The Name “Shen Yun”The word “Shen” (神) is a term for “divine” or “divine being,” while “Yun” (韻) refers to the overall manner of a dancer and the meaning behind his or her move-ments. The two words together tell of the grace, compassion, and sublime beauty of heavenly realms that can be glimpsed in even the subtlest expressions and ges-tures of our dancers. This is the essence of “Shen Yun.”

Lakeway Regional Medical CenterA New Home for Healthcare in the Hill Country

Lakeway Regional Medical Center (LRMC) is excited and honored to become a part of the Hill Country community. The mission of Lakeway Regional Medical Center is the delivery of compassionate and exceptional quality healthcare that improves the quality of life four our patients, our physicians, our healthcare team and the communities we serve.

The hospital will open as a full service 106 bed hospital opening late spring of 2012 with a 20 bed emergency room and fully staffed and state of the art support services. LRMC has a governance structure that is driven by physicians and brings a sharp focus on high quality patient care and exceptional patient experience.

LRMC has launched its official website (www.lakewayregional.com) and Facebook page to serve as sources for obtaining information regarding the hospital. The website also has a page for people who wish to submit a resume to be considered for employment opportunities.

The hospital will serve the needs in the Lake Travis area by featuring:

Emergency and Urgent Care: 20 bed emergency department, 3 trauma bays and 8 urgent care rooms open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week staffed by board certified, experienced physicians.

Radiology Services: Inpatient & Outpatient Imaging (MRI, CT, Fluoroscopy, Nuclear Medicine, Mammography, Ultrasound, & Interventional Radiology)

Surgical Services: Six operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, two pain management rooms & two C-section operating rooms

Women’s Services: Seven labor, delivery, and recovery rooms; 19 dedicated single patient rooms for post ante partum stays and other gynecological services

Neonatal critical care services: 11 bed neonatal intensive care unit to serve premature infants.

Cardiology services: Three cardiac catheterization suites to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiology services, including interventional, diagnostic cardiology, open heart surgery, cardio Pulmonary services, and cardio thoracic surgical services

Intensive care services: 18 bed intensive care unit to serve patients when they have the most critical needs

Pediatric services: 15 general acute and 4 critical care pediatric beds for children

General acute care services: In addition to the services previously described, the Hospital will provide general medical acute care services for the community. These services will be provided for both inpatients and outpatients. All inpatients will be provided services in state-of the-art single patient rooms.

Happy Holidays from the City of Lakeway! On Friday, December 2nd, the Parks and Recreation Department will host “Lights On!” at the Lakeway Activity Center parking lot located at 105 Cross Creek Road in Lakeway. The event runs from 6:30 - 9:30 PM. Santa, Mrs. Claus and Rudolph will be nearby to “plug in” the Trail of Lights display located behind City Hall and to speak to all of Lakeway’s good little boys and girls. Come eat some gingerbread and drink some hot chocolate! We will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items to benefit Lake Travis Crisis Ministries. Around LakewayThe Lakeway Associates of Seton Kick Off Season with Announcement of "Seton Tea" and Seton "Galla" Dates

During the first Seton Associates meeting at D’Vine Wine (shown above from the left are Annette Brown, Lynn Howe, Kitty Litchy and Maureen Mulrooney) President Kim Nearburg announced that the next Seton event will take place November 9th, 10:00am at the Lakeway Activity Center where a bus will whisk you off to Austin to take you to SETON SHOAL CREEK PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL for a TOUR, LUNCH at “SANTA RITA” and SHOPPING at “SWEET CHARITY.” If you would like to attend this interesting and fun day, call Kim Nearburg 261-1680.

Kim then delighted the crowd with the news that the famous SETON TEA will take place Saturday, January 28th, 12:30pm at THE HILLS COUNTRY CLUB. Mark your calendars now in order to make your reservation for this delightful event. Local organizations, businesses and individuals design and decorate the tables. The tables showcase the most exquisite table settings designed around a theme of their choosing. The next exciting Seton Associates event will be the fantastic annual “SETON GALA” which will be a thrilling event located in the gorgeous home of BEAU THERIOT, the owner of the famous “OASIS” restaurant. Around LakewayLakeway to Get a Wild Dust Storm!

Let us harken back to the Wild, Wild West days when town brothels were built to last, and mysterious cowboys rode into town for shelter from the elements. The Lakeway Players return us to those days with their fall production of, Wild Dust: The Musical, which runs the first weekend in November, Thursday the 3rd, Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th.

We are all products of our families and traditions. Some may have a strong Western heritage while others got here as soon as they could! How has their past influenced our cast? The ‘ladies of the night’ are Cathy Rose as Denise, initially shy, but a central character in the intriguing plot line, Becky Ames as Sally, a shrewd businesswoman, Theresa Lingren as Belle, not savvy about much of anything, and the fearless leader of the group, Julianne Debower as Marion.

Cathy Rose, (Denise) coming to us from North Carolina, is a true Southern Bell. They were farmers (believed to have come to this country as indentured servants!). Her grandmother survived Polio, learned how to walk again, and taught herself how to read. Wild and woolly comes to mind! Playing the part of Denise allows Cathy to use her strong survivalist heritage in character development!

