The following information applies to both the vehicle s front and rear seat belts.
• No modification may be made to the component parts of the restraint system (belts and seats and theirmountings) originally fitted.
For special applications (e.g. fitting child seats) consult your Renault Dealer.• Do not use devices which give any play in the belts (e.g. clothes pegs, clips, etc.): a seat belt which is worn too loosely
risks causing injuries in case of an accident.
• Never wear the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back.
• Never use the same belt for more than one person and never hold a baby or child on your knees with your seat beltaround them.
• The belt should never be twisted.
• The seat belts in use at the time a serious acciden must be replaced. Likewise, have your seat belts replaced as soon asthey show any signs of wear.
• When refitting the rear bench seat, take care that the seat belts are correctly positioned so that they can be usedproperly.
• If necessary, readjust the position and tension the belt.

These are:
O buckle pretensioners,
O driver's seat lap pretensioner,
O force limiters,
O driver and passenger front air bags.
These systems are provided to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.
Depending on the force of theimpact the system may engage:
- the seat belt;- the buckle pretensioner (which
engages to correct seat belt play);- the lap pretensioner (for thedriver’s seat), the “low volume”front air bag and the force limiter;
- the “large volume” front air bag.
PretensionersWith the ignition switched on, if there is a severe frontal impact anddepending on the force of theimpact, the system may engage:- piston 1 which immediately
retracts the seat belt;- piston 2 on the driver’s seat.
The pretensioners hold the seat beltagainst the body and thus increaseits efficiency.
• Following an accident, have the entire restraintsystem checked.
• No operations whatsoever arepermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, air bags, computers, wiring) or use on anyother vehicle, even if identical.

The seat belt pretensioners andthe air bag operate together. If
one of the systems has passed thedate whenit is due for renewal, itwill alter the overall safetyprotection provided.
Air bags for driver and frontpassengerAn air bag may be provided for boththe driver and the front passenger.
“Air bag” inscriptions on thesteering wheel and dashboardtogether with a label on the lowerpart of the windscreen indicate thatthe vehicle is equipped with an air
bag.
Each air bag system consists of:- An air bag and gas generator fitted
on the steering wheel for thedriver and in the dashboard for thefront passenger.
- A computer for both systems,
which includes the impactdetector and a monitor controllingthe electrical trigger system for thegas generator.
- A single warning light onthe instrument panel. The air bag system uses the
principles of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the air baginflates, it will generate heat, produce smoke (this does not mean
that a fire is about to start) andmake a noise upon detonation. In asituation where an air bag isrequired, it must inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin.

OperationThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.
If a severe frontal impact occurs, the air bag(s) inflate(s) rapidly, cushioning the impact of thedriver's head and chest against thesteering wheel and the frontpassenger's head against thedashboard. The air bag then deflates
immediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way whenthey get out of the vehicle.
Special feature of the front air bagThere are two volumes of operationdepending on the force of theimpact:- “low volume” air bag, this is the
first degree of operation;
- “large volume” air bag, the air bagseams rip so that a larger volumeof air is released into the bag (for
the most forceful impacts).
FaultsWarning light 1 will light up on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then go out after afew seconds.
If it does not light up when theignition is switched on, or lights upwhen the engine is running, there isa fault in the system.
Consult your Renault Dealer as soonas possible. Your protection will bereduced until this problem isrectified.

All the warnings below are given sothat, if the air bag is activated, it isnot obstructed in any way and alsoto prevent the risk of seriousinjuries caused by items which may
be dislodged when the air baginflates.
Warnings concerning the driver’s air bag
• Do not modify either the steering wheel or the steering wheel boss.
• Do not cover the steering wheel boss.
• Do not affix any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to the
steering wheel boss.• The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnel
within the Renault network).
• Do not sit too close to the steering wheel. If you sit with your arms slightly bent (see “Adjusting your driving position” in section 1), it will ensure thatthere is sufficient space for the air bag to inflate properly and to be fullyeffective.
Warnings concerning the passenger air bag
• Do not attach or affix with adhesive any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) on the dashboard near where the air bag islocated A.
• Do not place anything between the dashboard and the passenger (animal, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).
• The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as there
is a risk that serious injuries may be sustained. As a general rule, keep allparts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the air bag inflates.
The air bag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the air bags and seat belts are integralparts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If seat belts are notworn, it exposes the occupants to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. It may also increase the
risk of minor superficial injuries occurring when the air bag is deployed, although such minor injuries arealways possible with air bags.
The air bag does not offer protection against minor and moderately serious frontal impacts, side or rear impacts or if thevehicle turns over.
• No work or modification whatsoever may be performed on the entire air bag system (computer, wiring, etc.) (except by qualified Renault network personnel).
• To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified Renault Network personnel may work on the air bag system.
• As a safety precaution, have the air bag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, is stolen or broken into.
• When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.
• When scrapping your vehicle, contact your Renault Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).
CHILD SAFETY
In all countries there are regulations Child restraints for which approval

