Este fin de semana, en el evangelio, celebramos la fiesta de bodas en Caná. Me
gustaría compartir con ustedes uno de los comentarios del Papa San Juan Pablo
II sobre este evangelio.
Al comienzo del relato, el evangelista nos dice que "la Madre de Jesús estaba
allí" (Jn 2: 1) y, como si quisiera sugerir que su presencia fue la razón de la
invitación de la pareja a Jesús y sus discípulos. Agrega: "Jesús también fue
invitado al matrimonio, con sus discípulos" (Jn 2: 2). Con estos comentarios,
Juan parece indicar que en Caná, como en el evento fundamental de la
Encarnación, es María quien presenta al Salvador.
El significado y el papel de la presencia de la Santísima Virgen se hacen
evidentes cuando se acaba el vino. Como ama de casa hábil y sabia,
inmediatamente se da cuenta e interviene para que la alegría de nadie se vea
empañada y, sobre todo, para ayudar a la pareja de recién casados en
dificultades.
Volviéndose a Jesús con las palabras: "no tienen vino" (Jn 2, 3), María le
expresa su preocupación por esta situación, esperando que él la resuelva. Más
precisamente, según algunos exegetas, su Madre espera una señal extraordinaria,
ya que Jesús no tenía vino a su disposición.
La elección hecha por María, que quizás podría haber obtenido el vino necesario
en otra parte, muestra el valor de su fe, ya que hasta ese momento Jesús no había
hecho milagros, ni en Nazaret ni en su vida pública.
De esa manera, ella precede en la fe a los discípulos que, como dice Juan,
creerían después del milagro: Jesús “manifestó su gloria; y sus discípulos
creyeron en él ”(Jn 2, 11). Así, María fortaleció su fe obteniendo este signo
milagroso.
Con la expresión: “Oh, mujer, ¿qué tienes que hacer conmigo?”, Jesús pretende
poner la cooperación de María en el nivel de la salvación que, al involucrar a su
fe y esperanza, requiere que ella vaya más allá de su papel natural de madre.
De mayor importancia es la razón que da Jesús: "Mi hora aún no ha llegado" (Jn
2, 4).
Jesús le da a María para comprender que de ahora en adelante ya no depende de
ella, sino que debe tomar la iniciativa para hacer la obra de su Padre. Luego,
María se abstiene dócilmente de insistir con él y se dirige a los sirvientes,
diciéndoles que le obedezcan.
En cualquier caso, su confianza en su Hijo es recompensada. Jesús, a quien ella
ha dejado totalmente libre para actuar, hace el milagro, reconociendo el valor y
la docilidad de su Madre: "Jesús les dijo: 'Llenen los frascos con agua'". Y los
llenaron hasta el borde ”(Jn 2, 7). Así su obediencia también ayuda a procurar
vino en abundancia.
La petición de María: "Haz lo que te diga", mantiene su valor siempre oportuno
para los cristianos de todas las edades y está destinada a renovar su maravilloso
efecto en la vida de todos. Es una exhortación a confiar sin dudar, especialmente
cuando uno no entiende el significado o el beneficio de lo que Cristo pide.
Como en el relato de la mujer cananea (Mt 15: 24-26), el aparente rechazo de
Jesús exalta la fe de la mujer, de modo que las palabras de su Hijo, "Mi hora aún
no ha llegado", junto con la obra del primer milagro, Demostrar la gran fe de la
Madre y el poder de su oración.
El episodio de la boda en Cana nos exhorta a ser valientes en la fe y a
experimentar en nuestras vidas la verdad de las palabras del Evangelio: "Pide y
te será dada" (Mt 7: 7; Lk 11: 9).

Hospitalidad/Hospitality El desayuno después de las Misas estará suspendido
hasta que estemos de regreso en el edificio de la
Iglesia. Por lo tanto, el primero, segundo y último
fin de semana del mes no tendremos pan, donas, o

pended until we are back in the Church building

This weekend, in the gospel, we celebrate the wedding feast at Cana. I would
like to share with you one of the commentaries of Pope Saint John Paul II on
this gospel.
At the beginning of the account the Evangelist tells us that “the Mother of Jesus
was there” (Jn 2:1), and, as if to suggest that her presence was the reason for the
couple's invitation to Jesus and his disciples. He adds “Jesus also was invited to
the marriage, with his disciples” (Jn 2:2). With these remarks, John seems to
indicate that at Cana, as in the fundamental event of the Incarnation, it is Mary
who introduces the Savior.
The meaning and role of the Blessed Virgin’s presence become evident when
the wine runs out. As a skilled and wise housewife, she immediately notices and
intervenes so that no one’s joy is marred and, above all, to help the newly mar-
ried couple in difficulty.
Turning to Jesus with the words: “they have no wine” (Jn 2:3), Mary expresses
her concern to him about this situation, expecting him to solve it. More precise-
ly, according to some exegetes, his Mother is expecting an extraordinary sign,
since Jesus had no wine at his disposal.
The choice made by Mary, who could perhaps have obtained the necessary wine
elsewhere, shows the courage of her faith, since until that moment Jesus had
worked no miracles, either in Nazareth or in his public life.
In that way she precedes in faith the disciples who, as John says, would believe
after the miracle: Jesus “manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in
him” (Jn 2:11). Thus, Mary strengthened their faith by obtaining this miraculous
sign.
With the expression: “O woman, what have you to do with me?”, Jesus intends
to put Mary’s co-operation on the level of salvation which, by involving her
faith and hope, requires her to go beyond her natural role of mother.
Of much greater import is the reason Jesus gives: “My hour has not yet
come” (Jn 2:4).
Jesus gives Mary to understand that henceforth he no longer depends on her, but
must take the initiative for doing his Father’s work. Then Mary docilely refrains
from insisting with him and instead turns to the servants, telling them to obey
him.
In any case her trust in her Son is rewarded. Jesus, whom she has left totally free
to act, works the miracle, recognizing his Mother’s courage and docility: “Jesus
said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water’. And they filled them up to the brim” (Jn
2:7). Thus their obedience also helps to procure wine in abundance.
Mary’s request: “Do whatever he tells you”, keeps its ever timely value for
Christians of every age and is destined to renew its marvelous effect in every-
one's life. It is an exhortation to trust without hesitation, especially when one
does not understand the meaning or benefit of what Christ asks.
As in the account of the Canaanite woman (Mt 15:24-26), Jesus’ apparent re-
fusal exalts the woman’s faith, so that her Son’s words, “My hour has not yet
come”, together with the working of the first miracle, demonstrate the Mother's
great faith and the power of her prayer.
The episode of the wedding at Cana urges us to be courageous in faith and to
experience in our lives the truth of the Gospel words: “Ask, and it will be given
you” (Mt 7:7; Lk 11:9).
