KEVIN PARNELL/LAKE COUNTRY CALENDAR
GEORGE ELLIOT STUDENTS Harman Brar and David Robertson show the design of the kokanee they will paint near Lake Country storm drains that are close to Middle Vernon Creek, an important kokanee salmon spawning stream.
KEVIN PARNELLSTAFF REPORTER
ree years ago, when Lake Country student Harman Brar took part in a project to count spawning kokanee sal-mon in Middle Vernon Creek, the results were incredible.
Spawning kokanee by the hundreds splashed around in the creek while hundreds of other lay dead after spawning and completing their life cycle.
Around every turn there were more kokanee and the project put the spotlight on the health of the kokanee at that time and the importance of Middle Vernon Creek as a spawning stream for Wood Lake kokanee.
So when Brar, now in Grade 11, returned
to the stream this year with his environmental studies class, he was ex-pecting to see about the same results. But the ko-kanee weren’t there.
“Back when we did that project there were hundreds, both dead and alive, but now when we checked there were maybe eight of them,” said Brar, outside of George Elliot school, near Middle Vernon Creek. “We don’t know exactly why the kokanee aren’t there, but one of the reasons could be the pollutants that get into the stream.”
So back inside George Elliot, Brar and his class-mates decided to em-bark on a project to see if they could help kokanee as well as raise awareness about the importance of the stream that at times
is littered with garbage. e group is planning to paint nearby storm drains with a picture of a kokanee, reminding people that anything that makes its way into the drain, will also eventually make it into Middle Ver-non Creek.
ey also plan on planting mycelium fun-gus near the stream in order to use its natur-al ability to act as a lter and keep harmful chem-icals out of the stream.
“ ere is lots of junk in the river and lots of chemicals that make their way into the stream from the highway and from the roads,” said Brar.
“ at’s why we want to plant the myceli-um. e paintings by the storm drains are to spread awareness of
what’s happening. If people see the sh they might start to wonder.”
After initially coming up with the idea, Brar approached the District of Lake Country to get approval for the project. It took awhile before he heard back and was even considering moving on, until the project picked up momentum late last week.
Harman also brought his friend David Robert-son on board and togeth-er with the other mem-bers of their environ-mental studies group, the project will get go-ing over the next sever-al weeks.
Robertson said they didn’t recognize how bad the kokanee problem was and the project has taken on even more im-portance.
“When Harman brought it to me and we went to the stream you start to realize it’s a prob-lem,” he said.
“ ere just wasn’t any kokanee. It will be good to see the numbers of kokanee go up in the fu-ture but we have to start raising awareness now about what’s happened.”
e GESS students have put their project before the Oceola Fish and Game club, who have been working on improving the kokanee stocks. Spokesperson Rick Simpson applauded the youth for their ef-forts and said every little bit helps.
“ ere is no sin-gle smoking gun for the Wood Lake kokanee population crash,” he wrote in an email to the students. “however, non-
point and point pollu-tion in Wood Lake are thought to be among the contributing factors to the decline. e atten-tion to what goes down our storm drains is prac-tical and helpful in rais-ing awareness and per-haps, in the longer term, changing attitudes and behaviour.”
So for the two stu-dents that was enough to get them going on what started out as a school project but which has the potential to be so much more.
“It feels good that we have got a lot of re-sponse,” said Brar.
“Hopefully this spreads awareness for the next generation of stu-dents coming up and they can keep working on it.”[email protected]