ggoverning the use of restraintsystems for children and babies.
In Europe, children under 12 yearsof age or shorter than 1.50 m(1)
must be seated in an approvedsafety device which is suitable for
the weight and size of the child. The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.
Remember that a collision at30 mph (50 km/h) is the same asfalling a distance of 10 metres.Expressed in other terms, transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent of allowing him or her to play on athird-floor balcony which doesnot have any railings.
(1) Always comply with the laws of thecountry in which you are travelling. They may be different to theguidelines in this handbook.
Under no circumstancesshould babies or children
be allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another
passenger in the vehicle.
If a head-on collision occurs at30 mph (50 km/h) a child weighing30 kg (66 lbs) will be transformedinto a missile equivalent to onetonne: you will find it impossibleto hold the child, even if youyourself are wearing a belt.
It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your knee.Never use the belt for more thanone person at the same time.
ppwas obtained after January 1992offer a level of safety much greaterthan for restraints with approval
before that date.
It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies with
European regulation ECE 44.Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it istype approved) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.
The standard classifies childrestraints in five categories:
Category 0: from 0 to 10 kg (0 to 22 lbs)Category 0+: from 0 to 13 kg (0 to 28 lbs)Category 1: from 9 to 18 kg (20 to 40 lbs)Category 2: from 15 to 25 kg (33 to 55 lbs)Category 3: from 22 to 36 kg (48 to 80 lbs)

gThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility.
To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsobtained from a Renault Dealer.
If your vehicle is fitted with anIsofix system you should use anIsofix seat (see section 1, “Isofixchild seat attachment system”).
Restraint systems for all thecategories are available. Thesesystems have been developed inconsultation with themanufacturers and have been tested
in Renault vehicles.Consult your Renault Dealer andask him to help you install it.
Category O and O+A child's neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. In afront-facing seat there is a risk thatthe child will sustain neck injuriesin the event of a frontal collision.Renault therefore recommends arear-facing seat with a harness thatgives all-round protection (figure 1).
Category 1Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild's pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using the vehicle'sthree-point belts are not adequateand there is a risk that the child willsustain abdominal injuries in theevent of a frontal collision. It istherefore advisable to use rear-facing seats (figure 1), bucket-typeseats (figure 2) or seats with
harnesses.Place the head restraint at the topposition to allow you to press theseat back of the child seat firmlyagainst the vehicle seat back.
To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourcar and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide awarranty.

Category 2(15 to 25 kg) (33 to 55 lbs)The type of restraint most suitablefor the pelvis of a child aged
between 4 and 7 is one that can becombined with a three-point seat
belt. This is a booster seat (figure 3)with belt guides to ensure that the
belt will be worn flat over the thighsof the child.
A booster seat with a height-adjustable seatback and a belt guideare recommended as this will allowthe belt to be worn as close to the
base of the neck as possible but noton it. It is also possible to use a
bucket seat (figure 4).
Place the head restraint at the topposition to allow you to press the
seat back of the child seat firmlyagainst the vehicle seat back.
22 to 36 kg (48 to 80 lbs)For children aged over seven, a
booster seat with belt guides isrecommended to ensure that thevehicle's three-point seat belt will
be worn flat over the child's thighs.
A booster seat with a height-adjustable seatback and a belt guideare recommended as this will allowthe belt to be worn as close to the

This function is anadditional aid in theevent of critical drivingconditions to allow the
behaviour of the vehicle to beadapted to the drivingconditions.
However, the function does nottake the place of the driver. It

It can, thus, under nocircumstances replace thevigilance or responsibility of thedriver when manoeuvring thevehicle (the driver must always

Operating principleA sensor in the steering wheel
detects the direction selected by thedriver.
Other sensors throughout thevehicle measure the actualdirection.
The system compares the directionselected by the driver and the actualdirection of the vehicle and correctsthis as necessary by applying the
brakes selectively and/or acting onthe engine power.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM: ABS

