Crop Update
Apples & Pears
Avocados
Asparagus
Bell Peppers
Berries
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Washington is in the midst of its new crop season, with more and more apples becoming available in the upcoming weeks. Fujis are gapping for the next week or so. Bartlett, D’Anjou, Red, and Bosc pears have started in low volume
New crop from Baja has started and volume has increased. Markets are steady. Overall quality is excellent.
The MX “Flora Loca” is starting to get better yields on larger sized fruit, but this crop is beginning to wind down as we approach the next crop. Overall quality is good. Markets are coming off.
Green bell supplies are plentiful with fields in Oxnard and Stockton/Hollister. Red and Yellow bells continue out of Hollister and Oxnard. Markets are steady
The Broccoli market has started to come off as supplies and yields have increased. Quality has started to improve with slight purpling, some mechanical damage, and occasional yellow cast.
The cauliflower market is slowly adjusting downward with a little more regular supply. The quality is good with minor bruising and yellow cast, with weights in the 25 to 28-pound level.
Blackberries Supplies continue to increase, as Mexican production starts to ramp up. Quality is also improving, as we are seeing fewer red cell berries being shipped.
Raspberries Quality overall has been good. California is still a major player in production, with Mexico starting to contribute more and more fruit. Look for quality to remain good and supplies to increase over the next few weeks.
Strawberries Supplies continue to be short as demand increases. Santa Maria has started production, but not enough to offset demands from the dwindling Salinas crop. Look for markets to remain firm for the next week or two, until Santa Maria hits full stride.
Blueberries The Pacific Northwest crop has all but come to an end, and the pipeline is filling up with import fruit from Mexico, Argentina, and Peru. Look for quality to improve as we shift into imported product.
FRESH FACTSYour Weekly Market Update!
Good supplies and light demand continues to be the story with this commodity. This market has remained steady and looks to remain steady going into next week. All sizing is available. Some shippers are flexing on large sizing, twenty-four counts in particular. The quality continues to be good. Slight bowing and insect damage have been reported but is minimal. The weights are averaging fifty-three to fifty-seven pounds per case.
Leaf Lettuce & Iceberg100% Salinas Product
Potatoes
Tomatoes
There are some minor defects being found, that are typically associated with new crop potatoes. Some wet spots, and light molding have been reported in some crops, but overall good quality is being shipped. The market continues to be firm on 60ct and larger, but should ease up as we move along into the season. Stockton is finishing up production, and Idaho and Washington are in full swing. Quality and supplies are good out of all growing regions.
California gas green season is in full production. Quality is very good and supplies should continue through October. New fields began on Rounds and Romas from Baja causing markets to even out with steady production. Quality is good. Cherry and Grape supplies are slightly better with new crop in Baja. Markets are steady. Quality is good.
Iceberg Lettuce: This market is about to get extremely active as the salinas season begins to finish in the next 40 – 60 days. The damage caused by last week’s excessive heats and rain has created tight supplies and will lead to escalated markets. You will see mechanical damage/bruising. Huron will begin production as early as the second week of October. Suppliers will be holding buyers to 12 week averages.
