1. Why did tourism grow in the Lake District
1. In 1951 it became a national park, preserving some of the most stunning scenery in the UK.
2. In the 1950’s and 60’s Wainwright wrote a guide books about the Lakes which attracted people to explore the area.
3. Accessibility, large urban areas like Manchester and Liverpool are easy drives to the Lakes.
4. Opportunities to walk up some of Britain's highest mountains e.g. Cat Bells
5. Beatrix Potters family had a summer holiday home (Hill Top Farm) in the Lake District
