“From the Bima” does not feel like the proper title for my page

at this time since neither I nor anyone else has been on the bima

for a while now. It is amazing how quickly our lives have

changed in response to the Coronavirus pandemic. Who could

have imagined so many working exclusively from home and

children engaged in distance learning? I think social distancing

is a misnomer; it should be called physical distancing because

we are remaining socially connected virtually. There is no ques-

tion that it is not the same, but people are incredibly adaptable.

I have been pleasantly surprised and impressed at how well we

have done as a congregation – teachers running class, meetings

taking place, minyan twice daily. I am as pleased and proud of

our membership, many who had very little online experience,

learning how to stay connected, as well as our teachers and oth-

ers setting meetings up.

One of our challenges is dealing with our fears at this time –

fear of the illness, fear of how long we will be living in our self-

imposed quarantines, fear of the economic impact, fear of the

unknown – there is so much that we just don’t know and living

like this is challenging. First, know that you are welcome to

reach out to me at anytime – call, email, message or zoom. Any

medium works. We sustain ourselves and draw strength doing

the same things that our people have done for generations – we

pray, we study Torah and we do mitzvot. These things ground

us, sustain us and give meaning to our lives.

I wish you a safe and connected Passover,

Rabbi Randall Mark

Dear Rabbi and Morning Minyan friends,

Thank you for gifting Paul and I with a Shabbat Dinner. It was a much appreciated, heart-

warming gesture and certainly delicious. I feel fortunate to call you my friends and have

cherished the camaraderie that we have developed during the eleven plus months that I was

saying Kaddish for my mother. Your support and friendship were beneficial for us to attend

minyan each morning.

In my mother's memory, the Morning Minyan group will be receiving a donation to further the

mitzvot that you already do.

It is said “There is a reason G-d limits our days. It makes each one precious”. My mornings at

minyan have been important and precious to me.

To all of you I say at this precarious time Hazak v’ Emet”-Be strong and of good courage. G-d

promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

Shomrei Torah’s Men’s Club has been busy over past month or so…

The Purim Carnival on Sunday March 9th was another outstanding suc-

cess. Rob Baron, Mike Green and their entire team create a little Shomrei

“Disneyland” overnight – and hundreds of kids and young families have a

ball. No mice escaped this year. Over the past nine years, these Carnivals

have raised nearly $5700 for the shul. But the main effect is outreach to

young families. On Sunday afternoon a Purim basket was delivered to a

young family that had just returned from the synagogue. They are not

members but thanked us effusively for Shomrei being such a nice place

for their daughter. THANK YOU ROB AND TEAM!

Yom HaShoah Yellow Candles will go out soon. YSH is April 22nd this

year – please light the candle on the evening of Tuesday April 21st. This

year is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27,

1945. In fact, the liberation of the camps occurred from July 1944 up

through May 1945. Seven camps were liberated in April 1945, including

Buchenwald, by US forces from April 4 – 11, leading to General Dwight

Eisenhower’s personal visit on April 12th. This Passover, 75 years ago,

was exactly when the horror was revealed to the world.

The survivors and their liberators are leaving us. It is up to us to RE-

MEMBER, to NEVER FORGET. This year, in honor of the liberation of

Auschwitz, the candles will have the names of children who died at

Auschwitz. Remember them in your prayers as you light your Yellow

Candle on this Yom Hashoah. Am Yisrael Chai!

SHOMREI TORAH SISTERHOOD

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you to all the people that came out to shop for the goodies, shelp them from the

store into their car and then again into the synagogue. Then to open, label, stuff, close

and sort 350+ Mishloach Manot baskets for delivery.

Thank you to Judy Krantz, Sue Gordon, Phyllis Staloff, Marcy Marcus, Sue Feldman,

Suzanne Zofi, Andrea Manfredonia, Betty Singer, Judy Weil, Lisa Zevin, Maxine Berger,

Sue Mirsky, Alice Spira, Rimma Markhasin, Shelly Foster, Roby Weiner, Diane Seltzer,

Rhita Gastwirth and Iris Fisher plus many more volunteers! Without all your hard work

and unbelievable dedication, this huge job just wouldn’t have gone as well as it did.

Thank you to everyone who helped deliver the beautiful baskets all over Wayne and be-

yond. What a undertaking! Whew, I’m pooped!

Finally, thank you to everyone who participated in this joyous endeavor. Without you,

this could not happen.

Now that Purim is over, let’s talk about Passover. Are you thinking about chicken soup,

kugel, brisket and that very special dessert? I know that I am. Now is the time to plan

your menus and some organized people (not me) have even begun cooking. Well, how

about buying everything Passover with a gift card (Scrip) from Sisterhood? It’s so easy to

do. Just call Marcy Marcus at 201-396-6660, Phyllis Staloff at 973-495-0865 or Roby

Weiner at 973-595-5393 and purchase a gift card to your favorite store! NO EXTRA

CHARGES. If you want $100 for Shoprite, that is what it will cost. Simple! They have

cards for Seasons, Kosher Nosh, Shoprite, Fairway, Stop and Shop, Panera, Dunkin’

Donuts, Starbucks and so much more. Purchasing Scrip (another word for Gift Card)

makes it so easy to shop and support Shomrei Torah at the same time. What’s wrong with

that?

Happy, healthy Passover to everyone.

Sisterhood President
