John ‘Terry’ Terrence Phelan

John Terrence Phelan

John “Terry” Terrance Phelan, 69, passed away on Dec. 31, 2013 at his home in Aravaipa, AZ. John was born on May 18, 1944 in Ray, AZ the son of John Joseph and Etta (Cutler) Phelan. John grew up and attended school in Hayden, AZ graduating for Hayden High School where he was an all-star athlete.

He worked in the mines for over 20 years. He was a hardworking man who loved his family with everything he had. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Janice; children, Lisa (Antonio) Meza, Tammy Phelan, Desiree Phelan and Sean Phelan; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jackie Damron and Denise Phelan-Propst. He is preceded in death by his son John J. Phelan III. Graveside services were held at Mountain View Cemetery, Hayden, AZ on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014. Funeral services for Robert Martinez Jr. will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at the Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny with the viewing at 9 a.m. and Rosary at 9:30 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Alex Tigga. A viewing is also planned for Friday, Jan. 17, at Griffith Mortuary from 6-9 p.m. Mr. Martinez, a resident of Dudleyville, passed away on Jan. 11, 2014. A full obituary will appear at a later date.

Cosme Real

Cosme R. Real Cosme R. Real went peacefully to be with our Lord on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014. He was born to Cosme and Josepha Real of Sonora, Arizona. Cosme retired from Kennecott as a blasting supervisor after 38 years and retired again from the Superior Water Treatment Plant after 13 years. He grew up and went to school in Sonora, Arizona. In his earlier years, he was on the Ray-Sonora Tiger Baseball Team, which was one of the first Hispanic teams in the area. His fondest memories were his horses and helping his

father as a local supplier in the small town of Sonora. Cosme and his wife were business owners of the El Charro in downtown Sonora in the late 1950s. Cosme relocated his family to Superior in 1959 and later helped establish the Sonorense Club. He became the first president of the club where he and Elsa were active members for many years. His greatest pleasures were his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed their company

and the special gatherings throughout the years. Cosme is survived by his wife, Elsa Real; children, Veronica Heron (Richard), Danny Real (Linda), Robert Real (Margie), Michael Real (Laura) and David Real (Priscilla); 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Superior with the viewing at 9:30 a.m., Rosary at 10 a.m. and the Funeral

Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in

Superior. Arrangements were made by Superior Funeral Home.

First of all, let me wish each and every one of you in District 1 a very Happy New Year. Let’s hope 2014 is prosperous for all of us. I am pleased that the first board meeting of 2014, the Supervisors were able to pass a 2.5 percent cost of living adjustment for Pinal County employees. This has been an issue I have been pushing for the past two years. Our employees have not seen a raise in the past six years and it has cost us some very good employees. They are just like you and I, they have bills to pay

and families to support. While 2.5 percent won’t make up for the last six years, it will go a long way in telling employees we value them and their service to the taxpayers of Pinal County. After a nationwide search, we have come up with our new county manager. Interim County Manager Greg Stanley will be taking the reins of a very demanding job as soon as he negotiates a contract with Supervisors Todd House and Steve Miller. Mr. Stanley has been with Pinal County since 2004 after serving as the

Public Works Director for the City of Casa Grande. He will have his plate full with Pinal County slowly rebounding from the economic recession that we have experienced since 2007. We are starting to see our new housing starts begin to rise and our sales tax receipts begin to grow as well. Pinal County welcomes a new chairman of the board for 2014. In a recent meeting, the Supervisors unanimously voted for Anthony Smith to be our chairman for the upcoming year. He takes over for District 3 Supervisor Steve Miller, who served

as our chairman for 2013. I congratulate Supervisor Miller for his term as chairman. He did a very good job leading the board in our first term as a five-member governing body. Supervisor Todd House will take over as vice-chairman. Again, my wishes for a safe and happy 2014 for each and every one of us. Many of you have grand-parents residing locally who are aging in their 60’s 70’s & 80’s. What fond memories of visits with your grand-parents I’m sure you experienced in your younger years. Grandma’s house was always a special place with the smell of fresh baked cookies and cakes when she knew you were coming. And so many special little things you learn out back in grandpa’s shop. Such wonderful memories. Now I must ask you, “Would you want your grandparents to go out and clean up the trash along the local highway?” Not a good thought is it? You say, ”No way. Prisoners do that kind of work!” Well I must tell you that it is not so true and yes that many grandparents are doing just that. I am a member of two individual ADOT one-mile clean-up crews. I am 77 years young and somewhat medium in age amongst many of my peers. We’ve done no wrong,

