Slavery
Began in about 1760 BC
Portugal was the first slave market created for the sale of imported African slaves
The first slaves were brought to Portugal from northern Mauritania
Traditionally, the southern whites bought the blacks as slaves
All slaves had to listen to their master.
In relation to the novel,Both have racial discrimination
However, the novel was quite modern, thus there was no more slavery, and the black was being innocently accused.
In actual slavery, the blacks had to obey their master and were not treated fairly.
Civil War
Started because of the disagreement over whether to abolish slaveryNorthern states wanted to abolish slavery
Southern states were afraid to lose control over slavery

Civil War
Abraham Lincoln proclaimed war against the South
For for he freedom and rights of blacks

Jim Crow Laws
A law that seperated the blacks and whites
It was the state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965.
Gave whites an advantage over the blacks in aspects like education and job opportunities etc.
Thus the blacks were very unhappy.
In relation to the novel,Tom Robinson was accused by a white of raping, and even though he was innocent he was jailed.
The Civil Rights Movement
It was a worldwide political movement for equality
Occurring between 1950 and 1980
NAACP member Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat at the front of the "colored section" of a bus to a white passenger, defying a southern custom of the time.
James Meredith becomes the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Violence and riots surrounding the incident cause President Kennedy to send 5,000 federal troops.
The Civil Rights Movement
President John F Kennedy supported the movement.
In the end, the Africans Americans were to be treated asequal as whites.
In relation to the novel,Atticus defended Tom Robinson, just like the movement, which fought for equal treatment of the blacks.
Montgomery Bus Boycott and Scottsboro Trials
Both were due to the racial discrimination of blacks as the transport system was biased
In the novel and Scottsboro Trials, both blacks were accused of rape that they did not commit.
Traits of a True Southern Belle and Southern Gentleman
A southern Belle is an archetype for a young woman of the American Old South's upper class.
A southern gentleman are respected and from the upper class
Harper Lee
Born on April 28, 1926
An American author best known for her 1960 Pulitzer Prize winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird
Assisted her close friend, Truman Capote, in his research for the book In Cold Blood.
TKAMB was important to her as,It was her only book published
