Introduction to Vacuum PumpsVacuum pumps are designed to pump air or gases at pressures below atmospheric pressure. Working atbelow atmospheric pressure facilitates many tasks and research activities in laboratories. These rangefrom simple filtration to complex distillation and many others.

Due to their high flow, deep vacuum capability oil-sealed rotary vane pumps have traditionally been verypopular in laboratories as they are capable of handling most pumping requirements. However, due to thefact that vapour will condense in the pump, careful selection of traps, accessories and diligentmaintenance is required to ensure trouble-free use.

Not all tasks or experiments within the laboratory need high flow and deep vacuum and there arealternative pumping technologies that may be more suitable. Please talk to our Technical Office on01342 826836 if you require assistance.

Oil sealed rotary vane pumpsBest suited to applications that require high flow rates and pressures below 1 mbar. Traps and accessoriesare always required. Talk to our Technical Office if you require assistance.

Diaphragm pumpsThese are oil-free pumping mechanisms available in two forms, one for pumping air and one forpumping chemicals. A typical use of a chemical version would be for rotary evaporation.

Piston pumpsThese are oil-free pumping mechanisms that generally have a higher compression ratio than diaphragmpumps, and provide good flow characteristic when used in such applications as filtration, cell harvestingand vacuum oven drying. Not suitable where aggressive vapours or solvents are involved.

Scroll pumpsA sophisticated oil-free design that gives high flow rates and deep vacuum of the same order as rotaryvane pumps. Your application may require the use of a chemical trap.

1. Select appropriate approximate vacuum for the application

2. Is chemical resistance required (yes or no)?

3. Select flow rate if appropriate. Approx flow rate should be 1–2 times the volume to be evacuated (litres per min) except for filtration, where there the system is not gas tight, use x4.Examples: a. Rotary evaporation of 5L flask plus condenser plus tubing (probable 12L in total),

therefore =12x2=24L/min pump flow rate:b. Vacuum oven of 50L capacity 50x2=100 L/min pump flow rate: c. Filtration of 4x1L flasks on manifold plus tubing (probable 5L in total), therefore

5x4=20L/min pump flow rate.

4. Do not ignore features for ease of handling i.e. catchpot, gauge etc

Bigger is not better as too large a vacuum pump tends to increase the likelihood of condensable vapours bypassingthe cold trap and migrating into vacuum pump oil. For instance, a -55°C system condenser will not condense outAcetonitrile vapour causing vapour to condense in oil.

All elements of the liquid pathway are chemically inert,allowing a wide range of reagents to be used and for sterilisation by Virkon.

It is easy to remove small amounts of excess liquids from object slides, petri dishes, well plates etc,through various kinds of pipettes which are inserted into the pipette carrier of the hand piece. XDS and XDS-C Dry Vacuum Scroll PumpsCompletely dry, lubricant-free vacuum pumps with vapour handling. The innovative XDS and XDS-C drypumps were designed by BOC Edwards to provide vacuum totally free of lubricants. Bearings are isolatedfrom the vacuum environment by a patented bearing shield. Uniquely, by using a scroll mechanism thereare no bearings, bearing purges, grease or oil under vacuum. Controllable gas ballast is standard andmakes the XDS and XDS-C suitable for pumping condensed vapours.

These pumps are portable, air-cooled and cost effective. Power consumption is very low and, typically,no other utilities are required. Low vibration and noise levels make them ideal for laboratory use. TheXDS pumps are not supplied with a power cord.

Self-Drying, Continuous-Cleaning Vacuum PumpsCorrosion resistant, diaphragm, oil-freeKNF’s innovative Laboport Self Drying Diaphragm Vacuum Pumps are ideal for applications wheresaturated vapours are being evacuated. This usually causes liquids to collect in the pump, as encounteredwith vacuum ovens, rotary evaporators and gel dryers. Unless removed from the pump they increaseprocessing time and reduce efficiency and pump life. The Laboport Self Drying Pumps cycle every fewminutes, removing accumulated moisture instantly without disturbing the vacuum process.

The unique self-drying process removes accumulated condensate from the pump and restores efficiencywhilst the pump is operating. During the cycle the drying system solenoid opens, permitting air to enterthe evacuated pump head. As a result of the increase in pressure in the pump head, the inlet valve of thefirst stage pump head closes, thus preserving the vacuum level within the evacuated chamber. Bycontrast, the outlet valve, and both valves of the second stage pump head, open automatically causingcondensation to be expelled at high speed. The solenoid valve closes again and the pump now evacuatesthe chamber at full capacity. The drying operation is precisely controlled by an adjustable electronic timer,and set as required.

KNF Laboport pumps feature chemically resistant materials (e.g. PTFE, FFPM) in contact with the gasstream. There are no metal parts to corrode. KNF’s moulded structural diaphragm and multiport designensure reliable vacuum performance.