e District of Lake Country is moving for-ward with a plan to im-prove the municipalities roadways after identify-ing a $1.5 million annual shortfall to maintain the district’s current roads.
A steering committee made up of residents, community group rep-resentatives, city council representatives and dis-trict sta has reviewed the current state of Lake Country’s 200 kilometres of road, examining en-gineering reports, the projected needs, costs of maintenance, road re-newal and transportation improvements that will bring it all together in a mapped 20-year plan for Lake Country.
rough what the dis-trict called a progressive infrastructure manage-ment approach, the dis-trict was able to accur-ately calculate that Lake Country has a $1.5 mil-lion annual shortfall to look after the current roads.
Lake Country roads constructed in the 1970s and 1980s are now at the end of their life.
“Like any grow-ing community, roads in Lake Country are used by more vehicles, trucks, pedestrians and cyclists than they were when the roads were originally constructed,” said Mayor James Baker.
“So when improve-ments on main roads are
scheduled, it is important to add active transpor-tation components for walking and cycling.”
e district’s 20-year plan called Transporta-tion, for Tomorrow, looks at ways to get around Lake Country in safe and enjoyable ways.
 e preliminary re-
search has been done and now it is time to as for the community’s input to help design a proper-ly functioning road net-work, the cornerstone of a healthy, livable and vi-brant community, say district o cials.
“ is doesn’t mean that every road in Lake Country will have a side-walk and bicycle path,” stated Coun. Owen Dickie, a steering com-mittee member.
“ e design of each road improvement pro-ject will be based on use, volume and need. It does mean that, on comple-tion, Transportation for Tomorrow will have de-veloped a transporta-
tion network plan that will serve to inter-con-nect our community in a safe, sensible, logical and cost-e ective way.”
e 20-year plan in-volves the maintenance, renewal and improve-ment of the system of roads, walkways and bi-cycle paths.
A display in the lobby of Municipal Hall and on www.lakecountry.bc.ca lays out the main-tenance task list as well as an annual costs.
It also explains the various types of roads and active transportation improvements the dis-trict can achieve over the next 20 years throughout the community.
“We’re at the point where a decision has to be made on funding the $1.5 million annual de -cit to manage the roads infrastructure we cur-rently have,” said Greg Buchholz, operations manager.
“It is important that the community under-stands what is involved and how important this decision is right now. e solutions proposed in the Transportation for To-morrow plan were craft-ed to respect the rural nature of our commun-ity and value the beauty of our surrounding farms and environment.”
If residents have ques-tions about the plan, they should contact Greg Buchholz at 250-766-5650.

My dog nds a bro-ken branch in the bushes.
A purebred Chesa-peake Bay Retriever, she doesn’t feel her life is ful- lled unless she’s retriev-
ing something— a ball, a stu ed toy, a stick.
She struggles to drag the branch out. e surrounding shrub-bery has woven into the branch’s twigs. My dog tugs, heaves, jerks. Out comes a branch twice her length.
Dogs don’t carry tape
measures. But even a dog can recognize that a six-foot branch will not travel easily down a three-foot wide trail between the tree trunks.
Methodically, she plants one paw on the main stem while she chomps on protrud-ing twigs. Some snap o easily. Others need to be worried o as she tosses her head from side to side. Almost by accident, I suspect, she snaps o the top end of the branch.
She picks up the shortened branch in her jaws, and trots proudly down the trail ahead of me, holding her head high.
I’m lost in admira-tion—not for what she achieved, but for her willingness to try it.
Of course, with a human brain, I could immediately analyze what she needed to do.

used to say that if he ever
won the lottery, he would “farm until it’s all gone.”
It was 1960 when he and my mother pulled up stakes in the Oka-nagan, where their fam-ilies had been for gener-ations, and moved north to carve a homestead out of a half section in the Peace River country.
So it’s a mainly north-ern perspective that I bring to the latest de-bate over B.C.’s agricul-tural land reserve. A dia-logue of the deaf has been going on for dec-ades in B.C., where there are two separate realities in agriculture.
e dominant voice is always from the south-west, from the Okanagan to the Fraser Valley to southern Vancouver Is-land. is is not only B.C.’s most productive land, it’s also the place of greatest population and development pressure, where three million of the province’s four mil-
lion residents live and more arrive every day.
In the rest of the prov-ince, except for pockets that are attractive for rec-reational development, farming is a tough row to hoe.
ese days, people are more likely to be mov-ing away.
In our urbanized so-ciety, the loudest voices tend to be the least in-formed, from back-yard-chicken hipsters to what I call “drive-by en-vironmentalists,” who like to look out their car windows at green elds as they motor from their
subdivisions to big-box stores.
e elderly Sikhs and Mexican guest work-ers bent over in the elds don’t need their lofty lec-tures on “food security.”
Voices from the rest of the province are seldom heard and quickly shout-ed down, as was the case at the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities con-vention in Vancouver.
Merritt councillor Mike Goetz pleaded for relief from an Agricul-tural Land Commission that refuses to release a property that has “grown nothing but rocks and tumbleweeds for the last 100 years.”
Similar property next door was released, but not this parcel, blocking a project for ve years in a little town that could use the work and addi-tional tax base. Urban sprawl isn’t a big prob-lem in Merritt, which like many small towns is trying to hang onto its population.
Spallumcheen coun-
cillor Ed Hanoski de-scribed the situation be-yond the towns, the real rural B.C. He proposed easing the restrictions on building a second home on farm properties.
Currently, farmers can put a mobile home on their property for an elderly or in rm rela-tive, but nothing with a permanent foundation. Once that relative moves or passes away, the home is supposed to be re-moved.
Hanoski said a sew-age system for such a residence costs around $12,000. Add the tem-porary foundation, skirt-ing, well hookup, power, landscaping, driveway, and a mobile home that will lose its value if it has to be moved, and the property owner takes a loss of $150,000 or more.
at’s why the re-moval rule is routine-ly ignored in rural B.C., Hanoski said.
ese second homes are the only rental stock there is, providing mod-
est income for marginal farms, and should be al-lowed permanent foun-dations. Motion de-feated, after a scolding from a Sunshine Coast delegate about people lusting to build mansions on farmland.
I asked Bill Ben-nett, the cabinet minis-ter in charge of the latest agricultural land review, about a rumoured pro-posal to split the prov-ince into two zones with di erent rules.
He declined to com-ment, but described the case of Fort Steele Farms, the East Koote-nay community’s only market garden that al-most closed because the next generation was in-itially refused permission for a second home.
e two zones ap-proach deserves serious consideration.