Remember those Grandparents – please have mercy!we’ve violated no laws but we’ve shown pride in our state by volunteering to pick up trash along the local highway roadsides. We do this every 3-4 months and I assure if not done, it becomes unsightly. It accumulates daily without fail. But, wait, before you run off to tell your dear grand-parents you read about these older folks out cleaning up along the highway, I want you to stop for just a moment. Ask yourself, what do you do with empty cigarette packs, empty beverage containers, spit bottles, etc.., as you drive down the highway to work or shop? Do you allow your children to throw paper, etc., out the car windows? Oh yes, and when you buy that beverage six pack or bag of ice at the store, do you just drop the plastic bag in the

back of your truck bed, where it stays until 2 miles down the highway? Styrofoam cups in the back of the truck, take the same route. OK, now go tell your dear grand-parents that you read about these seniors like them who are full of pride for state and country and do their little part by cleaning along the local highway. Yes, hug those grand-parents very tightly while there because they may not always be there for you. If, however, I believe that God is good and that He loves me, I will look to Him to be my primary source of happiness. I will seek to know Him through studying the Bible and by hanging out with people who can help me in my relationship with Him. By depending on God to take care of me, I can be less dependent on people. I can simply love people because they have intrinsic value. Since I don’t need them absolutely to be happy, I can choose to give to them without demanding something in return. What would happen in our relationships if we were totally secure in God and free from the need to demand things from others? This might be really good! Kearny - Ray High School’s annual Senior Interview Day was held on Mon., Nov. 25. All seniors participated in a mock interview with former graduates who have gone on to success in their chosen field. The experience is designed to help prepare seniors for real life interviews. When participating, seniors have to present themselves as if it were a real interview. This includes dressing professionally, having their paperwork - application, cover letter and resume- ready, and following the given instructions on job interview skills. Each student has a 15-20 minute interview, with the interviewer assigned to them, and are then evaluated on their application and interview. Feedback is provided on their evaluation form. Each interviewer is assigned 7 - 8 seniors to interview, and from their pool of applicants, they award a Top Job Applicant Award to the one who they would have offered the job to. This year’s Top Job Applicants were Andrew Riley, Dominic Bravo, Beauna Hathaway, Mikayla Seller, Yvette DIckey, and Grant Armendariz. The Top Job Applicants then had a group interview with all six interviewers and the overall winner was Dominic Bravo, who will be receiving a book scholarship for the college of his choice. The money for this scholarship is being donated by the interviewers.

Ray High School hosts annual Senior Interview Day

FLORENCE - The Pinal County Planning and Development Department will be holding a second series of public meetings to solicit input on Recreational Vehicles (RVs) used for visitor housing. “The Board of Supervisors has directed us to find out how residents feel about this issue,” said Planning and Development Director Jerry Stabley. “The County receives a number of calls each winter from residents concerned about visitors staying in RVs.” RVs include all types of camping setups from a small tent trailer up to the largest motorhome. The County Zoning Ordinance does not allow visitors to stay in RVs unless they are residing in an RV park. However, many residents want to allow friends and

team. Sophomore Stormee Galka (Hitter/Middle Blocker) was named to the first team while juniors Sabrina Martinez (Hitter/Middle Blocker) and Sidney Chenoweth (Setter) were named

to the second team. The ‘Cats earned the 10th seed in the state volleyball tournament after a 21 – 10 – 1 regular season record. They lost in the first round to seventh-seeded Joy Christian.

By Andrew LuberdaCopper Basin News The Bearcats girls’ basketball team was victorious in two of the three games it played last week. They defeated Chandler Prep and Hayden before a loss at San Carlos last Friday night. In their two victories, the Bearcats allowed only 21 points per game while scoring an average of 56.5 points per game. Junior Sidney Chenoweth along with sophomores Stormee Galka and Savannah Willis each scored in double figures in the two wins. Chenoweth had 16 points in each game, Galka added 12 points in each game, and Willis scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. The ‘Cats have an overall record of 7 – 10, including 3 – 1 in section play. They’re upcoming schedule includes games at Mogollon on January 17, 2014, and home versus Hayden on January 21. Both games start at 5:30 p.m.

It was the third meeting of the year between the schools. The ‘Cats winning streak included a 4 – 0 record at the Wildcat Booster Boys’ Holiday Tournament which was held January 3-4 at Mayer High School. The Bearcats enter the second half of the season with an overall record of 11 – 6, including 3 – 1 in section play. They are currently tied for 2nd place in their section. The ‘Cats will play at Mogollon on January 17, 2014 before returning home to battle Hayden on January 21. Both games tipoff at 7:00 p.m.

Using Recreational Vehicles for Short Term Visitor Housing

Pinal County Planning and Development Department will be conducting neighborhood meetings in January to obtain public feedback on allowing Recreational Vehicles (RVs) to be used for visitor housing. These meetings are a follow up to meetings that were held in October. The Board of Supervisors directed staff to hold two sets of meetings to make sure that full and part time residents had a chance to participate.

RVs include all types of camping setups from a small tent trailer up to the largest motorhome. The County Zoning Ordinance does not allow visitors to stay in RVs unless they are in an RV park. However, many residents want to allow friends and relatives to stay in RVs when they visit in the winter. The County receives a number of calls each winter, with concerns about visitors staying in RVs.

The Board of Supervisors wants to know how County residents feel about the issue. They will then use this feedback to determine if and how they want to change the zoning regulations.

These meetings are designed to allow everyone who is interested in this issue to attend and to share their views. The attached list shows that neighborhood meetings will be held in locations across the County.
