KYOGLE HIGH BEEFS IT UP!
Kyogle High School again presented cattle at the North
Coast National this year. The North Coast National had a
fantastic line up of 78 steers including 5 quality Kyogle
High School calves. The students in Year 11 Primary
Industries including Zoe Mackay, Karina Olive, Susie
Everitt, Jazmyn Unwin, Jade Cole, Dion Kenman, Martin
McMahon and Kristen Wimble of Year 9, ensured the
cattle were adequately
prepared for showing.
The cattle were led on
Thursday afternoon firstly
in the schools competition
where a total of 26 school
steers from local schools,
western schools and inter-
state schools, competed
in the Hoof competition.
Kyogle High School achieved 5th and 6
th placing in their
respective classes. Following this was the Opens Hoof
competition where our calves presented well though did
not place.
On Saturday afternoon the Hook (Carcase) results were
presented. Our Limousin calf which was donated by Mick
Carter of Kyogle placed 3rd. This was a satisfying result
for the students as he was up against 33 other steers in
the 360kg-430kg class. This Limousin calf also placed 2nd
in the Schools Carcase competition behind Holy Trinity
Inverell and was awarded overall Reserve Champion
School Calf.
On behalf of the students at Kyogle High School I would
like to thank Mick Carter, Paul and Wendy Carter and
Neil Warne for their donation of quality steers. Without
this support students would not have the chance to
present cattle worthy of showing at events such as
the North Coast National.

WEEK 5
WEEK 6
WEEK 7
A couple of weekends ago my husband and I were fortunate to be given tickets by our daughters to go and see The Seekers live at Strathpine in Brisbane. They are a remarkable group of Australians who have shown an amazing resilience in an industry that at times has been short-lived for some performers. They were doing the last concert to celebrate their 50 Year tour. They talked about writing with Paul Simon, John Lennon telling them they weren’t half bad and working with a small unknown group in England in days gone past…the Rolling Stones.
Our history and our legacy is important and we sometimes need to be reminded that everyone has a part to play in ensuring they leave the world a better place. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, it doesn’t have to be well known…they just need to think about being compassionate, kinder or making some-one else’s life better.
As Year 12 come towards the end of their exams and are thinking of their future, I’d like to thank Raema Perkins and her team for the difference they make every year to the lives of our students sitting their HSC. I look forward to seeing our Year 12 in all their finery at the formal.
This will be my last newsletter for some time. I would like to thank the staff, students and community for their support in raising great Kyogle High School students. We are committed to always improving on the work we do and this has been made easier by the community of Kyogle. I hope that I am leaving Kyogle High School in a better place from when I came. I am so proud of the staff and students and will miss them. I look forward to catching up in the future. Gae Masters will be relieving in the Principal position and I am sure you will support her as you have supported me. In the words written by Bruce Woodley (for the
young ones…a member of The Seekers)
“We are one,
but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We’ll share a dream
And sing with one voice,
I am, you are,
We are Australian”
All the best.

Principal’s Report From the Deputy’s Desk
Term 4 is always a busy time of the year with HSC exams, formals, end of year examinations for the junior school and the wrap up of the great extra-curricular programs we have running such as KEEP and the Oral Portfolios. The oral portfolios have been a great success for our Year 10 students who have gained valuable skills in goal setting, reflection, organisation, decision making and communication. This program will conclude with Year 10 students presenting a selection of their academic achievements throughout the year to a panel of teachers, students, community members and parent representatives on Thursday 4 or 11 December. KEEP students are also busy working on their Personal Interest Project at Kyogle Public School and these will be presented at Kyogle Public at 4pm on Monday 8 December. I am sure I am joined with the school community wishing Mrs Silcock all the best in her position at Alstonville High School. She will be back for our Year 12 Formal and hopefully other important occasions in our school calendar.

