughes, Sanford Payton, Roy Harrell Phillips, Allen Poteete, John Clark, Claude Hardison, Dennis Harris, Fred Ryan, Larry Pool and James Hobbs. The Alabama members were: Bob Anderson, Jim Maples, and Skeet Vaughan. Georgia member Tom Crowell who was also a Direct Descendant of Benjamin Lentz.



On Memorial Day, 25 May, 2015 the TNSSAR Color Guard participated in a ceremony at the Healing Field/Flags of Remembrance, hosted by the Noon Exchange Club in Murfreesboro, TN. There were over 800 3’x5’ American flags arranged in straight rows, covering the field beside the First Methodist Church on West Thompson Lane. The idea behind the Healing Field originated as a way for the many people affected by the tragedy of September 11, 2001 to experience a spiritual and mental “healing”. It is sponsored by the Colonial Flag Foundation. Over the years, it has evolved into a Field of Honor, honoring fallen members of the American Armed Forces and a Field of Remembrance, honoring all who have served the United States, whether military, firefighters, police officers or first responders. The observance is usually held in the week (or weekend) leading up to Memorial Day and is held in several places all across our nation.

The National Society, Sons of the American Revolution has designated this observance as a National Color Guard Event and the Tennessee Society Color Guard was honored to participate. Because of inclement weather, David Miles Vaughn, our Color Guard Commander, was notified at 2:00 that the 5:00 event on Monday evening had been cancelled. His response was that “we’re not being cancelled. Our color guard will participate, no matter the weather”. By that time several of the color guardsmen were already on the road, some travelling fairly great distances to take part in this solemn observance. Our part of the program was expanded to encompass the entire Monday evening event. We had a procession of several of the Revolutionary War period flags escorted by Continentals and militiamen with their flintlocks. As always, we were well-received by the spectators, especially the children as we did our part in honoring all who have served and are serving. The cameras were clicking as we were at “Present Arms” during the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. We were not scheduled to fire our flintlocks, so several did not have black powder with them. However, once we found out we could fire them, we got together and those that brought cartridges aided those that didn’t and we fired several volleys. As always, the loud reports and the black powder smoke was a big hit.

On the 24th of May 2015, The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution, Andrew Crockett Chapter had a Double Grave Marking for Revolutionary War Patriots Capt. Anthony Sharpe and Pvt. George Hulme in Franklin, Tennessee at 2 pm. They were buried in a small Family Cemetery in a neighborhood off of Teil Drive. Andrew Crockett Chapter President James Hobbs was the Master of Ceremonies and TNSSAR President-Elect David Eagan gave Greetings from our State Society and Andrew Crockett Chapter Genealogist Dick Spencer gave the History of the two Patriots. There were about 75 in Attendance with 2 Family Descendants. Also, Mrs. Tennessee 2015 Cheryl Brehm attended this Excellent Grave Marking. TNSSAR State Color Guard Commander David Miles Vaughn commanded the presentation of Colors and Middle Tennessee French Lick Company Commander Edward Phillips commanded the Firing of the Firelocks.

On the 17th of May 2015, The Rachel Stockley Donelson Chapter, Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution had a Grave Marking for a Revolutionary War Patriot Captain Joshua Hadley in Thompson’s Station, Tennessee at 2 pm. The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution State Color Guard presented the Colors for this Ceremony. David Eagan, President-Elect of the TNSSAR gave Greeting’s from our Society. TNSSAR State Commander David Miles Vaughn commanded the presentation of the Colors and French Lick Company Commander Edward Phillips commanded the Firing of the Flintlocks. John Clark played Taps. It was and Excellent turnout with around 100 in attendance including numerous Descendants.

On May 9th, 2015 the Martin’s Station and Overmountain Men Chapters of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution had a Ceremony at 10 am for the 15th Anniversary Raid at Martin’s Station at the Wilderness Road State Park in Ewing, Virginia. Our TNSSAR State Color Guard joined in with the Virginia Color Guard and one member from the Kentucky Color Guard. The main speaker was PG Lindsey Brock and our TNSSAR President Dr. Darryl Addington gave greetings from our Tennessee Society. We had a Wreath Ceremony to Honor General Joseph Martin. The whole weekend was exciting from the Longhunter Encampment and Sutlers, to the Indian Raid on the Fort.