The safety enhancement is that the brake control system prevents thewheels from locking, even if the

quite possible for the driver to steerthe vehicle and to avoid an obstaclewhilst at the same time applying the

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM: ABS (continued)
Two situations must be consideredif there is a fault in the ABS system
1 - The orange warning
light is lit up on the instrumentpanel.
The braking system operates inthe same way as for a vehicle not

2 - The orange
warning light and the

fault indicator light are lit up onthe instrument panel.
This indicates that both the braking system and the ABSsystem are faulty. Your vehicle
brakes may still partiallyoperate. However, it isdangerous to brake suddenlyand it is essential to stopimmediately, as soon as traffic
conditions allow. Contact yourRenault Dealer as a matter orurgency.
The braking control provided bythe anti-lock braking system isindependent of the effort applied to
the brake pedal. In an emergency, apply continuous pressure to the brake pedal - there is no need topump it repeatedly.
EMERGENCY BRAKE ASSIST
This is a system in addition to ABSwhich helps reduce the vehiclestopping distances.
Operating principle
The system detects an emergency braking situation. In this case, braking assistance instantly reaches

ABS braking is maintained as longas the brake pedal is not released.
Hazard warning lights come on
These may light up in the event of rapid deceleration.
This function is an additionalaid in the event of criticaldriving conditions to allowthe behaviour of the vehicle
to be adapted to the drivingconditions.
However, the function does not takethe place of the driver. It does notincrease the vehicle's limitations andshould not encourage you to drivemore quickly.

TYRES
Tyre safety - road wheels
The tyres are the only contact between the vehicle and the road, soit is essential to keep them in goodcondition.
You must make sure that your tyresconform to local road regulations.
M i t i i th t
When the tread has worn down to
the level of these risers, they become visible 2: the tyresconcerned must be replaced now asonly 1.6 mm maximum of treadremains and this is not sufficient tomaintain good grip on wet roads.
Faults which occur when driving, such as striking the kerb, maydamage the tyres and could lead tomisalignment of the front axle
geometry. An overloaded car, long journeys bymotorway, particularly in very hotweather, or continual driving onpoorly surfaced minor roads willlead to more rapid tyre wear and

Only tyres of the samemake, dimension, typeand profile should beused to replace original
tyres.
Tyres fitted to the vehicle shouldeither be identical to those fittedoriginally or conform to thoserecommended by your RenaultDealer.
Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread must have sufficientdepth; tyres approved by Renault's
Technical Department have wearwarning strips 1 which are risersmoulded into the tread at severalpoints.
lead to more rapid tyre wear andaffect safety.
TYRES (continued)
Tyre pressures
Tyre pressures must be adhered to.(Remember to check the sparewheel at the same time.) Tyrepressures must be checked at leastonce a month and always before along journey. (Refer to the sectionon Tyre pressures.)
Incorrect tyre pressureslead to abnormal tyre
Tyre pressures should be checked
when the tyres are cold; ignorehigher pressures which may bereached in hot weather or followinga fast journey.
If tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, assume anincrease of 0.2 to 0.3 bar.
Never deflate a hot tyre.
Note: A label (depending oncountry or version) stuck on theedge or frame of the driver's doorgives the recommended tyrepressures.
Fitting new tyres
For safety reasons, thisoperation must only becarried out by aspecialist.
Fitting different tyres maychange your vehicle as follows:
- It may mean that your vehicle
no longer conforms to currentregulations.- It may change the way it
handles when cornering.- It may cause the steering to be
heavy.

lead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hotrunning, factors which
may seriously affect safety andlead to:
- poor roadholding- the risk of blow-outs or of
throwing a tread at high speed.
Tyre pressures depend on theload and the driving speed.Adjust the pressures accordingto the conditions of use. (Refer tothe section on tyre pressures.)
Changing wheels around
Each of the sensorsintegrated in the valves isdevoted to onesingle wheel: under no
circumstances should you swapthe wheels.
There is a risk of falseinformation leading to seriousconsequences.
y- It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of chains.

• “Snow” or winter tyresWe would recommend that these
be fitted to all four wheels toensure that your vehicle retainsmaximum road holding.
Note: We would point out thatthese tyres may sometimes have:- A specific direction of rotation.- A maximum speed which may