Name: Mikailah Piggott Year: 10 Sport: Athletics
Why is Mikailah a Kyogle High Sports Star? Mikailah or as her friends like to call her ‘Mok’, has been selected as this week’s Kyogle High Sports Star for her continued effort to represent the school and the North Coast at state level in athletics over the past four years. Mikailah started running competitively in Kindergarten and credits her Mum for getting her into the sport to burn up some energy as she was (and still is) a very energetic individual. To get to state level athletics once is an amazing accomplishment, but Mok has achieved this three times now, attending in Years 7, 9 and 10 and has kindly taken the time to answer a couple of our questions.
What are your best achievements in Athletics? In 2009 I was selected as the Kyogle Primary School Sports Person of the Year. Also in Year 7 I came 5
th in the state for my age group in the 100m sprint.
How much training per a week are you involved in? What sort of diet do you have to have with these sports? I train twice a week under Larry Condon and also run twice a week at home. Now that its warmer I have also been participating in Point Scores at the pool and swimming laps each week for general fitness. I usually eat anything and everything, but when racing I like to have a banana before the race for an energy hit. I have been known to have a pie after a race for a bit of a treat.
What are your future sporting goals? I want to continue on with athletics and hopefully make it to the Olympics. I would also like to put all my training
knowledge towards being a personal trainer one day too.
Who inspires you to run and compete? Sally Pearson motivates because she has done so well and also because I’m starting to learn hurdles at the moment and that’s what she is really good at. Also Usain Bolt because he is so fast and he is always doing inspirational things like helping others who are in need.
As you’ve just read, Mikailah has certainly represented her school and the broader North Coast well over the years. We would like to wish Mikailah all the best in her efforts to achieve her sporting goals in the future. If you know of anyone who has had outstanding success in sport recently or you yourself would like to share your sporting accomplishments, please make a nomination at the PDHPE staffroom. Each KHS Sports Star that gets published in the newsletter receives a $5.00 canteen voucher for their achievements.
CAREERS CORNER YEAR 7 Thirty one Year 7 students attended the Southern Cross University Unibound program “Uni Opens Your World” on October 16. The program for the day consisted of all of the schools in the Unibound program attending talks by university personnel including a presentation on Storytelling. Kyogle students linked with Lismore High and attended smaller workshops; these included a hands on Aboriginal Dance presentation where the students were split into groups of males and females and learnt the respective moves which when put together produced a traditional Aboriginal dance. Overall it was an enjoyable day allowing the students to have a hands on interactive introduction to university. YEAR 9 The Year 9 SCU Unibound Residential will be held on November 11 and 12. Transport information will be sent out this week. If you are able to help transport students to the university and/or transport them back to Kyogle, please let Mrs Riesinger know. YEAR 10 The Indigenous Tourism course is in its second week. This course has enabled Year 10 students to learn about the Tourism industry with an Indigenous perspective. The final component of the course is a three day camp to Lake Ainsworth on November 19-21. HSC All My Own Work It is a requirement of the Board of Studies for all students to complete 5 modules; Scholarship Principles and Practices, Acknowledging Sources, Plagiarism, Copyright and Working with Others. The students will be given two booklets; an information booklet and a work booklet. They will complete this program in class, keeping the information booklet for future reference. This will be completed by November 17. Barista Course—Permission notes will be distributed by November 7. Year 11 Approximately 25 students will be attending SCU Senior Schools Day on October 30.
Year 12 2015 Confirmation of Entry forms will be sent home for parent signatures by 14 November. Please read
these carefully and make any amendments if required and return by 21 November.

Christmas Trivia Night

This Trivia Night will be the school’s major fundraiser for the 2015 school year and funds raised go towards supporting student leadership opportunities. Tickets can be purchased from Kyogle High School office or at Gateway Office Supplies.
Kyogle gets a GRIP!
On the 27th of October a number of students had the opportunity to attend the ‘Grip’ Leadership Conference. All the participating schools in attendance had the option of choosing two specialised interactive lectures. I at-tended ‘The Importance of Communication’, where we were given the job of writing a 30 second speech on the following: 1. Convincing the P & C to put Crocs in the school
uniform 2. Bringing back the dance craze of ‘Gangnam style’
and 3. Participating in the lunch time activity of ‘Digging to
China’. This was designed to teach us different techniques and the use of body language. The other class I attended was ‘Roles of leadership in different situations’. It was there that I learnt about the capabilities of different leadership styles, learning my limitation of my leadership style will help me in all my group decisions. And who could forget the ‘Loud Noise Boys’ who popped up in random intervals of the day to play games and make everybody relaxed and comfortable. With the ‘Boys’ we played a huge game of ‘Scissors, Paper, Rock’, charades (where we struggled to act as Humpty Dumpty), a mini dance party to a Taylor Swift song and an amusing spelling game. Overall it was an excellent day, I wish I had attended this day in previous years, and strongly encourage anyone and everyone to attend regardless of your leadership status. Thankyou to Mr McKee for a great day. Karlie Harris, Year 11