Diaphragm PumpsVacuubrand diaphragm pumps are totally oil free, mechanical vacuum pumps. Two basic versions are available:

Standard versionThe materials of the wetted parts are made of aluminium, FPM (e.g. Viton®) and polyamide. This isadequate for less aggressive gases and vapours.

Chemistry versionAll wetted parts of the chemistry version are made of chemically resistant fluorinated plastic materials, e.g.PTFE-sandwich diaphragms or ECTFE (e.g., Halar®) clamping discs with stainless steel core. This makes theChemistry version ideal for rotary evaporation, distillation, vacuum concentration, gel drying etc.

Vacuubrand diaphragm pumps offer high flow rates at low vacuum, excellent reliability and vacuumstability. They are inexpensive and simple to service and maintain. LVS Series, Laboratory Vacuum SystemsThe latest solutions for solvent handling in the laboratory, LVS units are based on the MPC range ofchemically resistant diaphragm pumps with solvent containment condensers. They are available with orwithout control. There are four control options available:

None: The vacuum level is not controlled.

Standard Valve: The vacuum pump operates continuously and the process vacuum level is controlledby a chemically resistant solenoid valve. Set points can be preset, altered during the process, ordetermined automatically using the boiling point finding facility.

Management: The pump starts and stops automatically to maintain vacuum within your set range.Ideal for operating vacuum lines and networks where service intervals are greatly extended.

Ecoflex: The pump’s flow rate is automatically varied to maintain the set point by matching the vapourload. Set points can be preset, altered during the process, or determined automatically using the boilingpoint finding facility. Ideal for rotary evaporators, where process times can be reduced by up to 30%.Service intervals are greatly extended. VCZ324 controller included.

Peristaltic Pump Drives and HeadsThe Heidolph range includes 6 drives, 4 peristaltic pump heads and 3 multi-channel pump heads.Peristaltic pump drives are available with and without serial and analogue interfaces. They are ideal foraggressive, abrasive or corrosive solvents and sterilised media. Flow rates from 0.3ml up to 3,644ml perminute are available (H20), as are double pump head systems.

PD 5001 and PD 5006 Pump Drives These peristaltic pump drives are suitable for standard applications; they have electronic speed control(accuracy ±2%), large dials for speed setting, protection to IP30 and can be stacked (up to 3 pumpdrives). Flow can be clockwise or counter clockwise.

The PD 5001 provides flow rates from 0.7 to 729ml per minute with a speed range of 10 to 120rpm. Itcan also be equipped with two pumps heads (SP quick and SP quick d) or with a multi-channel pumphead (C4, C8 or C12 - an adaptor is required but not supplied). Multi-channel flow rates are from 0.01to 336ml/min.

Model PD 5006 provides flow rates from 3.3 to 3,644ml per minute with a speed range of 50 to 600rpm.It is suitable for any of the single pumps heads, however it is not suitable for the use of multi-channelpump heads.

PD 5101 and PD 5106 Pump Drives These models are designed for more demanding applications. Both pump drives have an analogueinterface for speed range setting, direction of rotation and start/stop function. They have electronicspeed control (accuracy ±0.5%), large dials for speed setting, protection to IP55 and can be stacked (upto 3 pump drives). Flow can be clockwise or counter clockwise and the filling and emptying of tubing canbe accelerated by a push-button.

The PD 5101 provides flow rates from 0.3 to 729ml per minute with a speed range of 5 to 120rpm. They feature a four-digit display for electronicspeed setting, electronic speed control (accuracy ±0.5%), protection to IP 55 and they can be stacked (upto 3 pump drives). The four-digit display is also used for flow rate setting, interval dosing and pausesetting. Flow can be clockwise or counter clockwise and the filling and emptying of tubing can beaccelerated by a push-button. Other features include:

■ Calibration of flow rate and flow volume ■ Microprocessor controlled drive ■ Flow rates of the pump heads in combination with the various tubing are saved in the program

to enable direct digital readout of flow rate ■ In addition to the flow rate readout, it is possible to pre-select a dosing volume ■ Interval dosing is possible by entering a time interval

Multi-Channel Peristaltic Pump Heads There is a choice of three multi-channel pump heads which accept 4, 8 or 12 cassettes. The feed rate ofeach channel can be adjusted by using different tubing dimensions. Tubing is available in a variety ofmaterials and sizes and can be changed easily. Other features include 4 or 8 rollers for minimal pulsationand cassettes may be changed during operation. Cassettes must be ordered separately.

C4 Multi-Channel Pump Head The C4 pump head has 8 rollers for low-pulsation and accepts 4 small cassettes. Cassettes may bepartially used and click easily into place.

C8 Multi-Channel Pump Head This model has a 4-roller design and accepts 8 medium or 4 large cassettes. Medium and large sizecassettes may be used together. Cassettes may be partially used and click easily into place.

C12 Multi-Channel Pump Head The C12 pump head has 8 rollers for low-pulsation and accepts 12 small cassettes. Cassettes may bepartially used and click easily into place. Built-in reduction gear allows feeding of smallest quantities.
