Protector® Laboratory Hoods are available in widths from four to sixteen feet. Specialty hoodsas small as 28" wide and special applicationhoods, such as walk-in hoods (shown above), areall standard Labconco products.

The material lining the inside of the hood iscritical, and should be selected based on the types and concentrations ofsubstances to be handled. Many Labconco hoods feature specially formulatedfiberglass reinforced polyester. Labconco’s Basic Hoods are a great choice for those areaswhere safety ventilation is sometimes required, but achemical fume hood is not in constant use. To give you the flexibility you need, Labconco offers a rangeof wall- and bench-mounted water purification systems aswell as a mobile stand, with the added convenience of ahandy dispensing gun.

Selection of a water purification system is based upon thetypes of contaminants (i.e., particulates, dissolved inorganics,dissolved organics, microorganisms and pyrogens) mostcommonly found in the available water supply as well as theprimary applications. Labconco has designed specializedwater purification systems for general chemistry, analyticaland life science applications.

The SteamScrubber® and FlaskScrubber® Glassware Washers areengineered to achieve a dual objective: to deliver washing anddrying suitable for analytical research techniques whileproviding the careful handling needed to keep laboratoryglassware in good condition. The SteamScrubber is designedprimarily for wide-mouthed glassware, such as beakers, whilethe FlaskScrubber is designed primarily for narrow-neckedglassware, such as volumetric flasks.

. Labconco takes tap water to a new level ofpurity and cleanliness. Our WaterPro Softener pre-treats tap water for use inour WaterPro RO Station or our SteamScrubber or FlaskScrubber. OurWaterPro PS Polishing Stations polish this RO-purified water to Type I puritylevel for a variety of laboratory uses. RO-purified water may be used as thefinal rinse in our glassware washers for contaminant-free glassware.

ome laboratory procedures require working with a substance in a highly concentrated or dried form.Three of the most effective laboratory techniquesinclude freeze drying, centrifugal concentration and evaporation.

In freeze drying, or lyophilization, water or someother solvent is removed from a frozen product by a process called sublimation. Sublimation occurswhen a frozen liquid goes directly to the gaseous

state without passingthrough the liquidphase.

Evaporation isaccomplished byapplying heat to vaporizeexcess liquid, althoughgreat care must be takento ensure that the heatdoes not interfere withthe substance’sbiological and chemicalstructure and activities.To help accomplish this,mechanically-createdvortex action is used toincrease surface area forfaster evaporation.

Similarly, centrifugalconcentration involves spinning small, solvent-basedsamples to quickly reduce volumes. All threetechniques rely on the use of vacuum to maximizethe migration of solvent molecules from thesamples, leaving the concentrated solutes behind.