On the 30th of April 2015, The Mountain Brigade and Tanasi River Brigade TNSSAR Color Guard Divisions posted and retired the Colors for the 50th Vietnam Anniversary Vietnam War Commemorative Program in Morristown, TN at 5:30 pm. The Color Guard was commanded by Tanasi River Brigade Commander John Clines. Color Guard Members in Attendance, Sam Allen, Jim McKinney, Claude Hardison, Ronnie Lail, Mike Mankin, James Stone, John Kubenka and Lynn Fox and Non-SAR member Mel McKay.

On April the 25th, 2015 the Mountain Brigade and the Tanasi River Brigade TNSSAR Color Guard Eastern Divisions presented the Colors and Fired a 3 Shot Volley to Honor the Patriot for the Daughters of the American Revolution Spencer Clack and Samuel Doak Chapters for the Grave Marking of Revolutionary War Patriot Christopher Moyers, Jr. at the Moyers Family Cemetery in White Pine, TN. Greetings were given by TSDAR Members Ellen Betts and Gina Leatherwood. There were many Descendants in Attendance.

The Color Guard was commanded by Tanasi River Brigade Commander John Clines with Guardsmen Bill Pettis, Ed Kingsbury, Wayne Croley, Ronnie Lail, Michael Mankin, Jim McKinney and Tracy Wilson.



On the 25th of April 2015, The Stones River Chapter, Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, TN Stones River Chapter hosted a Grave Marking for Revolutionary War Patriot Maj. John Nash Read in Smyrna, TN at the Templeton Grove Cemetery. Compatriot Edward Phillips, Vice President of the Andrew Crockett Chapter gave Greetings from our Tennessee State Society. Compatriot Glenn Taylor, President of the Stones River Chapter gave Greetings and a brief History of the Patriot. Charlotte Reynolds, DAR State Vice Regent gave Greetings from the DAR Tennessee Society. There were many Descendants and Family members of Patriot Maj. Read in attendance.

The Color Guard was commanded by State Commander David Miles Vaughn along with KYSSAR and ALSSAR Color Guard members joined in with us as we presented the Colors, and a 3 Shot Volley was fired to honor this patriot. .

The TNSSAR Color Guard presented the Colors for the April 21st opening session of the Tennessee State Senate at the State Capitol in Nashville, TN. Edward Phillips, Vice President of the Andrew Crockett Chapter gave Greetings on behalf of our State Society.



The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution was founded December 2nd, 1889, 126 years ago with the purpose of perpetuating the history and patriotism of our ancestors who lived the American Revolution.

The first Patriot's Day was celebrated in Massachusetts on April 19th, 121 years ago. In 2008 the Tennessee State Senate established Patriot's Day in Tennessee to honor and recognize the Patriots of the American Revolution and the struggle which our nation endured.

The Sons of the American Revolution is the leading male lineage society that perpetuates the ideals, principles and liberties established by the founding fathers during the American Revolution. We are a patriotic and educational organization seeking to maintain the knowledge and meaning of patriotism and to teach the public, especially our youth, the value and the struggle our patriotic ancestors endured to give birth to our nation.

The Color Guard was commanded by State Commander David Miles Vaughn with Guardsmen Dennis Harris, Steve Gaines, Sanford Payton, Maurice Kellogg, Clarence Watson and Larry Pool.

Today the 11th of April 2015 the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution presented the Colors for the opening of the Tennessee History Day 2015 competition at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center – Polk Theater in Nashville, TN at 9 am. TNSSAR State President Dr. Darryl Addington gave greetings from the State Society. The Tennessee Historical Society is a non-profit, membership organization headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Established in 1849, the Society's purpose is to "promote interest in and preservation of all matters relating to the history of Tennessee."