WINN is a $100 mil-lion ve-year federal ini-tiative that o ers re-payable contributions to help small- and me-dium-sized enterpris-es (SMEs) with opera-tions in Western Cana-da move their new and innovative technologies from the later stages of research and develop-ment to the marketplace.
e rst application intake period for WINN begins November 9, 2013, and ends on De-cember 8, 2013.
Last week I met with a couple of local innova-tors, including Acceler-ate Okanagan, and the feedback on WINN was positive.
Accelerate Okana-gan, in partnership with the federal government’s Department of West-ern Economic Diversi- cation (WD), also held
a WINN Initiative Info Session, which I under-stand was well-attended.
WINN came about as a result of our Gov-ernment’s consultations with western businesses and entrepreneurs in an e ort to nd ways to ad-dress the gaps identi ed in the Canadian inno-vation process, gaps that slow down getting great ideas to market.
e WINN Initiative is also consistent with the Jenkins Report rec-ommendation to sup-port industry through innovation programs and to redeploy funds to help small- and me-dium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grow into larger,
competitive rms.If you would like to
learn more about the ini-tiative, please go to www.wd-deo.gc.ca or contact the WD BC regional of- ce at 604-666-6256.
Also on the inno-vation front is a grow-ing movement called so-cial innovation. ere are many de nitions of so-cial innovation but essentially, it involves mobilizing partner-ships between non-prof-its, charities, social en-terprises, and business to nd solutions to our most pressing social challenges.
Since 2011, the Gov-ernment has signaled its support for social inno-vation initiatives to help community organiza-tions develop and imple-ment innovative ideas for social problems.
is October, in a keynote speech at the Social Enterprise World Forum, the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and So-cial Development high-lighted the importance of social innovation in addressing social chal-
lenges in Canada. He noted that for too long governments have im-posed solutions to Can-ada’s social development challenges, while ignor-ing the innovative and successful approach-es being developed in lo-cal communities and the private sector.
In fact, e orts to en-courage and create vital links between communi-ty organizations and the private sector are already happening here in the Okanagan.
Later this month, or-ganizations and indi-viduals from across the Okanagan Valley will be pitching their creative ideas for making positive social change at an event hosted by the Okana-gan Changemakers, a non-pro t organization focused on solving social problems through col-laboration, mentorship and action.
Highlighting some of the best For-Pro t, Non-Pro t, Established Registered Charity and Youth Led initiatives, this event will provide participants with the op-
portunity to get togeth-er with likeminded so-cial entrepreneurs to talk about social enterprise.
Organizers prom-ise some good food, live music, and inspiring sto-ries to get the social en-trepreneur ideas owing. Proceeds from the event will go to supporting year round programming and mentorship for so-cial cause organizations.
e event takes place ursday November 21, 2013, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA). For more info please go to www.okanaganchangemak-ers.com.
e Okanagan is home to some of the best and brightest entrepre-neurs in Canada who are leading the way to a more innovative econ-omy. Not only are they driving the local econ-omy toward job cre-ation, they are also nd-ing solutions to our most pressing social challeng-es.
 eir dedication to
succeed is ensuring a better quality of life in our communities and its proof once more that the Okanagan is one of the best places to live in Canada.
e Honourable Ron Cannan is the Member
of Parliament for Kelow-na-Lake Country and welcomes your feedback at [email protected]. In-formation on local an-nouncements and feder-al government programs can be found at www.cannan.ca .