Becky Ames’ (Sally) ancestors hail from Denmark with a branch settling in the wild west of Canada in Saskatchewan. (Hang ‘em high, eh?) There are no dust storms there, but she believes that her family probably hung out with Bigfoot during bad snow storms.

Theresa Lingren’s (Belle) father immigrated to the United States from The Netherlands and ended up in Cincinnati, Ohio. Theresa dreamed of life on the prairie, riding horses, but reality had her ending up in the ‘burbs’ taking riding lessons and cleaning out the stable. She is still waiting for someone to buy her a horse.

A Beaumont, Texas, gal, Julianne Debower (Marion) grew up with big hair, an East Texas twang and a keen appreciation of family. Her Mama’s daddy was a blacksmith who worked in the oilfields of Texas and Louisiana. She believes her upbringing will give depth to her role as Marion. She refuses to comment on how she learned to play the leader of the ladies of the night.

Portraying the “ladies of the day” are Linda Bradshaw as Hard Cora, the town Blacksmith,

Karen Decker as Louise Styles, a rigid mother, and Lee Dilday as Louise’s daughter, Gertrude, forced to a finishing school, while discovering if she even wants to go.

Linda Bradshaw’s (Hard Cora) family hails from the Texas Panhandle. She is unaware of her genealogy past her grandparents since her Uncle ‘Jeep’ refuses to have one done stating, “There’s probably too many cattle rustlers & horse thieves in our past.” If that’s the case, she’s is happy she broke the mold, and has never been convicted of a crime!

Karen Decker (Louise Styles) was born in Boulder, Colorado, and has her family roots in the American Southwest. Her great grand-daddy was a rancher and legend has it that his brother hung around with Billy the Kid, much to the family’s chagrin. Karen was able to channel the family’s attitude about this friendship for her character development of the indignant and judgmental Mrs. Louise Styles.

Lee Dilday (Louise) is a real Southern Girl from the Piney Woods of East Texas. She grew up in Lufkin and her family has been in Texas for generations. She’s a descendant of Robert E. Lee on her mother’s side. Lee was a family name and her grandmother’s middle name, so Lee Dilday carries on her family’s tradition.

The mysterious cowboy and male lead who rides in on the storm, Cooper, is portrayed by Mark King. Most recently from Houston, his western roots lie in the little town of Dime Box. There, cowboys and Indians lived and cattle roamed (when not chasing innocent young boys up a tree). He’ll draw on those memories as he develops the character of the mysterious stranger.

A murder mystery needs a dead body, and a Western needs a villain. Bill Walker (Martin) provides us with a two for one special! Bill is from Ohio, not Texas, and he has never ridden a cow but he did ride a horse once. He has also ridden a camel but that doesn’t count as a true Wild West experience. He has no prior experience being dead.

Direct ing this outstanding group is Barbara Calderaro.

Her family heritage is a blend of Italian (Naples) and Sicilian (Catania), and our third time director is the first in her family to venture west. She has recently been asked to join a 16-piece big band, the Lone Star Swing Syndicate, as their female vocalist. Singing with a big ol’ Texas Swing band gives her an automatic Texas citizenship, right?

The Player’s musical accompanist is Nancy Nichols. Raised in Daytona, Florida, as a young girl, she rode bareback along the ocean. When she married and moved to Houston, her family loved rodeos, where they performed on horseback! Nancy currently performs only on the piano.

Of course, the play would not go on without the critical roles of the production team. Members are Annette Brown, Producer, Donna Ferrie, Stage Manager, Anita Mapes, Assistant Director, Martha Kubala, Production Assistant, Maureen Mulroony, Choreographer, Delores Dolezal and Barbara Carpenter, Makeup and Costumes, Nancy Keetch, Graphics, programs and banners, Linda Bradshaw and Sue Wright, Publicity and Marketing.

Our next Lakeway Community Blood Drive will be held on Saturday, November 19th, at the Lakeway Activity Center, from 8:00 to 12:00. We have plenty of open appointments, so please consider donating if you have not already signed up.

Lakeway Sing Along Group Prepare forGreen Santa Christmas Show

SUNDAY DECEMBER 4TH

The Lakeway Sing Alongs are busy preparing for the Christmas show they do each year in support of the Lake Travis Green Santa project.

The show is scheduled for Sunday, December 4th with two back to back shows - 2:00 and 4:30. These shows have become very popular and very well attended so it is suggested that you come early to get a good seat.

The only admission charge is an unwrapped gift for a child up to age 17 that will be placed in the Green Santa bag. These gifts will be distributed to area children by the Green Santa committee at Christmas time in order to make Christmas a little brighter for some of these children.

If you are unable to attend the shows and would like to contribute to the Green Santa project, there will be boxes in the lobby of the Activity Center after Thanksgiving where you can drop off your gifts.

Hudson Bend Middle School Named to TBEC Honor RollHudson Bend Middle School (HBMS) has been named to the

Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll for 2011, one the most prestigious awards for sustained, academic excellence in the state. HBMS enters the honor roll for the first time and is one of only 38 middle schools selected.

