What are the advantages of the

metric units of measurement?

QUESTION 1

Page 3: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

1) The metric system is the international system of measurement.

The metric system has been adopted by most major countries around the world. By the mid-1970s, most countries had converted to the metric system or had plans to do so. Using the metric system just makes sense, in order to standardize measurement around the globe.

2) Neutral and universal

Starting with length, the meter was determined by the distance between two lines of latitude. This can be measured at any location on earth with the proper instruments.

Page 5: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

3) Decimal multiples

The metric system is decimal. The next larger unit is always 10 times as large, the next smaller always 1/10 as large. You don't have to remember 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, are there four pints in a quart or only two, etc. To convert, simply move the decimal point.

Page 6: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

4 ) Prefixes All derived units use a common set of

prefixes for each multiple. "Kilo" means 1000 whether it is used both for mass (kilogram) or length (kilometre).

The prefixes which come from the

Greek language (kilo, mega, giga) are multipliers and those with Latin origins (centi, milli) are divisors.

Page 7: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

5 ) Logical and exact system

The metric system was designed to be simple. When making measurements of all kinds, it is only necessary to know a few metric units. In all, there are only 7 base units in this system of measurement! Compared to the twenty base units found in the inch-pound system of measurement, it is much easier to remember.

QUESTION 2

Given that 1 mile =1.6 km. Use a calculator to verify that a

hectare is about 2.5 acres. Show all the steps in your

calculation.

Page 9: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

HINT First of all, we must find the

relationship between mile/km with acre/hectare.

Only then, we can prove that 1 hectare is about 2.5 acres.

Page 10: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

Solution..

Page 11: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

Step 1Information from the question

1 mile=1.6 km1 hectare=2.5 acres

Step 2Some facts about the units

1 mile = 1.6 km 1 mile² = 2.56 km²1 km² = 100 hectare2.56km² = 632.56 acres

Step 3Relation between km² and acre

2.56km² = 632.56 acres

1km² = 632.56 acres 2.56

= 247.09 acres

Step 4Unit conversion1 km² = 100 hectare = 247.09 acres

100 hectare = 247.09 acres 1 hectare = 247.09 acres 100 = 2.47 acres

So, 1 hectare = 2.5 acres is proven

QUESTION 3

Cullinan diamond, the largest diamond found in 1906 at the Premier Mine in S Africa, weighed 3106 carats. Estimate the weight of Cullinan diamond in pounds.

( Given that 1 carat = 200mg, 2.2 kg = 1lb )

Page 13: l. Nombor Tutorial 2(M 8)

Step 1Convert carat to mg1 carat = 200 mg3106 carat = 200 ×

3102 = 621200

mg

Step 2Convert mg to g & kg621200 mg ÷ 1000 = 621.2 g= 0.6212 kg

Step 3Convert kg to pound

( lb )( 1 kg = 2.2lb )

0.6212 x 2.2

= 1.36664 lb=1.367( 3 decimal places)