When we com-bine an awareness of
loss and su ering with an optimism that we can make a di erence, we can be motivated to take remarkable steps to end the loss and su ering.
Look at the money that has been raised, and the important research that has been done with that money, in our ghts against cancer, AIDS and other diseases and medical conditions.

A keen appreciation of the loss is a necessary motivational ingredient. e light of hope is also necessary. We are not going to throw our hard earned money, nor our time, at something un-less we feel that our con-tribution will make a dif-ference.

news
We all know someone who has been
touched by cancer.
If you’re concerned about cancer prevention you can take comfort in the fact that making
healthy lifestyle changes can greatly reduce your risk of developing the disease.
Here are some tips from the Mayo Clinic and e Canadian Can-cer Society on reducing your risks of cancer.
1. Daily exercise. In addition to helping
you control your weight, physical activity lowers the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer.
Adults who partici-pate in any amount of physical activity gain some health bene ts.
Strive to get at least 30 minutes of physical ac-tivity in your daily rou-tine–and if you can do more, even better.
2. Don’t smoke.Using any type of to-
bacco puts you at im-mediate risk of develop-ing cancer.
Smoking has been linked to various types of cancer including can-cer of the lung, blad-der, cervix and kidney and chewing tobacco has been linked to cancer of the mouth, tongue and pancreas.
Even exposure to second-hand smoke may increase your risk of lung cancer
3. Alcohol consump-tion.
Research shows that drinking any type of al-cohol—beer, wine or spirits —raises your risk
of cancer. e less alcohol you
drink, the more you re-duce your risk.
4. UV and sun ex-posure.
e risk of skin can-cer today is greater than it was 20 years ago and continues to increase.
Reduce your risk of skin cancer by avoiding tanning beds, using your ‘sun sense’ (sunscreen and sunglasses, seeking shade, avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day) and talking to your doctor about any changes to your skin.
3. Eat a healthy diet. Can you really live
longer by eating a healthy diet?
According to research, the answer is yes. Stud-ies have found that eat-ing ve servings of fruits and vegetables daily will extend your life by sever-al years.
Along with a long-er life, eating more fruits and vegetables help you to arrive at and maintain a healthy weight.
Scientists found that eating broccoli or cab-bage just three times a month could reduce an individual’s risk of blad-der cancer by as much as 40 per cent.
Another study in
Cancer Research, found that women who in-creased their cruciferous vegetable intake with-in the rst three years af-ter a breast cancer diag-nosis lowered their risk for mortality by up to 62 percent and their risk for recurrence by up to 35 percent.
Cruciferous vege-tables—named for the shape of their owers, whose petals resemble a cross—include broccoli, cabbage, cauli ower, bok choy, kale and brussels sprouts, among others.
ese foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and bre, which are thought to help protect against colon cancer.
ey also contain compounds that may help reduce in amma-tion and ward o DNA damage, both risk factors for disease
As well, consider lim-iting your fat intake by choosing leaner and low-er fat foods—red meat
and processed meat in-crease your risk of cancer.
High fat diets increase risk of being overweight or obese which can in-crease risk of breast, co-lon, lung, kidney and liv-er cancers.
Consider these other cancer ghting super-foods:
Almonds: High in healthy unsaturated fat, protein, and bre, stud-ies have shown that al-monds are associated with lower body weights and body mass index as well as reduced blood glucose levels for those with type 2 diabetes.
ese heart-friendly nuts are rich in vitamin E, magnesium, and iron.
Sweet potato/yams: A medium sweet pota-to (with the skin) clocks in at about 100 calories, and it’s full of bre, be-ta-carotene (vitamin A), potassium, and vitamin B6. Purple sweets sup-ply a healthy dose of an-thocyanins, powerful antioxidants that ght in ammation.
Blueberries are full of antioxidants, vitamins, and bre, and are lower in sugar than some other fruits.

