Welcome to Peel Ports Liverpool2 News. The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you updated on the exciting development of Liverpool2; the UK’s new deep water container terminal. We will regularly share with you the construction progress, key milestones, commercial activity and other news.news.

IntroductionLiverpool2 is Peel Ports new deep water container terminal. When it opens for business in Q4 2015, Liverpool2 will be the UK’s most centrally located deep water container terminal. It will offer shipping lines a unique opportunity to connect larger vessels closer to the UK’s industrial, manufacturing and consumer heartland than any other UK port.

Accommodating 90% of the global container vessel fleet, Liverpool2 will enable the Port of Liverpool to berth two 13,500 TEU new Panamax vessels simultaneously. This creates the capacity to handle the next generation of container ships and empowers the Port of Liverpool to be the UK’s national gateway and transhipment hub for Ireland. The development will reaffirm Liverpool as the UK’s leading transatlantic port, whilst enabling direct market connections to the Americas, India, Far East, Caribbean, Mediterranean and the Baltics.

Key MilestonesCRANESPeel Ports have signed a multimillion pound deal with Shanghai based Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. (ZPMC) for its cranes requirements. ZPMC will initially supply five ship-to-shore (STS) megamax quay cranes and 12 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes (CRMGs) in phase 1 of the project and a further 3 three STS cranes and 10 CRMGs in phase 2. The contract is a major step forward in the construction of what will be one of Europe’s most advanced container facilities.

AUTOGATE TECHNOLOGY Our commitment to providing a fast and reliable service across the Port of Liverpool’s container offer is evidenced by our investment in advanced infrastructure and Kalmar SmartLane automation technology. The new technology will reduce waiting times and administration for hauliers, resulting in faster turnaround times.

David Huck, Port Director for Peel Ports Liverpool, said: “We operate in an increasingly competitive market and our customers require logistics solutions that reduce costs, carbon emissions and congestion. The continuing success of our company has always been driven by its ability to be forward-thinking, operating at the centre of the supply chain and offering flexible, agile and cost-effective solutions to our customers.”

Prime Minister’s Seal of ApprovalThe UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron made his first visit to the Liverpool2 site in June 2014. The Prime Minister had a tour of the construction site, and met with Peel Ports CEO Mark Whitworth to discuss the plans. Liverpool2 got the thumbs up with Mr Cameron saying:

“Liverpool2 will allow the biggest container ships in the world to unload their cargo via Merseyside. So many of the big containers ships come into southern ports such as Southampton and Tilbury. Yet so much of that freight is destined for the north of the country. This new terminal in Liverpool will ensure that freight can come directly to the North of England.”

Boosting Chinese and UK Relations

Our CEO; Mark Whitworth and Group Asset & Supply Chain Director; Gary Parkinson, recently visited Shanghai to formally sign the multi million pound contract for Liverpool2’s cranes with engineering firm Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. (ZPMC). ZPMC are supplying eight ship-to-shore (STS) megamax quay cranes and 22 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes (CRMGs).

The combined handling capacity of the STS cranes and CRMGs will dramatically increase the ports’ productivity and efficiency, delivering major benefits and cost savings for customers using the Port of Liverpool as their UK gateway.

Mr Whitworth said: This signing represents a significant investment for the long term and the most important investment at Port of Liverpool in the last 20 years. It will help position Liverpool2 as one of the fastest most efficient container ports in the world, allowing over 90% of the global fleet to be handled at Liverpool, making it a real game changer for shipping lines.

It’s a great pleasure to be here in Shanghai to sign this important agreement with ZPMC because it is a significant part of the transformation of Port of Liverpool. ZPMC are doing much more than supplying cranes. They are helping us to deliver a project aimed at changing the logistics flows in the UK, where the Port of Liverpool is currently the third largest container port and strategically important to trade with China.

The fleet of STS and CRMG cranes will be supported by state-of-the-art quayside facilities, best in class port and logistics solutions, including a fully integrated Navis N4 terminal operating system, Kalmar AutoGate and ABB equipment controls. Specialist engineers will provide round-the-clock operational support to ensure proactive and real-time service and maintenance, ensuring maximum productivity from the Liverpool2 terminal at all times.

As well as signing the £100million contract, Peel Ports’ Chief Executive Mark Whitworth toured ZPMC’s engineering facilities at Changxing and Nantong as part of a two-day visit to China.

The Liverpool Debate As part of the International Festival of Business, CONTAINERISATION International and Lloyd’s List hosted a ‘Liverpool Debate’ on June 16, supported by the Peel Ports Group.

The debate was hosted in the newly opened hotel 30 James Street; the former headquarters of the Titanic’s owner White Star Line and was attended by key industry leaders.

Our CEO Mark Whitworth sat on the panel alongside ACL’s Andrew Abbott, MacAndrews’ Mark Copsey and MDS Transmodal’s Mike Garratt. The debate focused on the future of Liverpool, as a port and a maritime hub against the backdrop of a rapidly changing global container shipping market.

Mark Whitworth, answered questions about Liverpool2 and how Liverpool could reestablish itself on a global platform. The Port of Liverpool had strong votes of confidence from existing customers ACL and ICL, with both companies CEO’s praising the port for its efficiency and customer service.

The lively debate also covered developments including the widening of the Panama Canal, increasing ship size, controls on sulphur emissions and vessel-sharing agreements.

The event was followed by a ferry trip on the River Mersey to see

the Liverpool2 development site first hand.
