Standard Purification StepsAll systems in the Milli-Q® range employ a 3-step purification process:

Step 1Plug-in Q-Gard™ purification packs are tailored to the feed-water source to optimise the performanceof downstream purification media to ensure consistent results. Step 2 Quantum application-specific cartridges remove ionic and organic contaminants down to trace levels.Step 3Final purification of ultrapure water is carried out at the point-of-use by pharmaceutical-grade, absolute0.22 µm Millipak membrane filter that is recommended for most analytical applications.

Additional purification steps are included in certain systems aimed at optimising the ultrapure waterquality for particular applications:

UV Photo-oxidation (UV module)The ultra-violet photo-oxidation process (UV at 254 and 185nm) used in the Milli-Q® Gradient, Synthesisand Element systems can effectively carry out the destruction of organic molecules, to reduce TOC levelsto <5ppb, improving consistency and sensitivity in applications such as HPLC, IC, solid-phase extractionand UV spectroscopy.

Elix® Water Purification Systems Elix® systems combine proven reverse osmosis (RO) technology with Millipore’s patented continuousElectrodeionisation (EDI) process to produce consistently pure Type II water directly from a potable tapwater feed. Elix® systems combine three purification stages in one compact unit: Primary purification viathe Progard pre-treatment pack; secondary purification via a high-recovery reverse osmosis unit, whichremoves 95 - 99% of inorganic ions and 99% of dissolved organics (MW>100 Dalton); and final purifi-cation by the Elix® module, which results in product water of analytical grade purity.

Elix® systems eliminate the drawbacks of traditional techniques. Unlike standard deionisation, there isnever a need to replace or externally regenerate resins and there is no interruption in service for resinexchanges. That is because a small electric current within the Elix® module continuously regenerates theElix® system resins. Elix® systems also eliminate the labour-intensive cleaning, high water use and highenergy costs which are associated with stills.

Elix® systems have a built-in RS232 port for connection to an optional dot matrix printer so that waterquality data and system parameters can be printed out and filed in compliance with Good LaboratoryPractice (GLP) guidelines.

Three Elix® systems are available producing 3, 5 or 10L/hr. The Elix® 3 and 5 systems can be upgraded toincrease the product flow rate as volume needs increase. Water produced by Elix® systems is fed into a30, 60 or 100 litre reservoir (see page 1086). Elix® systems are also available with a UV lamp for applications sensitive to bacterial contaminants.

RiOs-DI™ 3 Water Purification SystemsThe RIOs-DI™ 3 systems produce up to 10L/day of analytical grade water (Type II) from potable tap water.They are compact systems which integrate several purification technologies.

The RiOs-DI 3 is a very compact solution that efficiently combines reverse osmosis technology with deion-isation resins to produce pure water of high resistivity and low TOC (>10 MΩcm and <50ppb). Theproduct water is stored in an intergrated 6 litre reservoir and is ideal for low volume, routine laboratoryapplications.

The unique simple ‘plug-and-use’ SmartPak purification pack enables the production of Type II waterfrom tap water. The built in UV lamp* is ideal for applications that require low bacteria levels. A built-inpump ensures consistent flow rate even at lower feed pressures. A clear backlit colour display showsresistivity, temperature and reservoir water level.* RIOs-DI 3 UV only.

Systems for Low-Volume ApplicationsThe Milli-DI™ system provides deionised water (resistivity >1 MΩ.cm) directly from tap water at a flow rateof 0.7ml/min. It is ideal for users requiring low volumes of pure water, from 3-5L/day. This compact,battery-powered system is ideal for use in applications such as the preparation of buffers, reagents andmicrobiological culture media and as an effective pre-treatment for Simplicity™ ultrapure water systems(see catalogue items 704-123 and 704-129, page 1082).

The new line of RiOs™ reverse osmosis systems incorporates the latest developments in laboratory-scalereverse osmosis, combining the two purification stages into one compact unit. Primary purification isprovided by the Progard pre-treatment pack, which removes chlorine and particles and prevents scaling,protecting the reverse osmosis membrane used in the next stage. Final purification is provided by a high-recovery reverse osmosis loop. Water produced by RiOs™ systems is ideal for non-qualitative analyses,and for pre-treatment prior to final polishing by Milli-Q® ultrapure water systems.

Constant Flow Rate The production rate of standard RO systems is pressure- and temperature-dependent. At a given pressure,product flow rates typically drop 3% for every 1°C decrease in feed water temperature. However, a uniquetemperature system controls the pump operating pressure in response to water temperature changes,ensuring a steady product flow rate throughout the year regardless of water temperature.

Significant Water Savings RiOs™ systems are also designed to minimise the amount of rejected water by recycling a portion to theRO membrane feed stream. This results in significant water savings when compared to standard ROsystems or distillation systems.

Upgradeable Each RiOs™ system model can be upgraded to increase product flow rate as volume needs increase, asmall Electrodeionisation (EDI) module can be added inside the system. Addition of this EDI moduleconverts the RiOs™ system to an Elix® system.

Water produced by the RiOs™ systems is fed into a 30, 60 or 100 litre storage reservoir (see page 1086).A built-in automatic rinse function ensures that only water of an acceptable quality is delivered to thereservoir, diverting poor quality water to drain.

These reservoirs have been especially designed to store pure water produced by RiOs™ or Elix® waterpurification systems.