e colder weather’s arrival means home-owners across the coun-try are bracing them-selves for the battle against bold, foraging deer.
But with recent re-ports that Lyme dis-ease—transmitted by ticks that live on deer—is even more prevalent than health o cials once thought, keeping deer away from your backyard is not just a cosmetic or nancial issue any more.
Your success at de-terring deer could dir-ectly a ect your family’s health.
e Centers for Dis-ease Control and Pre-vention recently esti-mated about 300,000 cases of Lyme disease are diagnosed each year.
Only about 30,000 of those actually get re-
ported to the CDC. Many more likely go un-diagnosed since Lyme symptoms can mimic other ailments and even disappear altogether for a time.
Lyme disease is now the most common tick-borne illness, according to the CDC, and its health consequences can be severe.
Lyme disease is named for the river-side Connecticut town where it rst emerged in 1977. A number of children in the area began exhibiting arthritis-like symptoms, a hallmark of the disease.
A bull’s-eye tar-get-shaped rash at the bite location may be the rst indication that a person was bitten by a tick carrying Lyme dis-ease, but not everyone will see or develop the
rash. Symptoms such as
joint pain, headaches, neck sti ness and heart-beat irregularities may get mistaken for u or other illnesses.
In the northeast, mid-Atlantic and north-central states, deer ticks carry the disease. On the Paci c Coast, blacklegged ticks (who also like traveling on deer) spread Lyme dis-ease, the CDC says.
Year-round, especial-ly during fall and winter, you should check your own body, children and pets for ticks.
Deer ticks are often so small you won’t even feel their bite, so visual in-spection is important.
If you suspect you’ve been bitten, talk to your doctor right away.
 e CDC says that
reducing your exposure to ticks is the best de-fense against contract-ing Lyme disease. While you can’t vaccinate your family against Lyme dis-ease (the vaccine mak-er stopped production in 2002, citing lack of con-sumer demand), you can “vaccinate” your backyard against deer that carry Lyme-bearing ticks.
Keeping deer away from your backyard can help reduce your chances of encountering ticks in your home environment.
Look for a proven ef-fective, natural deterrent that has been independ-ently tested.
As part of your deer and Lyme prevention ef-forts, keep these facts in mind:• Prevention is easier than cure – in both cases. Even after treatment
with antibiotics, 10 to 20 percent of Lyme patients have symptoms that last for months or even years, the CDC reports. Once deer move into your yard, they can be di -cult to evict, and they can cause hundreds of dol-lars in damage. It’s easier to keep deer away – and avoid Lyme altogether – than to rectify the prob-lems created by deer and the ticks they carry.• A single whitetail deer can consume 8 to 12 pounds of foliage a day.• Home remedies rare-ly work for keeping deer away, and trying to treat Lyme on your own can have severe health con-sequences. Untreated Lyme disease can cause arthritis, severe joint pain and swelling, and even chronic neurological problems.

Many of my patients ask me about ways to manage their pain when it is considerable.
is is a valid question and I can’t help but empathize with them.
I have had signi cant bouts of low back pain throughout my life since the age of 12.
If you haven’t had chronic pain, consider yourself very fortunate. If you have lived with chronic pain, you know what I’m talking about.
Chronic pain, what-ever the origin, can be all-consuming.
It a ects your rela-tionships, your work, your sleep, cognitive abil-ities and overall state of being.
What’s worse is that chronic pain perpetuates itself.
In neurology, there is a phenomenon called syn-aptogenesis.
In this case, the body sends more nerve bres to an area that is painful, thereby intensifying the pain.
e body thinks its master is not listening and turns up the volume.
In addition, there is another phenomenon called neural eld recruitment in which the body morpho-logically changes the nervous system to interpret and intensify the pain if chronic enough.
One of the greatest services I can provide to pa-tients is to validate their pain and allow them an arena in which their state is acknowledged and seen as real. If the pain is signi cant and long enough, as an indi-vidual, you’ll feel like you’re losing your mind.
I would not be exaggerating if I were to say that I have had patients presented to me who are suicidal as a result of their pain.
e pain that chronic pain su erers are experien-cing is very real and cannot be ignored.
So what do you do?We are raised in a society that believes that a pill
can x anything. In some instances, the use of medication is correct
and necessary. I try to change this thought process by telling them
that, for example, you do not have headaches because you have a Tylenol de ciency.

