MAY: I GOT THIS! Carole Dweck tells us that the path to growth mindset is a journey, not a proclamation! This month Ms. Dweck discusses the role of self-talk in developing a growth mindset. Imagine a very busy day, everything that is taking place is challenging and by the end of the day, you sit back in your chair and let out a big sigh of relief. PHEW! You reflect on your day and come to the conclusion that you are feeling satisfied with a hard day’s work and just as you determine this, your fixed mindset swoops in and says “but was it good enough?” When children are very young, you often hear them talking to themselves and trying to make sense of their world. This is called “private speech”. As they get older, their private speech turns to an inner monologue or self talk. It is important to acknowledge to children that you know that they have an inner voice in their head. Children are often not aware that other people have inner voices as well. Self talk is critical to managing mindsets. Imagine participating in a badminton tournament and the person that you are matched against is tall, has long arms and legs and doesn’t seem to need to move much to reach the corners of the court. Your inner voice pipes up and says ”There’s no way that I’m going to beat him/her.” (Fixed mindset) What you need to do is find a response that is based in growth mindset—”I’ll work hard to try and win the game.” “No matter what, I’ll learn from this experience.” “Playing against tough competition helps me grow my ability.” One strategy for dealing with the inner voice is to give this alter ego a name—Nervous Nellie, Debbie Downer etc. Beyonce did the same thing with her stage persona Sasha Fierce. This is one way to gain control over the inner voice. Just like we want our kids to tell a bully to go away and leave them alone, allowing people to name the fixed mindset gives them a tool to use when they respond to fixed mindset messages. Another strategy for taking control over fixed mindset is by developing a catchphrase or mantra that you can repeat to drown out the inner voice. “I know I can do this!” “I got this!” The Growth Mindset Coach by Annie Brock and Heather Hundley La Barriere Crossings School 245 Le Maire Street Winnipeg, MB.

PHEW! You reflect on your day and come to the conclusion that you are feeling satisfied with a hard day’s work and just as you determine this, your fixed mindset swoops in and says “but was it good enough?”

When children are very young, you often hear them talking to themselves and trying to make sense of their world.

Your inner voice pipes up and says ”There’s no way that I’m going to beat him/her.” (Fixed mindset) What you need to do is find a response that is based in growth mindset—”I’ll work hard to try and win the game.” “No matter what, I’ll learn from this experience.” “Playing against tough competition helps me grow my ability.”

One strategy for dealing with the inner voice is to give this alter ego a name—Nervous Nellie, Debbie Downer etc.

“I know I can do this!” “I got this!”

April was spent getting ready for LBC’s Spring Concert. Students began to realize the effort that goes into one of these productions and that last minute “cramming” does not make up for steady growth throughout the year.

May will be exciting as we have loaned African drums from La Salle School! Students will learn a variety of drumming patterns and then be challenged with holding their own part as we layer in other parts. Once students have a solid foun-dation of skills, they will be able to fulfill the creative aspects of the Music Curriculum by composing their own pieces!

Badminton season is in full swing here in the gymnasium. Gr. 7/8 students are participating in three tournaments this season, with the culminating SRSD divisional tournament taking place on Friday, May 4th. Many Grade 5 & 6 students have also had the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular Badminton, through intramural play during lunch recess on Mondays and Tuesdays. Staff and Gr. 7/8 Basketball team members, took part in two exhibition Basketball games, during noon hour this spring. Everyone had fun, with the staff showing their athletic prowess by winning both games. Thanks to everyone who got involved and made both games enjoyable! West side schools in the Seine River Athletics Association will be participating in a Gr. 7/8 Friendship Soccer Tournament, being held at the Niverville Soccer Complex on May 18th, during the school day. We are looking forward to an fun-filled (hopefully sunny) day. On March 23, Mr. Ammeter, Mr. Reimer and Mr. Fast found and removed 85 Badminton Birdies from the top of the gymnasium light fixtures, vents, fans and scoreboard. The gymnasium ceiling looks quite different as a result!

Hello, my name is Keion Vergara. I am the creator of MorseBot. MorseBot is a cell phone except you’re left without a screen. The way you use it to tap out a message translated from English to Morse code. And you learn your way to navigate menus, calculate and even send SMS text messages through Morse code! I created MorseBot for people who are deaf-blind because I know that communication is hard for them unless they are physically communicating via braille, Sign language, moon language, etc. so that’s why I created it. MorseBot packs a ton of features like: A calculator, the ability to send and receive text messages, etc. At the beginning of the year we started a class called Genius Hour; everyone in the class gets a chance to create something new that benefits people, or change something that already exists. I had a great interest in learning about those who are deaf and blind, and some of the challenges they face on a daily basis. Through my research, which included an interview with someone who is deaf and blind, I found out that communication is possible, but nothing has really been invented to help those who want to communicate freely. So, I created MorseBot, a living and working cell phone that focuses on helping those who lack the ability to communicate freely. On March 23

rd I was given the opportunity to pitch my idea to the

producers of Dragons Den. I am currently waiting to hear back if I will be on the student segment portion of the show. From here, my goal is to possibly patent my idea and to make it a product that can be purchased by those who could benefit from the MorseBot.