The Tennessee History Day competition is the state affiliate of the National History Day competition. Six preliminary district competitions take place in West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, North Middle Tennessee, East Tennessee, Northeast Tennessee, and Southeast Tennessee in February and March culminating with the state level competition in April. State-level winners move on to the National History Day competition in June. History Day is a year-long curriculum enhancement program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics.

The TNSSAR Color Guard was commanded by State Commander David Miles Vaughn with Guardsmen Frank Schafer, Edward Phillips, Roger Tenney, David Eagan, George Miller, Fred Ryan and Larry Pool.



On the 28th of March 2015, the TNSSAR Color Guard presented the Colors and a 3 Shot Volley to Honor the Legacy of PG Harry T. Burns, Sr. (1895-1977). The event was at 3 pm in Niota, TN. Charles Dammann of the John Sevier Chapter welcomed everyone. Southern District VPG Richard D. Hollis was the Master of Ceremonies with NSSAR President General Lindsey Brock giving Greetings from the National Society and Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives the Honorable Beth Harwell being the Guest key-note Address Speaker. This was one Awesome Event and it was an Honor to have such an Excellent Color Guard Turnout, HUZZAH!! There were many Dignitaries and NSSAR Officers and Burn Family Descendants and Guests in attendance. The Color Guard was commanded by TNSSAR State Commander David Miles Vaughn when the Colors were presented and Southern District Commander James Stone was in charge of the Firelock 3 Shot Volleys and Mourning with John Clark playing Taps.

TNSSAR Color Guard members in attendance were: Southern District Commander James Stone, Tennessee State Commander David Miles Vaughn with Guardsman John Clines, John Clark, Wayne Croley, David Eagan, Stan Evans, Lynn Fox, Steve Gaines, Bob George, James Hobbs, Johnny Head, Lee Johnson, David Johnston, Ed Kingsbury, John Kubenka, Ronnie Lail, Michael Mankin, Jim McKinney, Larry Pool, Fred Ryan, Roger Tenney, Jim Thweatt, Colin Wakefield, Clarence Watson and Dave Whaley. We were joined with Louisiana, Mississippi and Kentucky Color Guard members.

On the 22nd of March 2015 the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution had a Grave Marking for a Revolutionary War Patriot, Private James Brigham in Clarksville, TN. The event was hosted by the TNSSAR Chapters Valentine Sevier of Clarksville, TN and the James Madison Chapter of Jackson, TN. It was a Great Ceremony with 24 Color Guard members from the TN and KY Societies presenting the Colors and Firing a 3 Shot Volley to Honor this Patriot.

With TNSSAR State Commander David Miles Vaughn commanding the Guard with TN members Larry Pool, Jim McKinney, Dennis Harris, Roger Tenney Clarence Watson, Sanford Payton, Jim Thweatt, John Clark, Allen Poteete, Johnny Head, James Stone Edward Phillips, Bob Hughes, Steve Gaines, James Hobbs, Fred Ryan, Bob Parker, Donald Horton and Jim Johnson.

The KYSSAR Stephen Trigg Chapter Color Guard Members were Geoff Badgett, Steve Mallory, Cody Burlingame and Jerry Burlingame.



On February 21st, 2015 the TNSSAR Stephen Holston Chapter hosted a George Washington Birthday Dinner at the East Tennessee History Museum. Guardsman from the Stephen Holston Chapter in attendance were Lynn Fox, Lee Johnson, Paul Jorden, Tracy Wilson, Ed Kingsbury, Sam Miller and Richard Scott. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter Guardsman James Stone and Col. Anthony Bledsoe Chapter Guardsman David Miles Vaughn and Fred Ryan.

Our Tennessee Society was at the 234th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens in Cherokee County, SC on January 17, 2015. President General Lindsey Brock brought greetings from the NSSAR. Our members brought chapter wreaths to be presented during the ceremony. The Color Guard marched to the Monument and onto the Battlefield. Approx. 60 in Color Guard with Mike Tomme past National Commander commanding the guard. TNSSAR members in attendance, Steve Gaines – Col. Anthony Bledsoe, James Hobbs – Lt.
