This temple was founded by Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had brought Japan under unified rule in the Sengoku period. The temple includes some of the remains of Fushimi Castle. The Ko-dai-ji maki-e scroll, which hangs in the Shumidan, is a superb example of art in the Momoyama period.

This temple is one of subtem-ples of Kodai-ji and the garden was moved from Fushimi Castle. The images painted on the sliding doors (fusuma-e) by Hasegawa Tohaku have been designated as an Important Cultural Asset.

20 Kyoto Ryozen Gokoku Shrine C3

This 24-meter tall image of the Kannon deity was built to honor those who died in World War II. Inside is an image of an eleven-faced Buddhist deity, Sen-jyu Kannon Bosatsu, and a sculpture of

22 Ishibe-koji C2

Ishibe-koji is a narrow stone path that runs from Shimoga-wara-dori to “Nene-no-michi.” The path gives the appearance of a stone landscape with ele-ments of restaurants and inns surrounded by stone walls.

Built in 1970, this museum covers the historical times between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji Restora-tion, and displays the objects, images and models of peo-ple active at that time.

24 Hokan-ji Temple(Yasaka Pagoda) C2

38 Sanjusangen-do Temple( Rengeo-in temple) E1Tel: 075-561-0467 Entrance fee: ¥600. Open: 8:00 〜 17:00(11/16 〜 3/31: 9:00 〜 16:00). Reception is open until 30 minutes before closing. At 125 meters in length, this is the longest wooden building in the world. The principal image in the main hall is the Buddhist deity Kannon or Goddess of Mercy, and also there are 1001 thousand-armed images placed in this hall.

Tel: 075-561-4892 Open: 9:00 〜 17:00. This shrine was built by Taira-no-Kiyo-mori. It is famous for a huge camphor tree planted by Emperor Goshirakawa, and is the birthplace of Kyoto Noh.

The famous painting on fusuma has been attributed to Hasegawa Tohaku of the Hasegawa School and is representative of the artistic culture of the Momoyama period. The garden is one of Kyoto’s most famous.