We need to nd the very genesis of your pain and address that issue.
Pain should get the attention it deserves. A thorough examination and history should al-ways, always precede any
diagnosis or proposed treatment plan.
When is it worse? What makes it better? What makes it worse? Is it worse in the morning or evening? Does the pain wake you at night?
I am sorry to say that for chronic pain, there
is no quick x in most cases.
If a quick x is what you have been trying to obtain all along, well…maybe that’s why it’s still there and now chronic.
Moreover, it is im-portant to understand that pain serves a pur-
pose. It is tantamount to
our species for survival. Essentially, it is telling
us, “Something is wrong. Please x it.”
To merely throw as-pirin, acetaminophen or the like at pain and ex-pect it to help inde n-
itely is like putting paint on rust.
If you are going to take pain killers, I say save it for a rainy day and do not use it daily to pre-vent or correct pain.
Logically thinking, if you are in chronic pain, something is drastically
wrong. Pain killers are not
corrective or therapeutic. ey just remove the
perception of pain, not its genesis.
I haven’t even began to discuss the long term e ects of these medica-tions and how they may
hurt you.Find it. Fix it. Leave
it alone.
Markus iel is a doctor of chiropractic in Kelowna. Questions and comments may be sent to [email protected].

JUSTESEN, HENRY EDWARD1926 – 2013
Henry Justesen passed away peacefully on
October 21, 2013 and will be sorely missed by his wife of 23 years and best friend Gerda; his children Larry (Norma), Lennard, Linda (Bill), Lila (Ken), Geoffrey (Bernadette); grandchildren Barbara,
Deanna (Chad), Carolyn, Grace, Charlie and Ethan; great-grandson Jacob; two nephews and one niece.
He was predeceased by his sister, Marie Devlin, in 2012. Henry was born in Denmark, November 7, 1926 and came to Canada in 1929 with his
parents Edward and Clara. He had an accomplished career, including receiving his First Class Power
Engineering certifi cate at the age of 29, followed by a lengthy career in post-secondary Education including roles as an instructor and then Dean at the Vancouver Vocational
Institute, Superintendent of Post-Secondary Educational Programs under the B.C. Ministry of Education, where
responsibilities included planning for the formation of the Pacifi c Vocational Institute. He then took on the
responsibilities of President and Chief Executive Offi cer for a 9-year period of growth and increasing usefulness
of that Institute. Henry was an avid pilot and aircraft owner for 30 years. Despite the loss of his left hand in an industrial
accident as a teenager, with the help of a self-developed prosthesis, he held both a Private Pilot’s License and
Commercial Pilot’s License. His love of fl ying began as a boy and took him all over Canada and the United States. Henry was a strong believer in building communities and investing in the future. He was a founding Member of the Delta B.C. Hospital Board, served as Delta Constituency
President for 10 years and held a number of memberships in various technical and professional associations.
He never stopped trying to make the world a better place. A Graveside Gathering will be held at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 2850 Dry Valley Road, Kelowna, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2013, followed by refreshments at the Seventh-day Adventist Church,
11370 Bottom Wood Lake Road, Winfi eld. A Memorial Service will take place in Burnaby on Saturday, January 4th,
2014. Our sincere gratitude goes out to Pamela of the Heart Function Clinic and to the Central Okanagan
Community Care team for all their support. In lieu of fl owers, please consider a donation to the BC.SPCA or
other worthy charity of your choice.
Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.mem.com. and searchinghis name under stories.
Food For FrightThe Scarecrow Ladies wish to thank all of the people who gave so generously to the Lake Country Food Bank Drive in Meadow Brook Mobile Home Park on Halloween Night. Thanks also to the person outside of the park who made
the donation and Coopers Store in Lake Country. The Scarecrow Ladies are also The Angels: during the year they collect bottles, return them and turn any money from
deposits over to the Food Bank. Angels thank all who save bottles for them!

Did you know…? Our community owns nearly 200 kilometres of roads at an estimated replacement value of $100,000,000 – that’s nearly $25,000 per house! In order to ensure our road network services the needs of our community, the District of Lake Country is completing a 20-year comprehensive road network plan called Transportation for Tomorrow.
The plan’s vision is… Getting Around Lake Country in Safe and Enjoyable Ways.
Learn more by going to lakecountry.bc.ca and clicking on the Transportation for Tomorrow Quick Link, or visit the display in the lobby of Municipal Hall.
Complete the online or paper survey so we know what you think of the plan.
The Transportation for Tomorrow plan addresses roadway maintenance, road renewal and transportation improvements over the next 20 years, clearly defining the level of service that will be achieved and what it will cost to take care of and improve our transportation network.