According to TBEC, the honor roll recognizes less than four percent of more than 8,000 public schools in Texas. “Being named a TBEC Honor Roll school is the most prestigious award for sustained, academic excellence a Texas public school can achieve,” said TBEC Executive Director Ken Zornes. “It recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard—Commended—in every subject. And, in this the last year of TAKS, our standards are the most demanding we have ever had.”

All schools selected for the TBEC Honor Roll were expected to improve their Commended performance from 2010 and every school was required to have a minimum of 20 percent of students tested performing at the Commended level on all tests for 2011.

“We are very proud of the Hudson Bend Middle School community and applaud the effort and commitment of students, staff, and parents, which have resulted in students performing at the highest of standards,” stated LTISD Interim Superintendent Susan Bohn. “The high level of student achievement at this school is indicative of the achievement of students on all eight of our campuses. When one of this community’s schools earns recognition like the TBEC Honor Roll, it is a reflection of the wonderful support and high expectations that parents, teachers, staff, and community have bestowed upon our students.”

All Honor Roll schools will be recognized during the 12th Annual TBEC Honor Roll School seminar, reception, and dinner on December 2, 2011 at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. The event is sponsored by HEB.

TBEC was formed in 1989 by Texas business leaders to engage with educators in a long-term effort to improve public education in Texas.

WCID 17 is a member of the Lake Travis Coalition, a coalition of government agencies, chambers of commerce and businesses who commissioned a study to calculate a baseline economic and fiscal value to the area surrounding Lake Travis. The study by consulting firm Richard Charles Lesser & Co. used historical data and econometric models to assess the financial impact low lake levels or poor water quality have on the region. The coalition released the report generated by the study on September 29, 2011 at a press conference with legislators, county commissioners, local officials, state agencies, chambers of commerce board members and business representatives in attendance.

The report clearly shows that Lake Travis is a significant economic engine contributing over $207 million in revenue for state and local governments; taxes that buy ambulances, maintain schools and provide state government with needed funding. Low lake levels showed a severe negative impact. Thousands less visitors contributing to sales, hotel and mixed beverage taxes, means decreases of over $21 million in total fiscal revenues annually and hundreds of lost jobs.

Lake Travis Coalition believes that with verifiable data on fiscal and economic impacts, this report will be a valuable tool to be used by legislators and state agencies when determining the best use of

the water stored in the Highland Lakes for the future generations. You can get involved by studying this report, speaking to your

Conserve Water in the Winter

and Save Money Year-Round on Wastewater Fee!!

WCID 17 will be averaging household water usage during the billing cycle beginning November 8 and ending February 15, 2012 (when outdoor irrigation is usually shut off) to calculate the customer fee for wastewater service to be billed beginning in October, 2012 for the following year. Minimizing your water usage during these months will result in keeping your wastewater bill low.

Travis County Sets Up Reverse 911 for Cell Phones Travis County Emergency Services is making reverse 911 services

available to residents’ cell phones. The county already offers this service to residents’ landlines. Reverse 911 is used in emergencies where there is a threat to public safety. The message gives warnings and instructions.

People can register their cell phones for up to five geographical locations and if there is an emergency in one of those areas, they will get a call. To find out more info about the program, you can go to http://www.capcog.org/divisions/homeland-security/ens/

Raises Over $24,000 for Worthy Charities The Hills of Lakeway Country Club recently hosted its Fifth

Annual ClubCorp Charity Classic, with hundreds of families from Lakeway coming together to raise over $24,000 for three worthy charitable organizations, including Maggie’s Hope, MDA Augie’s Quest and Employee Partners Care Foundation (EPCF).

Sponsored by the award-winning Rough Hollow master-planned lifestyle community, the ClubCorp Charity Classic drew members of The Hills of Lakeway Country Club and the Village of The Hills, as well as Lakeway residents to a golf tournament, dinner and live auction. Thanks to this valuable sponsor commitment, as well as the effort of The Hills of Lakeway Country Club to cover the cost of the golf tournament and dinner, 100 percent of the proceeds from the event are able to be divided among the three charities.

Rough Hollow, developed by Lakeway-based Legend Communities and its principal, Haythem Dawlett, has been involved with the ClubCorp Charity Classic for three consecutive years, providing not only sponsorship support but also helping to increases awareness of the event through its numerous marketing and development relationships. The result is an event with substantial individual and corporate support benefiting organizations that are making a tremendous impact on the lives of those in need in Lakeway and beyond.

While others continue the search for a cure for Autism, Maggie’s Hope is giving families hope and the funding they need to recover their children. The number of children affected by this disorder has jumped 400% and is now at 1 in 91. One day it could be your loved one. Our goal is to promote awareness and most importantly support those families affected by this frustrating, but sometimes-recoverable condition. Families don’t have time to wait for a cure, they are suffering NOW and need our help for treatment, school advocates, support and special dietary needs.

Maggie’s Hope is about helping families without the politics that may surround autism for which treatment parents choose. Every penny Maggie’s Hope gives out goes to families. Families hurting TODAY financially, emotionally and struggling to help their children and pay their bills will get help from Maggie’s Hope.
