BackgroundModernIranianclassicalmusiccommonlyusestwoaccidentalsymbolsformicrotones.Theyarefrequentlyreferredtoas“quartertones”( ەدرپ عــ"ر ),althoughthetonesarenotexactlyatequaltemperament,causingsomeexpertstoavoidthetermquartertoneforthem.ThesymbolsthemselveswereinventedinearlytwentiethcenturybyColonelAli-NaqiVaziri,whowasthekeyplayerinformalizingIranianclassicalmusic anditsmodalsystems,aswellasadaptingWesternmusicalnotationforit.ThecharactersaresimilarinfunctiontoencodedcharactersU+1D132MUSICALSYMBOLQUARTERTONESHARPandU+1D133MUSICALSYMBOLQUARTERTONEFLAT,whicharejustonestyleamongvariousnotationsusedforsuchquartertones.(ThereisawiderangeofaccidentalsusedinWesternmusicnotyetencodedinUnicode.SeeSpreadbury2019formoreinformationandanextendedlist.)TheIraniansymbolsaredifferentfromthetwoencodedquartertonesinappearance,usage,andtheirexacttonalvalue.
