Ants Ants have two eyes called compound eyes. Compound eyes are eyes that contain other, smaller eyes. An ant generally lives 45-60 days. An ant’s sense of touch and smell are both delivered through its antennae. Strong jaws are housed in the ant’s head. The ant’s jaws have often been compared to the open and shut sideways motion of scissors.

Ants Ants have two stomachs, each located in their abdomen. One stomach contains food for the ant. The other stomach holds food for other ants! An ant’s body is covered with a hard exterior, called an exoskeleton. This outside, hard covering is protection for the insect. Four life stages comprise the life cycle of the ant. They are egg, larvae, pupa, and adult.

Ants Over 10,000 species of ants have been identified and grouped by scientists. Queen ants can be identified in each colony. Queen ants lay ant eggs. Young ants are protected by worker ants. Carpenter Ants Carpenter ants are considered to be among the most difficult of ants to control. They are often large and dark, almost black, in color. If a carpenter ant swarm is seen during the spring, a colony is sure to be detected close by in a wooden structure. Carpenter ants eat through and eventually hollow out wood. They then use this space for nesting. This species of ant like all types of wood, yet prefer moist wood.

Beekeepers Beekeepers are individuals who keep bees and farm their products of honey and beeswax. Many beekeepers keep up to 75 hives in one location. Beekeepers learn to move very slowly and carefully around the bees to prevent bee stings, as bees are not as bothered by slow and methodical movement. Beekeepers wear protective veils covering their face, head, and neck when working with the bees. Protective clothing tied together at the wrists and ankles and gloves also help to reduce the possibility of stings.

1. How does a beekeeper move around the bees? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 2.