The stored water can be used directly in a number of applications or further purified through a Milli-Q®

polisher system. An advanced vent filter device coupled with a protected overflow protects the storedwater from recontamination by carbon dioxide, bacteria, particles and solvent vapours from thelaboratory atmosphere. The water level is measured by an electronic sensor inside the reservoir and isshown on the Elix® or RiOs™ display as % of full capacity. The water system is controlled by the levelsensor, switching to standby when the tank is full and back into operation automatically when water isdrawn off. Reservoirs can be fitted with an Automatic Sanitisation Module (ASM) which uses UV light toprevent bacterial proliferation in the stored water (please contact the Technical Office on 01342 826836for futher details).

Complete water systems that purify potable tapwater through to ultrapure reagent water givecomplete control over the purity of water used inthe laboratory.

To produce ultrapure water, a RiOs™ or Elix®

system purifies tap water through to laboratorygrade (RiOs™) or analytical grade (Elix®) water. Thisis fed into a storage reservoir. RiOs™ quality watercan be used directly from the reservoir for non-qualitative analyses or for feeding glasswarewashing machines.

Elix® quality water can be used directly from thereservoir for preparation of buffers, reagents andmicrobiological media and for feeding instrumen-tation (see page 1083).

Elix® or RiOs™ water can then be drawn from thereservoir to a Milli-Q® and further purified toproduce ultrapure reagent grade 18.2MΩ.cmwater (see pages 1079 to 1080).

Larger systems, for a suite of laboratories – or a whole building In some laboratory buildings it is more economical and appropriate to haveone large central water purification system producing laboratory oranalytical grade water which is then distributed to a number of laboratoriesvia a pipework ringmain. This water can be used directly or further purified.

In a typical installation, water is purified by a reverse osmosis system.

This purified water is stored in a bespoke reservoir (size dependant onrequirement) or in a storage and distribution unit (200L or 350L) whichincorporates a 7 day programmable pump.

The RiOs™ 30, 50, 100, 150 and 200 systems produce a type III grade waterfor general laboratory use. The Elix® 20, 35, 70 and 100 systems producetype II water that can be used for reagent, media and buffer preparation.

Finally, water is distributed around one or more laboratories for direct use,connection to washing machines or to feed a Milli-Q® (up to 1.5L/min) orSuper-Q™ (up to 12L/min.) system, to produce ultrapure water on demand.

Dead-ended lines should be avoided as bacteria and particles canaccumulate.

Select Range Water Purification SystemsThe Purite Select range is modular in its design so that you can produce a water purifi-cation system to best meet your exact requirements.

The entire Select range is delivered containing all the membranes, cartridges and hosesneeded to produce the desired water quality and so there are no hidden costsinvolved. HP and BIO units also have multiple dispense outlets. You can therefore usethe dispense valve at the top to gain the highest purity, or the tap on the tank toquickly and economically fill containers.

To ensure water is always within the correct quality range, all the Selects are monitoredby conductivity/resistivity meters. In addition the HP and BIO units come with a menudriven graphic display and alarms on the display.

Inaddition automatic flushing of the RO membrane allows the membrane to produceGrade 1 water on demand.

Select BIOThe BIO produces similar water (14-18 MΩ.cm) to the HP but with additional biologicalpurity. Neptune Water Purification SystemsNeptune is a range of advanced laboratory water purification polishing systems delivering guaranteed18.2MΩ.cm (at 25°C) ultra-pure water at a flow rate of up to 2 litres per minute. The water quality fromNeptune exceeds ISO3696 Grade 1 and ASTM Type 1 standards. Three models are available:

Neptune Analytical Provides 18.2MΩ.cm at 25°C, <1ppb TOC and <1cfu/ml bacteria. Feed water is first exposed to a dualwavelength 185/254nm UV photo-oxidation cell which cleaves organic contaminants into smallerionised species. Next, two organic absorption/ion-exchange media cartridges operate in series to removeorganic and ionic contaminants. Finally, a hygienic 0.05µm hollow fibre ultra-microfilter removes particlesand microbial impurities before the dispense outlet, which is fitted with a 0.2µm point-of-use filter forabsolute security.

Neptune Life Sciences Provides 18.2MΩ.cm water with bacteria less than 0.1cfu/ml and endotoxin levels of <0.02EU/ml. Freeof RNase/DNase. Feedwater first passes through two organic adsorption/ion-exchange media cartridgeswhich operate in series to remove trace organic and ionic contaminants. An ultraviolet sanitising unit at254nm then ensures a 99.9% bacterial kill and this is followed by a 0.05µm hollow fibre ultra-microfiltercartridge to remove pyrogenic matter. Ultra-pure water is then drawn from the dispense outlet which isfitted with a 0.2µm point-of-use filter.

704-190 Purewater 300 System for Washing MachinesThe Purewater 300 is specifically designed to feed laboratory glassware washing machines. The completepurification process, plus the high flow output are included to ensure trouble-free operation and residue-free glassware.

The unit consistently produces high quality rinse water of better than 1MΩ.cm. It produces 30 l/hour at4 bar/60psi water pressure and 10°C (48 l/hour @25°C) of pure water to the integral 30 litre storagetank, maximising the rinse water available whenever there is a demand.

The space requirement is minimised by combining the tank and the purification equipment into oneunit. The unit can be bench or wall mounted (wall mounting plate is optional) allowing further savingsof valuable bench space.

Minimal external connections are needed as the tank is integral to the unit (as is the feedwater boostpump if required). The unit is delivered ready to use with a free installation kit and the first set ofconsumables, so that pure rinse water can be obtained without additional cost or delay.
